• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How were you received

hmm that sounds very protestant, priesthood of all believers, something like that. Onyl Priests ordained from the time of Christ can give the sacraments, among them baptism. Otherwise it is simply gestures and words. Making the argument that anyone can give a baptism cheapens the sacrament to the point that there is no reason to be baptized (hey, i can spray myself with tap water and baptize myself right) which means one thinks that baptism is not necessary for salvation and hence Protestants arte right, you are saved by faith alone.

In an emergency situation, laypeople can baptize, too. If the person survives, the service is completed by a priest, but that person doesn't have to be immersed again. Who are you to put a limit on God's grace?

As long as you baptism was done before the election of Gene Robinson, and it was done in the Name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit it is acceptable for completion

Here's the best part, I was baptized on All Saints Sunday, the same day that "consecration" occurred. I was only vaguely aware of what was going on in the Episcopal Church. I still feel like it was done with the right intentions and in the correct manner. I believe there's only one baptism, so I'm thinking chrismation only is probably the right thing for me.

This is consistent, also, with what I've been told the teaching of the Orthodox Church is regarding Christians outside the OC; that we know where the Church is, but we don't know where it isn't. I am not worried about how much grace there was at the time of my baptism, but I am very grateful that the Orthodox Church will be validating it so that it will be made fully effective. To what degree have I had the Holy Spirit thus far? He led me to the Church, so I'm not worried about that. Whatever has already been, I will receive Him more fully at chrismation. It will be the greatest day of my life, this new beginning. I am not worthy, and this is all by grace, and most amazing.

(Btw, I forgot to mention that when I'm received, it will also involve the sacrament of Holy Confession, a full life confession. Please pray for me; this will not be easy.)

Are the prayers of exorcism read in a Chrismation service?

No, unfortunately. This is lacking in the ceremony of Chrismation.

I've known several people who had special prayers of exorcism prayed over them long after their Chrismation because of problems.

BTW your daughter's picture at her Holy Baptism is priceless. She looks radiant and wet.

I will be received by chrismation, perhaps sometime in July. I was baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, by immersion, as a child (age 10). Father said that if he rebaptized someone already baptized according to the Trinitarian formula he would probably be defrocked! I respect and trust the ability and faithfulness of the Church to do the right thing.

Congratulations Dianne.

Are you absolutely certain?

Scripture tells us that St Philip of the Seven Deacons baptized.

From your hostility toward the OCA (THe original Russian Church in the US) I would suspect that you were perhaps ROCOR or ROCA. But your belief that the Roman Catholic Church is the same as the Orthodox Church.
Let's try to be fair here too. My OCA parish has good realtions with some ROCOR parishes and monasteries. Please folks, let's stop the generalizations.

Out of curiosity, how many of you were sprinkled in the name of the Trinity as Protestants and then received into Orthodoxy by Chrismation (and confession) only? I was under the impression that this was the norm for all Trinitarian baptisms, sprinkled, immersed, whatever, but that may just be my "liberal" OCA (formerly ROCA, by the way) church ;)

Well, it was somewhere between sprinkling and pouring.

That is my impression too, but my experience is the in the uberliberal Church of Antioch.

I didn't mean for it to be a blanket statement. But The only jurisdiction in the US where you find such anti-OCA stuff is with ROCOR (the Greeks, Antiochians, and Serbs all do Chrismation in cases of former Trinitarian Baptisms). My priest also has very good relations with many ROCOR parishes. And I was talking to my Bishop on monday and he told me that he acctually Ordained the Father of a priest in a local ROCOR church. My point was just that he was most likely ROCOR, and how wierd it would be that he has the beliefs he has about the Roman Church in the most traditional jurisdiction you can find.

My friend Joseph, the owner of comeandseeicons.com, has this Georgian (from the country of Georgia) hat which does not have a brim, has straight sides and a flat top and is very colorful. I think I should get one and wear it whenever I discuss Iconography.
