How big are the differences?
well I guess it's what you call Big. There are many major doctrinal issues, however, I personally don't feel that they should interfere with there day to day relations. We need to do a much better job of witnessing to the world by working together, and agreeing on what we can, and respectfully agreeing to disagree on the rest, not start finger pointing, and mud slinging.

I would definitely say the differences are huge for the most part. With the main differences being the catholic church teaching a works/penance based salvation and protestants(true protestants) teaching salvation by grace through faith. The idea of sacraments is also a huge difference, with catholics observing matrimony, extreme unction, conformation, penance, etc. as ordinances of the church, protestants, however would of course say only baptism and the Lord's supper are true ordinances of the church.
The refomers felt that we should have no ties with the church of Rome, Luther even went as far as to call the pope anti-Christ. I doubt that most protestants would go that far, but we definitely have to realize that protestants and catholics teach a different way of salvation. With protestants emphasizing Christ and catholics emphasizing deeds and Christ.
Not to mention there's the whole issue of praying to saints and Mary, but I dont' know enough about all that to go into it. Once again, I would call the differnces major and nearly irreconsilable, that's why the reformation happened.

I would say the differences are pretty big as well. There are so many Protestant denominations and basically only one Catholic faith(Catholics do no have denominations..it's only ONE CATHOLIC CHURCH)..Many Protestants believe in a lot of different doctrines but if you go into any Catholic Church on the planet.. they all believe the same exact thing. Besides that, there aren't really a lot of Protestant churches that believe in the same teachings the Catholic church believes in..an example..most Protestants believe in 2 sacraments...Baptism and Communion..while Catholics have 7 sacraments (please correct me if I am wrong about the #'s).

Martin Luther is credited with being the person that started Protestanism but there are many Protestant churches that are adamant about their non-association with Lutheranism.

A big division seems to be that Catholics believe they are the one true church but accept that it is no fault of a Protestant that is born into his or her faith and accept Protestants as being Christian...while Protestants believe in the spiritual church that includes lots of different Christian denominations and agree in individual interpretation of the bible..Also most Protestants are firm believers in Sola Scripture (scipture alone) while Catholics believe in the bible as well as oral tradition.

Catholics and Protestants aren't even remotely close in my personal opinion besides the obvious fact that they both are Christian faiths.

Hi Missythebutterfly
I attend a Holy Spirit filled non-denominational church, but I do know that the Catholic priest here in the town I live is "baptised in the Holy Spirit" and speaks in tongues. So I wouldn't say all Catholics believe the exact same thing. I believe he's a major exception the rule. Wouldn't you? God Bless, HSFSAHM

I myself used to be a Catholic but left it about 6 months ago because of how should I say- non-Hebrew/Bible elements, the Roman elements(they have their own version of the Bible) which are the various differences between the denominations.

I currently am essentially Non-Denominational(Reformed,I believe).

The Roman Catholic church has thier own version of th Holy Bible called:

The New American Bible(in U.S.)
Catholic Heirloom Edition

It originally came from Israel like a Bibles do,then they created their version for their faith,It explains their Holy Sacraments,The Rosary,The Mass,The Papacy, their variations in the scriptures,etc........

To Hector:

I'm Catholic, and I've NEVER heard of this "special Bible" you're talking about.

The Catholic Bible includes the Deuterocanonical books in the Old Testament. The New Testament is identical.

And FYI, the Catholic Church COMPILED the New Testament using Sacred Tradition.

Furthermore, you err when you say that Catholics have a "works based" salvation.

(Catholics do no have denominations..it's only ONE CATHOLIC CHURCH)..

Another example of catholics' lack of knowledge about their own religion.

I grew up in a Byzantine catholic church, and that church has eight different "rites" or denominations. The thing is, catholics don't call their divisions denominations, they call them different "rites."

Plus, there are many other forms of catholicism. It's not nearly as united as the folks around here want you to believe. The different rites don't get along together any better than the different protestant denominations do.

I don't recall seeing the rosary, the papacy, etc, in the New American Bible.  Are you sure they are in there?

Also, is there an original "Bible from Israel" that I can look at or does one no longer exist?  The protestant bibles are variations on the Catholic one, so I would like to see the original if you know of one?

lambslove, who is the head of the Byzantine Catholic Church?

And the Alexandrian Catholic Church? The Antiochene Catholic Church? The Armenian Catholic Church? The Chaldean Catholic Church? And all of the 20 different jurisdictions within these churches?

(Hint: he lives in Rome, and although I won't mention any names, his initials are John Paul II.)

In short, the head of the various Eastern Catholic Churches is the same guy who's in charge of the Latin-rite, "Roman" Catholic Church.

The Pope.

And thus the unity behind these various differing rites, and the major difference between them and the many different branches of Protestant Christianity.
Oh dear....**bf starts wringing her hands in worry, just wanting everyone to be happy and get along**
Never fear, bf.....lambslove and us Mary-worshipping, Bible-denying Papist mackerel-snappers have been through this many times before. :D

**snort**...I'm sorry Wols, I just had to bust out laughing at that last comment!!  ROFLOL.......

My husband was raised Catholic, and boy oh boy did I have issues.  I'd been married before, and his family was not happy in the least.  I refused to get an "annulment", because I personally think it's a bunch of horse-pucky, and it was wayyy to painful to relive all over again.

But I'm all good with it now!  Besides, I've given them 2 babies, and I'm considered "good breeding stock"

*sigh*  I could care less what denomination anybody is, as long as they love the Lord Jesus with all of their heart, soul and mind!  As long as you're a brother or sister in Christ with me, we'll all be at the same banquet table at the end eating like piggies!!  and here's the kicker....we won't gain any weight!!  Yippee!!

~Thanks for toleratin' my hand wringing!!  Sorry for interupptin'...please continue

~Peace in Christ,

Terri

Christopher Paul,

I'm pretty sure they are explained in it,mine covers them.

The holy bible originally comes from Isreal and was translated in many diffrent languages Greek was the first I believe then Latin came.

For English speaking protestants the King James Versions is the most popular and many protestant denominations us it.Its origin is from the Textus Receptus which was the Hebrew Bible translated into Latin,I believe the Catholic bible and many to most bible come from Textus Receptus.

Denominations like the Catholics,Jehovahs' Witneses,Mormans and others have their own versions of the bible, baiscally 1st they got a T.R. originated bible then modified it for their own faith, there are diffrences between them.

In Christ,

Hector
