  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

okay, i know this is bumping an old topic, but i really wanted to put my opinion of switchfoot in here!

so don't hate me or try to bite my head off for saying this...but sometimes it seems like switchfoot is a secular band.

"meant to live" is one example...(and this is purely my opinion, don't get offended!) when they sing "we were meant to live for so much more, have we lost ourselves?," doesnt it seem like they're saying something like "let's get past religion" or "there's so much more out there"? or how about when they say "wonderin' why the world has passed him by..." or that line about failed attempts to fly?

one more thing...their album title..."the beautiful letdown" what's that supposed to represent? from an atheist's point of view...that's what atheism seems like!

or maybe he's singing from a non-Christian's point of view, saying "let's find religion because we were meant to live for so much more" (i.e. life after life)... does that make sense?

in other words, he's singing the words a lot of people are feeling in themselves and they'll listen thinking "yes, we need to live for more" and this opens doors to Salvation...

it's really hard to explain... i've never been good at explaining things like this...

not all chirstian bands have just as clear message that they should have. Sometimes it is very tempting to give up some of that 'christian stuff' so they can get more known. Now, I am not saying that Switchfoot is one of these. They use a lot of pictures and analogy that might be hard to understand sometimes..
God bless!

From "Meant To Live" by Switchfoot
We want more than this world's got to offer
We want more than this world's got to offer
We want more than the wars of our fathers
And everything inside screams for second life, yeah
GREAT lyrics! I think they managed to tap into that universal longing for more. Ecclesiastes says that "God has placed eternity in the heart's of men." Those who don't know Christ long for more than what they have, but don't know where to find it.

I've never been a "fan" of Switchfoot, but I gained a LOT of respect for them when they came out with this CD.

Switchfoot is a good band. :) I have their CD. The one thing that I would've liked to have seen in their lyrics for 'On Fire' would be capitalization.

"Your on fire when he's near you,
Your on fire when he speaks.."

It seems to me that they are singing that I'm on fire when God's near me, but they don't capitalize the You in there as in reference to God. Maybe its just me or maybe they aren't talking about God in that song.
