• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

James has never been on meds and we have never been aproached about them...I'm not sure why he would need them?

The only thing I do is put epsom salts in his lotion and I put lotion on his back every night after his bath.

What are the meds for?

Meds is quite a broad group, from something like melatonin which is a natural hormone that people need to sleep, to something like ritalin which is a strong stimulant, and can be addictive.

My son has autism and ADHD, and in the past doctors have suggested ritalin, this had bad side effects for him and we stopped quickly.

However he does take melatonin, and has had no ill effects at all, without it he wouldn't be able to sleep at all.

B.'s meds help control her flashpoint anger and help her differentiate between what is real and what is false. She is better able to navigate the social minefield and has a much better "other" perspective. B. medicated and B. not medicated are a difference of night and day. When she is on her meds, she is able to make better decisions and doesn't feel so powerless over the relentless hamster wheel that is her brain most of the time. She is able to step outside it, see it for what it is, and make appropriate decisions. She's a high-functioning aspie, though, and this is what works for us. And again, my son is autistic, and I would never medicate him. Only if he became violent and it was the only way to keep him safe.

That is probably why my son isn't on any...he sleeps 11 -12 hours a night. Only God knows what the future brings but for right now, he doesn't seem to need them...but he's only 4 years old.
My son sleeps through the night, too and he's 9. So yours might sleep through the night when he's older, too. :) I think the reason the doctor wanted to put ours on meds was for his behaviour. We went through alot of pinching, scratching and kicking. He would attack even his EAs at school. But right now, he's calmed right down and he's settled into routine very quickly this year. Praise God!

I caved in and started back on Paxil this morning. For me it seems to make the obsessions a little less obsessive, the phobias a little less phobic and the solitude a little less necessary. Unfortunately it makes the insights a little less insightful as well but I'm tired of fleeing coffee hour every Sunday after Church because I can't handle being in a room full of talking, laughing people.

Hey, forgivensinner, good for you for doing what you have to do to take care of yourself. Please don't feel guilty--sounds like you are really beating on yourself--"caved in". Guilt only compounds the other stuff we have trouble with; you aren't smoking crack to feel better, you are taking a prescribed medication to alleviate some pretty pesky (what an understatement) symptoms. Enjoy your coffee hours and your fellowship. In God's grace, R.

My son is on risperdal but I hate it. He is not dx'd yet but the doctor said that he does fit criteria for asperger's, mood disorder and adhd. I had to put him on meds because of his aggressiveness.

We are now doing a natural detox. It may take a couple of years but the doctor that we are using has had success with autistic patients. So, we'll see. Maybe he can get off of the meds soon. I've noticed that just in a month of being on the natural supplements, he is sleeping more than he used to.

My son is 7 years old and is autistic and ADHD. I'm not interested in medicating him......at least not at this point in time. He seems to be doing fine without medication.

Hmmmm........If I had been told 3 or 4 years ago what my son would be like today, I wouldn't have thought it to be possible. He's gone from being out of control to being a very lovable child with a big heart and an awesome sense of humor........a blessing in disguise!!!

Both of my kids are on Concerta. My son also takes Clonidine (it's primarily a BP med) because he was having tics several years ago. When the tics started (with a med increase) and some cussing he went off the Concerta, took Clonidine and then Adderall. He lost weight and didn't do as well. He's been fine on the present dose for a few years and we turn down any suggestion to increase his dosage.

Our Son, 10, HFA has been on Meds most of his short life. We have tried a few of the various diets, (dairyfree, No colours and preservatives etc) and found no difference in his behaviour.
We also tried the high vitamin levels of vitamin B complex ( to reduce stress) cod liver oil( increase brain function) and Anti oxidants( grape seed) however also found no difference to his short fuse and frustration outburst that were a regular occurance throughout the day.
Out of desperation and safty to our younger daughter we used the medications offered, some had adverse side efects, however one has made significant improvement to his anxiety, frustration levels and management of his anger. He now thinks more clearly, makes more sense and is calmer and nicer to be with. In fact he has a wonderful sense of humor all that is almost invisible without the medication.
Our thoughts as parents are that there is not a "one size fits all" we have learnt to be open to any ideas and solutions if it means a happier more settled and enjoyable life for our son.
God Bless

My son was initially diagnosed as ADHD. He was on ritalin, but went off the wall with it.

It wasnt until we switched to a new doctor and she went through our medical history with mediation we had tried that she told us that a child who is not ADHD and takes a stimulant will have the same effect as if he took super doses of caffine. It will increase the hyperactivity. Stimulants work on ADHD, but it was a tipoff that he might have been misdiagnosed with his reaction to Ritalin.

She did more tests on him, and as it turns out, he has been diagnosed as Pervasive Development Disorder, not ADHD.

Huge turnaround now in his treatment. He has been on Concerta, Ritalin, Clonidine, Trileptal (which is a epilepsy medication), and Zoloft through the years.

He has been socially behind for years and as a result it is really catching up with him depression wise. He's been through alot lately. He ended up with tremors from one of the medications and we ended up taking him off of everything.

Now he is off of everything except one medication. The only medication he is on now is an antidepressant, and that is only temporary.
