Don't worry about it too much, IMHO. Sometimes people who mean well end up causing distress; best to assume it wasn't meant to hurt you or insult you, and let it go.

I agree that it does sound rude, but sometimes, it's necessary. Jude 22-23 says that on some, have compassion, but on others, save with fear. Some people don't respond well to compassion, they take advantage. Whereas, with some people, you actually have to "scare the hell out of them", quite literally. But, that approach should only be taken under the direction of the Holy Spirit, I'd think. Otherwise, you'd run the risk of pushing them further away. But again, sometimes it's necessary.
