How many politicians does it take to change a light bulb? Two. One to change it, and another one to change it back again.
How many civil servants does it take to change the light bulb? 45. One to change the bulb, and 44 to do the paperwork.
How many paranoids does it take to change a light bulb? WHO WANTS TO KNOW?
How many consultants does it take to change a light bulb? We don't know. They never get past the feasibility study
OK so you have heard all the corny light bulb jokes and may be wondering what this devotional is about? It's about the issue of perseverance. We could not have any of these jokes if it were not for the perseverance of a man named Thomas Edison. It is noted that Humphry Davy and Sir Joseph Wilson Swan set the ball rolling for the man credited with giving us the light bulb, but did you know that it took Edison over 2000 tries before he got it right? (And yes I checked urban legends!!)
Did he see them as 2000 failures or 2000 ways of working to get it right? Half full or half empty? Such an exercise in character building can be difficult to grasp especially if you are trying for your exams, failing in relationships, out of work for a long time (!!!???), but that is what God promises us when we depend on him. He promises results!!
Puts a whole new spin on the text "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven". Matt 5:16. I leave with you a note of encouragement for the weekend.
"No darkness in the world can ever take out the light of one candle." Stay blessed
Father, sometimes although it may sometimes seem dark, help us to persevere. Help us remember that even though we sometimes may switch off the bulb that the source of power is still there. Thank you for patience. Amen
