I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on how to pursue a career as a pastor...I was also wondering if, like other college programs, you can double major. If anyone knows a good school in Missouri, I would also appreciate recommendations.
Also out of curiosity...i am a single mom...how would the community feel about that? How do you feel about that...a single mom as a pastor that is.

I am not completly sure about this but I think I read in the bible where woman are not supposed to be pastors hmm I think its in acts or romans where it talks about how a pastor and elders etc.. should act etc... Please dont hold this against me until someone else can back it up. When I say this dont think that there is nothing you can do though. You can be an urban missionary right where you live you could be an evangelist and speak at local churches schools colleges etc.. Now if you are wanting to be a pastor this probally would not do much for you but missionary organizations are always needing people to help direct the missions etc.. and there is probally one somewhere around you. also at my church we had a youth leader that was a female and she was just awesome, she was always teaching us about Jesus but she always knew how to have a good time too. I loved her taking us to CiY conferences and VCTC.

I am not really sure, but my interpretation was that it was illegal for women to be pastors or priests and what not, and one of god's laws is "obey the laws of the land" which is why Paul told the women not to talk in church...cause it was against the law. It isn't against the law now, so it isn't against God was my interpretation...

see it seems like you know a bit about the topic already thats why I said I wasnt sure because I remember reading something about it but couldnt find it. My dad is trying to become a pastor at an assemblies of God church because the church he goes to is about to make satelite churches so he may get one of those. I would probally still just talk with your pastor.

Hmm... depends on which "denomination" you would affiliate yourself with? For example, if you wanted to be a pastor, or priest in an Anglican or Catholic church, there would be training and ordination involved etc. Many other churches require some formal training/study at a bible college. Or, if you started your own church, you could call yourself Senior Pastor straight away (A seemingly daunting prospect).

They have the Berean School of the Bible courses available. These courses can be ordered and you can take them from home. There are 3 different levels of courses that you can take. Certified, Licensed, and Ordained. There are other requirements as well in order to get fully Ordained by the Assemblies of God, but this may be good place to start for a single-parent start.

My Sister-in-Law is currently taking the courses. They also attend an AoG church in Missouri. I cannot recall the name off hand. I will try and track it down.

Biblically one cannot find where pastoring is a "career" to choose. It is a gifting from the Lord and one needs to be called.

However, we can read about hirelings, those who do things just for the money. We see that when the pressure is on they turn tail and run!

Many years ago I heard a good anology of the five fold minstry and it has stuck with me ever since. Take a look at your left hand, especially your fingers.

An Apostle is like your thumb. It is not directly next to the rest of your fingers but a aprt just the same. It sticks out there on it's own but the rest of the fingers greatly rely on it just as it does the rest of the fingers.

Next we have the Prophet which is like your pointing finger. Always pointing things out, putting their finger on things. Again the rest depend upon it as it does the rest.

Now we have the evangelist, the middle finger, who stands just a little above the rest. Dependency here also!

For sake of your question we will jump a finger!

Here we have the teacher, like the pinkie finger, which is always getting into your ears. And yet again dependency is required here also.

Lastly we have the Pastor. Notice how it is like the ring finger? This finger indicates marriage and in following the example of Christ the pastor is married to the church. The pastor not only fathers but also mothers the congregation. The pastor is elated when one of his(her) children (congregation) excels. The pastor mourns when tragedy befalls one. The pastor is always encouraging, uplifting, and even provoking us to go on with God. The pastor is always at the other end of the phone, no matter the hour. Well, I think you get where this is going.

The other four ministries typically are going out into the world to function within their calling. It is the Pastor who is with the people continually.

Now lastly, notice that your fingers are connected to your hand? But does your hand control your fingers? Does your forearm or elbow? Or even your upper arm or shoulder? No, your fingers are controled by your head. This is where the impluses to function originate.

The same is with the five fold ministry. With everyone actually. Christ is the head of the Church. He calls each of us to fulfill our part. Not everyone is a finger, nor eye or toe. It is only through prayer and patience, waiting on the Lord to lead and equip us. It is only when we are in His will for our lives that we can bring the most glory to His name..

Dearest Secret Dawn:

I left the AG because of their stand point on Divorcees being
ordained ministers. So I don't know how welcoming they will be to you.

My guess is not very.

Keep your head up and listen to what God is saying

A minister is one who ministers.

From what I can understand it goes like this in the AoG

If you are Divorced and RE-Marry AFTER you are saved
you are forever ineleigable for ministry.

That means
Pastor
Asst Pastor
Youth Pastor
Elder
Deacon
Board Member

If you were re-married before you got saved you are ok but must submit
to a pannel of 3 to determine if you were in fact unsaved when you re-married.

This based on the requirement of an elder being the husband of but one wife.

It is just one of the points of Theology I disagreed with the AoG on. Fine points but points none the less.

PG

BTW I would have been and still am eligable to pastor an AoG church

You have to have some kind of sick need for abuse. If you do, then the ministry is right up your alley.
Missouri...I can't think of anything that would help you. There is an AoG seminary there. And a Batpist bible college. CHeck out schools and see what they offer. You can major in whatever you want. I majored in English and Religion.

Since you're female...you're going to have to be strong.

What kind of things do you enjoy?

what do you mean i have a sick need for abuse....

and i like/hate teens...meaning i get them...and it drives me nuts the things they do sometimes...i want to share my experiences and use them to teach them...i think i have a talent for communicating with them and i can be honest with them unlike many adults i have seen who run youth groups...

Irrespective of where you go to school , typically you need your pastor's recommendation ( that he recognizes the call on your life ) .

Some denominations take the " qualifications for ministers " found within the epistles literally ... single , married , males +/- in leadership positions . But like Joyce Meyers , Cathy Duplantis , Bam Carter , Marylin Hickey , etc. there is always a place for women who desire to minister , youth , teen , jail , etc. ministries .

there is a correspondance bible school I am working through for independant Charismatic type ministries ( Word of Faith ) at www.gmrinc.org Global Ministries And Relief ; Dr. Leon van Rooyen ; Tampa , Florida . They have an Assoc. , Ba. , Ma. , Phd. programs . You call , request application , fill out , attach pastor's recommendation , send in a portion of tuition ( so much monthly , till paid ) , receive a course book and prospectus , purchase books , work on each lesson , when complete all lessons send the course book in for evaluation / certificate .

I know i am supposed to do something in service...i always have even before i was christian...but now that i am a christian i really want to get in deep...i feel like i can give so much for god to the kids nowadays...i don't know if it is a call, but it won't leave my mind and all my other dreams career wise aren't what they used to be...i just don't feel the passion for them that i used to...i wanted to get a lot of information and then discuss it with my pastor...i know i am new as a christian and need a lot of study...but something tells me this could be right...

Good NEWS!

You don't need to be ordained or licensed as a pastor to minister!

Feel free to:

  • Visit the sick or read to the elderly in a nursing home!
  • Bring a Bible study to wommen in the county jail
  • Work in the nursery or teach Sunday school
  • Work at the soup kitchen or food bank
  • Launder the clothing for the second hand blessing room
  • Offer to take care of some little ones for a single mom so she can get to church or just be alone for a little while.
  • Dare I mention offering some bunk space to a stranger?
  • How about appointing yourself to be sure that your pasor always has some water on the pupit?
Study to show yourself aproved, read your Bible study your Bible till it is falling apart!

Whatsoever you do for these the least of my brothers that you do unto me. DO not desire so much the pulpit or posistion. Rather serve, learn to know Jesus really know him.

And when you are at the very bottom of the ladder you may be humble enough to pastor.

I am so sick of what pastoring has become. We are shepherds that go into the brambles to guard our sheeps. We are there to at best stave off the wolves with a staff. It means being cut and bruised and bloody - tired beyond belief. Long hours - Low Pay no recognition, everyone second guessing you - many people gossiping about you and your family. It means being judged but never judging.

Yeah my job I love it!

Back to vacuming the sanctuary before service tongiht!

Love

ok, so wait...what if it wasn't your choice...and there are reasons that the bible says divorce is acceptable (sexual immorality) and i am sure God would be ok if someone in a very abusive relationship who tried everything, left for the safety of their life...or what if the other person wanted the divorse, there really isn't much you can do about that...are there conditions to this? or is it just divorce=inelligible.

unfortunatley having a child means that i don't have the freedom for that...i don't want recognition, i want to serve...and i know it pays enough to eat and clothe my child...so this way i could be a full time server(?)...i would have no other job to concentrate on then working for God (i consider being a mother part of that)...do i WANT the negitives...no...but i am willing to accept them and deal with them if i can bring good to peoples lives....like i said it isn't a decision completely yet, but i am seriously considering it...either way i will work with teens...

you can get ordained with a christian group like World Christianship Ministries,
and take some of thier courses in your spare time for training.
