The first thing to notice here is how much our mortality rate has dropped over the course of a century, largely due to big reductions in infectious diseases like tuberculosis and influenza.

I suppose an interesting question would be....is the increased prevalence of cancer due to the reduction of the bottom three in the 1900 data (people living longer and not dying of these three are therefore more likely to get cancer), or is it because cancer is better understood (and therefore some of those deaths were misattributed)....or does it have something to do with the rates and types of carcinogens?

Fascinating graph though...nice to know we're a less accident-prone species than we were, guess the health and safety people will be happy...

He is the one that gives us wisdom and knowledge. If you want to trust in man then put your trust in man, I am going to put my faith, hope, love and trust in God. Do you think these scientists and doctors responsible for the improvements in agriculture, nutrition, and medicine got their information by reading the bible and praying or by observation, scientific research, and discovery?

I know that should I come down with a potentially fatal ailment, I'll definitely trust those with the knowledge to treat me. How about you forgo the man-made science and just pray if it happens to you. Then we can demonstrate who will be better off. Sound like a deal?

I hate to be a Negative Nancy here, but I dare say that every iota of "wisdom" and knowledge we as a species have comes from observation and experimentation. No knowledge ever came from any gods.

It is not really that interesting. If you can read graphs and read well.......words and stuff. It could be interesting if you can't do those things like the blog that the OP linked to and the guy that wrote that blog post.

The graph is about the top ten ways people die and the number of deaths that are due to these causes. If you read the bar chart, in each section has ten segments. Each segment representing the amount of deaths due to that cause.

The reason the bar on the right is lower is because apparently humanity has figured out much more diverse ways of dying. Crocodile attacks, trying to have sex with a socket plug, licking a sleeping polar bear. These methods of death reduce the nominal numbers of the top ten ways of dying.

I thought the first thing to notice here was that the graph says that if I clap my hands and make believe that unicorns will let me ride them to a land of make believe and strawberries. And I will eat those strawberries and they will taste good.

1900 only adds up to about 1100.
2010 only adds up to about 600

The suicide rate hasn't been tracked very much (about 20 years in total), which is to be expected since it's a rather rare and private matter.

I would say that the main reason the right bar is lower is that humanity has learned to deal with the most easy-to-deal-with (which some may have been among the most common) causes of death.

It is not rare, it is tragic and common and I don't understand it.

I mean I do understand the feelings that lead someone there but I don't understand why this thing is common.

I agree with you except for it not being rare, but you might be in a population more prone to suicide.
In comparison, the only suicides I hear (since I've never experienced anything similar, thankfully) about are once every 4-5 years, and then only due to local gossip.

I hope I don't seem cold hearted, I rarely touch the subject of death other than in purely theoretical or playful matters (/manners?).
