How much formula ....

does a 3 week old baby typically drink? My son is drinking 2 ounces about every 2 hours, sometimes he wants another bottle in only an hour now! Is it to soon to up his feedings to 3 ounces or is that to much ....?

Also, he is on carnation good start which I heard digests faster than other formulas..

From what I've heard/been told.. babies eat until they are hungry and again when they're ready to eat again. If you were breastfeeding, it'd be the same, he'd eat until satisified and again when he cried he was hungry.

You can also find out at your dr's check ups.. they will tell you if baby is gaining weight at an appropriate speed or not.

At this stage it's my best guess, that babies (at least in their first few months) will only eat what they need.

3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months are growth spurts, according to the books and every mum I've spoke to.

If she's eating 2 oz and hungry an hour later, try 3 oz the next feeding to see if that'll help her go the full 2 hours. Then again, she could just be hungry...I mean you go back for seconds sometimes, don't you?

What to expect the first year suggests she may need to be burped more half way through incase she's filling up on air and during certain times of the day it's not uncommon for a newborn to take up to 4oz.

If the baby is hungry only an hour later then he is not getting enough formula each feeding. Try 3 ozs every feeding and see how that goes, if its still not enough up it to 4 ozs. EVERY baby is different. some babys eat more than others. Alot of it depends on their birth weight also. My nefew was 9 lbs 6 ozs and came home from the hospital drinking 4 ozs every 3 hours. By the time he was a month old he was on 7 ozs every 3 hours! If the baby is hungry..feed him. If 2 ozs only holds him one hour its definitely NOT enough.

At 3 weeks old, your baby could be ready for 3oz. It is better to make 3oz and not use it all, then to make 2 oz and need more.

Feed your baby when he is hungry. Every baby is different. When babies go through growth spurts, they will be hungrier than normal. 2oz. may not be enough for him now so I'd recommend to give him more formula at a time when feeding. Also, newborn babies eat a lot because their stomachs are small and can only hold so much at a time

Wow, my son never took only 2 oz. He came home from the hospital taking 4 oz. My daughter did. She took two oz every 2 hours for about 2 weeks but I thought she ate so little because she was premature. I agree with the poster who said to make three oz. better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

My daughter came home taking 4 oz every 4 hours. I would say up the formula at each feeding until he starts going 3-4 hours.

after about 2 weeks, I moved my daughter up to 4oz. every 3 or so hours. Sometimes she drank it all, sometimes not.

Feed the baby when he/she is hungry. Making the baby wait until it's "time" will only make him/her more upset
