• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Or at least like a ballpark range. I don't have insurance and I'm a poor college student. I want to start seeing a psychotherapist as I believe that I have dysthymia (a mild constant depression) that I've been able to deal with up until recently. But I also want to find a good therapist and preferably a Christian one. How do I go about finding a good one too?

Some christian counseling programs have a sliding scale of payments based on your income level. Particularly if the counseling program is non-profit or church related they would probably work with you. It could range from $45 to $90 per visit, but possibly less depending on your income level.
Some businesses also offer an employee assistance program which includes free counseling. I know the hospital I work for does that and they have contracts with 30 other companies.

Hi TrueImpossibility,

It is a good idea to look in your local phone book yellow pages under counselors and therapists or Google "Christian counselors and therapists" for your city, state. Some should be Christian or have a group name that sounds like a Christian counseling group (for example, "Cornerstone" or "Faith". Then call and ask. Ask if they are Christian and if they have a sliding fee scale. A sliding fee scale will take your income and base the counseling fee upon that.

Take care.

Thanks everyone. The pastor at the church I had been going to doesn't believe in depression, he's one of those people who would just tell you to snap out of it or something. But starting at a church is a good idea, I am looking for another church, hopefully I'll be able to find one that offers more help.

The school does have counseling but it's not free and there's a very long waiting list. I also know quite a few people in the psychology department so it would be kinda weird going over there for counseling.

I think I'll start looking around in phone books etc to get an idea of what is out there at least.
