  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I didn't know where to post this, but I needed some opinions from non-believers also....

How old is?, and what is the date of Adam and Eve?

Did Moses get the tale of Adam and Eve, the Garden, the Serpent, or "El" or "Elohim" from other cultural sources, that existed at that time, if so, which ones and can you show how?

What cultures predate Adam and Eve?, and what were their religious or cultural beliefs?

God Bless!

If you go by archbishop ussher, creation is dated to 22 oct 4004bc at 6pm with adam and eve being created shortly after.

Oddly enough I find this somewhat doubtfull.

How did they arrive at that conclusion, did they do it by counting the years of the lives of the individual all the way back to Adam?

What civilizations were prior to that, and did those civilizations affect Hebrew writings and beliefs, say like, in the beginnings of Genesis?

God Bless!

The archbishop used the bible and some other documents and counted back the years of those mentioned and came to that conclusion.

You will not be surprised at the fact that I do not believe in the adam and eve story, and the whole young earth creation story.

And yes the authors of the old testement, there is no evidence that moses was one of them, were influenced by other sources for example the epic of gilgamesh, an ancient mesopotamian story dating to 2100bc that includes the story of a great flood. I include an extract from wikipedia

Tablet elevenEdit
Gilgamesh observes that Utnapishtim seems no different from himself, and asks him how he obtained his immortality. Utnapishtim explains that the gods decided to send a great flood. To save Utnapishtim the god Ea told him to build a boat. He gave him precise dimensions, and it was sealed with pitchand bitumen. His entire family went aboard together with his craftsmen and "all the animals of the field". A violent storm then arose which caused the terrified gods to retreat to the heavens. Ishtar lamented the wholesale destruction of humanity, and the other gods wept beside her. The storm lasted six days and nights, after which "all the human beings turned to clay". Utnapishtim weeps when he sees the destruction. His boat lodges on a mountain, and he releases a dove, a swallow, and a raven. When the raven fails to return, he opens the ark and frees its inhabitants. Utnapishtim offers a sacrifice to the gods, who smell the sweet savor and gather around. Ishtar vows that just as she will never forget the brilliant necklace that hangs around her neck, she will always remember this time. When Enlil arrives, angry that there are survivors, she condemns him for instigating the flood. Ea also castigates him for sending a disproportionate punishment. Enlil blesses Utnapishtim and his wife, and rewards them with eternal life. This account matches the flood story that concludes the Epic of Atrahasis (see alsoGilgamesh flood myth).

Why do I say the bible is influenced by gilgamesh and not the other way around. Simply there is no evidence of biblical writings from 2000bc to 700bc the old tesetement appears to have been composed from 700bc onwards. And yes this is not a well researched answer, relying on wikipedia(big mistake) but I hope you find it interesting.

It's very easy to do the math from Adam to Abraham. It's a little more difficult to do the math from Abraham to Jesus. There is a lot less controversy for that. From Adam to Moses when the law was given was 2,000 years. Then from Moses to Jesus was 2,000 years and the church age is 2,000 years. That adds up to 6,000 years. Then we will have the 1,000 year reign of Christ. After that on the eight day there will be a new day and a new earth. God created the world in 7 days and if will take 7 days to restore.

There was a long history of cultures predating the Hebrew Bible, all of which exchanged goods, technologies and ideas. They include Egypt, the Sumerian city-states, the Akkadian empire and Babylon; the most closely related culture was that of the Canaanites (see especially the city of Ugarit, about which a lot is known). A number of elements in the Old Testament reflect that cultural background, since it provided the mental framework and vocabulary for everyone in the area. For example, El was the name of the chief (or senior) god of the Canaanites, while in the Hebrew Bible it has become simply a generic name for any god and another name for Yahweh. The biblical story of the Flood and the creation account both show affinities with Mesopotamian stories, and were probably written at least partly in reaction to those stories. The Mosaic covenant has a structure that is similar to treaties between major rulers and their vassals.

The sea was a key component of myth: it (along with the sea monsters that inhabit it -- e.g. Leviathan) represents the primordial chaos, which must be conquered and tamed by one of the gods, who then becomes the chief god. This conception has echoes throughout the Old Testament, from the creation account (the waters in the first verses of Genesis 1, God's creation that begins by dividing and limiting the waters), through the description of crossing the Red (or Reed) Sea in the exodus from Egypt, through some of the Psalms (e.g. Ps. 74:13-15), the Temple (the bronze sea in the temple is likely an image of Yahweh's sovereignty), all the way to the New Testament, where Revelation says that when God's rule is finally established fully, there will be no more sea. What the writers of the Bible did with these inherited ideas and images can be quite interesting, and they can use them in ways that transform their meaning -- but they're still working within their cultural heritage.

Adam & Eve were created in 4004 BC, and Adam died roughly 950 years old.

Yes & no.

Moses didn't write the book of Genesis, he edited it.

Genesis was written in near real-time by those who were affected by the events they wrote about.
Neogaia said:

QV please:
If this is so, the most likely explanation of them is that Adam, Noah, Shem, and the others each wrote down an account of the events which occurred in his lifetime, and Moses, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, selected and compiled these, along with his own comments, into the book we now know as Genesis.

The time period would be after Star Wars, and before Star Trek.

Before or after Battlestar Galactica?

Are we all taped out on this subject? No one has anything to add?
Gobekli Tepe pre dates Adam and Eve and is the oldest "temple". Some would refer to it as the oldest brothel. Solomon's mom warned him to stay away from places like that.

What say you and I go get some Australian zircon and build us a church building and see if experts think we worship in the oldest church on earth, eh?

No cultures pre-date Adam and Eve as they were the first humans ever made (directly by God, the creator of everything in just six days). Simple.

Yep.... "simple".
Ignoring all the science and just sticking to a single bronze-age story is indeed simple.
Actually informing, educating yourself and studying a bit, indeed takes more effort and is indeed "harder".
