  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How often do you read your Bible?

I'm just really curious. How often do you read the Bible? I read mine everyday. In the morning I read the Proverb of the day, which is whatever the date is, like today is the 28th so I read the 28th Proverb. So every month I have read thru the book of Proverbs. It's good for me, cuz I don't retain very well LOL so I need a refresher each month.

I also have one bible that has study questions and different examples to read each day so I do that as well.
And currently in our small group, we are beginning to study Hebrews, so I am studying vs 1-4 and reading commentaries etc to dig deeper into it.

What about you?

Lol, there is nothing like adversity to make you stick your nose in the Bible. I read it everyday, before going to work and when I come back home in the evening. When/if I get up in the middle of the night and have difficulty falling back to sleep, then I pick up my Bible.

I just started to read Proverbs as you do. I like to read it at lunch time. It's great.

Also, I meet with a friend either Saturday or Sunday and we study the Bible. Right now we are studying Isaiah.

I love reading the Bible! :)

I haven't been able to read much since my husband died. However, I have recently have discovered I can listen to the bible online...and I try to listen everyday. At home, I go to sleep listening and just start back up the next day where I fell asleep the night before. By listening, I find I "read" a lot more than I would if I were reading it.

That's excellent and I feel you are feeding your spirit by doing this. Glad to see you are posting. Missed you lately, I know you are busy with kids.

I was thinking about posting a thread about understanding the Bible but, I think your thread here kind of covers that so, I will respond here if that's alright?

I have been reading my Bible more recently while I'm watching TBN & CBN programs. It helps me more in the sense that I now know how to look things up better but the thruth is... I have a very hard time understanding the Bible? How many of you who read alot have the same issue?

I'm serious when I say at times I'm really confused as to what the Bible is trying to convey to me? This is disturbing to me because I consider myself an educated man and yet I have such difficulty understanding what I read in the Bible?

I use to teach the FMCSR (Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations) when I was in the transportation industry and I graduated from pharmacy college which pharmaceuticals is very intense schooling and then I come to the Bible and I'm lost? I don't understand this and it's very upsetting to me at times? Any input in this matter is greatly appreciated!

Well there are alot of very educated people like yourself that cannot understand the bible so you are not alone. To ME, I LOVE reading the stories in the Old Testament because they are not only fascinating, but show how God uses messed up people, not perfect people, to do His will. As far as understanding the bible. The Bible itself says in James 1:5, "if any of you lacks wisdom let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." And all thru Proverbs it talks about get wisdom, get understanding and to ask God for it. So my suggestion is that before you read your bible, that you pray to God and ask Him to give you understanding. It is the Holy Spirit that helps us understand God's word. That's why unbelievers cannot understand it at all. That's also why it does no good to argue or debate someone on the Bible because they cannot understand it, no matter how "smart" they are or educated they are unless the Holy Spirit is in them and helps them. So...if you are a Christian then you have the Holy Spirit living in you, who can lead you and guide you in all truth. But you have to ask for it. The Bible also says you have not because you ask not, and when you ask you ask amiss. James 4:2-4.
So try praying first and asking God to open the Word to your heart and give you understanding to understand it.

Another suggestion....and it's just a suggestion, is something that I do. I read Proverbs every day. So whatever date it is, like today is the 10th, I read Proverbs 10 and tomorrow I will read 11. In doing this you read thru Proverbs every month, and also Proverbs is a book that gives alot of spiritual insight on how to live. Just a thought.
Another thing you can do is to look up commentaries, or get a Bible dictionary or Bible encyclopedia. The Bible is truly THE most fascinating book I have ever read. Some of it is very hard to understand and I don't understand all of it because I don't think that is possible but like I said, I ask the Holy Spirit to give me widom and knowledge and understanding each day before I open the book.
