Those are some very difficult questions to answer. Every trip has different characteristics and different equipment required and such. Have you ever been to Cabela's? it's a huge outdoors store. while driving through, i visited one near Detroit. I walked in and my jaw dropped to the floor. i almost started drooling. i only had about an hour there, but i quickly and easily dropped about $450 on gear for me and my dog. For costs outside of gear, you must consider park fees, gas, and food. On gear, once you get your basics down, ie tent, sleeping bag, pack, cooking utensils, tools, knife, and the like, the trips can become rather cost effective. You'd be buying food anyhow, find trails within an hour of home, and park fees rarely sum over $20, if even. go with a buddy and some of the costs can be split. have fun!

Absolutely! Not to mention the gear that you don't really need, but want. The cutting edge, self-propelled hiking poles and whatnot! :D I'm a gear junkie-I proudly admit it! ALthough I can't afford to buy as much as I want, but I think that's probably the case with everyone. :)

well, i'm a bit of a gear junkie myself. i love buying new toys! however whenever i'm shopping, outside of cost, i must remind myself that whatever i buy, i must also carry on my back while backpacking. that is an easy way to deter yourself from buying excessive gear! one thing i've learned though, is that paying for quality is definitely worth it. compact, lightweight, and durable qualities are worth every penny you pay! and it's always fun to look at the cool stuff they have in stores.

Amen. That's a good tip. I want titanium everything now. Titanium cookware, titanium silverware, etc. You can't beat the weight and strength of that! That will be my next hit. ;) I do want a better tent, too. I love Kelty, and almost always choose their packs because of how durable and well-designed they are. But Kelty tents are honkers. I'm talking some 16 pounds on those puppies! That's way too much for me, and I don't feel I need a 4 season tent right now. At least, I can put that one off for a while. My present tent came with a "rain beanie." One those rain flies that just cover the top, like a beanie! Hehe! :) Good if I'm not expecting any conditions because it's certainly less to carry, but if the weather gets bad...I need something more. But I want one that also has mesh on top. Good for watching the Northern Lights and stars.

The Sportsmans's Guide and Sierra Trading Post are good, too. A lot of military gear in The Sportsman's Guide, but also food, hiking gear, and various odds and ends from pearls, watches, and dishware for the Christmas end of things. But I've purchased some good sleeping bags from them, lots of gear and several coats. Someone hipped me to it a couple of years ago-great place. Sierra trading post has mostly technical gear-coats and boots. But they have several catalogs. Adventure Edge is the one where they have the hiking and mountaineering gear, Or fishing and kayaking for people who like those things.

I ususually go to a campsite, I've only been wild camping once. As for cost, it is quite cheap - the campsite fees can vary (£27 for three nights for 2 people and a car is usual) and then there is the cost of the food, but this doesn't really cost that much as we usually eat a lot of pasta.
