In my opinion, California has been swiftly going downhill for more than several years.

Landslides aren't that common. I think fires are a bigger problem.

If Californication is a problem, you could hide under the bridge or just give it away.

We do have problems but we are far from " going down hill". I know California bashing is popular but as a native I am here to say that this type of hype is inaccurate because only small pockets of our state have issues.

Every state has its problems, but the vast majority of people I see railing about places like CA, NYC, Chicago, etc, are folkd who rarely even visit them, much less live there, and are oblivious to how they really compare to their own locales. I live in Baltimore, which is far worse on a number of metrics than most cities, but there are loads of good things about this city, too, and I'd rather live here than anywhere I've been/lived in the rust belt.
I visited the south just a bit. There's some nice places there. But lets face it, many of them are liberal enclaves - like the "research triangle" area of NC.

Wow. A decrease of more than 3%!

Oh, wait.

California’s violent crime rate increased by 5.7%, from 468 crimes per 100,000 residents in 2021 to 495 in 2022.
So an increase of 5.7% in 2022 and a decrease of 3% in 2023 still means crime has increased 2.7% in 2023 since 2021.

Well, one of those is the whole state, while the other is Los Angeles.

The poster I was responding to was talking about "Very unsafe cities"

You'll find me safe in Los Angeles, not out east of the 5 in the 909 with the dangerous tweakers and Republicans.

Yes, I apologize. That was my mistake.

Yep. "Only" 327 people were victims of homicide in Los Angeles in 2023 as compared to. 382 in 2022.

Los Angeles is safer than a whopping 7% of US neighborhoods.

It's gotten worse since the 80's when violent crime rates were far higher and when smog blanketed LA? I doubt that.
I was a competitive swimmer in the 70s. My AAU club rented a long course pool in Burbank during the summer so we could train for Olymoic events (e.g. a 50 meter long pool). This pool was just over 1/4 mile from the mountains and on a really bad day you could barely see them. Once or twice practice got cancelled because it just did not work.

But blue state policies have changed that. Now days smog never blots out the mountains.

Yet some here are upset about that.

Hey it’s not all tweakers and Republicans in the IE.

I’m here too!

California pushed through two soft-on-crime propositions that Americans need to know about.
"My child was killed by a gang member, and you had more sympathy for that gang member than my child who was killed in front of my home."
This is the testimony of Emma Rivas, a grieving mother whose son was murdered in Los Angeles, as she confronted Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon for his refusal to uphold his most basic duty: Prosecute the criminals and protect the innocent.
Last year, during a four-hour town hall in Los Angeles County, a small business owner told me about his store that was broken into four times within the span of just a few months. He called the police each time, but nothing was being done. I spoke with a few Los Angeles Sheriff's deputies at the same town hall who explained that – in addition to being wildly understaffed and working countless overtime hours – their hands are largely tied by soft-on-crime state and local laws. Simply put, they’re being prevented from holding criminals accountable.

And 2,589 in 1992.

(ETA: 1,094 in the city, compared to the number above for the county.)

Well, it's a big city. But even in number, the murders are worse in many smaller cities. And in terms of rate, it's not bad at all, ranking 63rd out of the 100 most populous cities in the US. Where #1 is the worst homicide rate: St. Louis, MO.

And the three least murderous big cities in the US are all in California.

When was the last time you were in California?

Never. As I said, just no appeal... Never has been.

All that's ever in the news about California is men that can't keep it in their pants, men who are confused what a man is, free drugs, free sex, free crime, sex trafficking, human trafficking and a two class society there where the poor are stepped over by the wealthy since I was a child...

I just don't read all the above and say to myself "cool, count me in!" Nope. Not for me.

I've visited most of the Nations parks throughout my life, but I intentionally won't visit those in California.

Weren't you one of the folks getting bent out of shape about how rural areas are portrayed in the media?

And 2,589 in 1992.

Now you're the one mixing up locations. From your article:

Rocked by gang violence, civil unrest and a proliferation of lethal weapons, 1992 was the deadliest year in Los Angeles County history, officials said Monday.

Probably not all that accurate to compare Los Angeles County statistics with Los Angeles City statistics, wouldn't you say?

Well, it's a big city.

And an even bigger county. :sorry:

But even in number, the murders are worse in many smaller cities. And in terms of rate, it's not bad at all, ranking 63rd out of the 100 most populous cities in the US. Where #1 is the worst homicide rate: St. Louis, MO.

You do know that murder isn't the only thing that makes people feel unsafe, right? I mean, according to the article I posted above, thefts and burglaries are up a combined 56% year over year. That doesn't exactly instill "safe" feelings.

Maybe you could come up with a new catchy slogan.

"Come visit LA where you're 23% less likely to get killed than last year but 56% more likely to have something stolen from you!"

It is unfortunate your perception has been clouded by negative media, most likely portraying a biased view of LA and San Francisco, and then coloring the entire state with that view. CA has some of the most beautiful natural sites in the US.

Then you really don't know what it's like there.

You're saying the news can be trusted to be accurate?

It used to be... I trusted the news until just a few years ago (2015 to be exact).

Since I was born in 1968 that leaves a great many years actually trusting the news. MSNBC, the New York Times, even the Washington Post used to be respected by everyone, left and right.
