  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How many sciences are there?

How many sciences are there?
Well, despite the warm reply by @VirOptimus , you could have asked the question better. Because there are many ways to answer the question. There are 3 branches of science (natural, formal and social), and within them you break out into subcategories. For example, within natural sciences you'll find human biology, biology, zoology, botany, meteorology, life science, astronomy, etc. Within the social sciences you have anthropology, linguistics, archaeology, and much more. So what exactly are you asking?

So you're saying it depends on how one organizes the sciences. That's fine. What might you use to organize them? It doesn't appear on the surface that your categorization stems from the scientific method itself.

It depends entirely on how you split them up. And the boundaries are fuzzy, which is why we have topics like "geophysical chemistry."

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

If angels take up space, the area of the pinhead divided by the space occupied by one angel.

If angels don't take up space, arbitrarily many.

When I was in high school (oh so many years ago) they where just introducing the idea that some science disciplines where mixing. Like chemistry and physics, or chemistry and biology. Which made sense since the sciences are based on where people started exploring then based on cultural and personal biases. But the universe is still one big thing where everything interacts.

Biology flows into chemistry since living organisms use it to move and process food, and chemistry flows into physics since all chemistry is the interactions of atoms. It just depends on what you want to study.

You're actually going to challenge me? I don't have a dog in this fight... I simply answered your question using an example of the categorization methods that ARE USED BY THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY. So if you have an issue with those methods.... I am not your problem. Call Cornell University or MIT or something?

I'd say...there's as many as we want there to be. ;)
And that really is the answer to his question... as he asked the question. On ANY topic we can use scientific methods of analysis to achieve answers or results. Even bible studies can be undertaken from a scientific approach.

Are you saying the categorization is arbitrary? That seems a good possibility, though I would offer one practical aspect. Aside from possibly Aristotle et. al., I doubt much thought was given to formally organizing the sciences beforehand. Rather, I expect it was simply a matter of questions.

Someone made an observation and it prompted a question. That question couldn't be derived from the knowledge of existing sciences, and so it became the foundational question of a new science.

Why so touchy? It was just a question. If you're not interested, that's fine.

...that's an interesting idea about science as it might apply to bible studies. In what way do you mean; or what application do you think we can make of it upon the Bible, Ken?

Are you saying the categorization is arbitrary?

Here is a map of the sciences (from here). You can divide it up how you like. And categorisation can be done by topic studied, or by methods used, or by some combination of the two (e.g. "computational fluid dynamics").
