  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How ruff is your ruff draft?

My rough draft is usually decently edited, but not perfect by any means. I like trying to get it to sound more-or-less right, even on the first draft, but there's also a time to get on with the story. I don't really have a problem with inner criticism, at least I wouldn't call it a problem. It's more like I love the editing so much that I want to just skip to that part - I want the story to sound its best.
The really unintelligible parts are handwritten during class ^_^ But my main rough draft is usually clean enough that other people can read it, but it still needs a lot of work (as a rough draft should).

the first draft... like the very, very first is usually rough enough to sand wood. :) it depends on the amount of time i had to write it. i usually edit about 3 or 4 times before people see it. if something i write really bothers me, i'll go back and edit until i think it's better.

My rough draft shall never see the light of day. The edited version hopefully will, but the initial one? *Shudders*

I began it two years ago. I didn't really have a lot of character development until I started figuring that stuff out in the third or fourth chapter. It's HANDWRITTEN - you don't even want to GO there with me. My handwriting is so atrocious that if it looks bad enough, I recopy the word in the margin with an arrow so I know what it says later. Also, there are a copy of tiny, non-epic plot and character glitches that I changed my mind about after I wrote them. It's nothing that drastically alters the plot - just changes the portrayal of it here and there.

So, yeah. That's what I'm in the process of doing. The rough draft gets better the farther you get into, but it ain't done yet.

When I first started my current WIP I did a lot of self-editing as I went alone, till I realised it was holding me back from actually progressing with the draft. Now I suppress my inner editor; my goal is to get the 1st draft done, and soon. I know a lot of this draft will be scrapped but it does contain some 'flashes' of goodness I'm really proud of.

Yeah, ditto. Mine's far from perfect, but it has the general essence of what I want, along with a few irreplacable moments that turned out rather well, I think.

I'm sticking by the principle that, as a very successful author recently said, "You can fix anything but a blank page"! :)

It depends. I tend to edit my stuff as if I am doing a term paper, usually while I'm doing it. Which I know, breaks every rule in the book.

Even after editing it, running it through the grammar/spell checker, and receiving a "high reading" level, I still consider it rough. I still find holes or areas that need improvement on it. Even when, the people that I do let read my material, say it is fine the way it is.

lol. My rough drafts are so rough that ideas might be mentioned three or four times and two consecuative paragraphs might make absolutely no sense together.

Sounds like a few term papers I have had to write where I didn't have a clue what the topic was. ^_^

My fiction rough drafts are incredibly rough, while my nonfic rough drafts often only need a little bit of copyediting.
Oooo, I envy you. But maybe as I get older I'll learn to write a passable essay first few times through.
