  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't know if this is the correct forum to post this, but here goes. Does anyone understand what this means?

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. ~ Matthew 1:17
Is this saying there are 42 generations altogether? I did a head count (below) and only came up with 41. Am I missing something here?

Is Solomon actually a part of David's generation, and Salathiel part of Jechonias' generation? If so, that might account for it. Or, did they just forget to add a name? It seems like I heard one generation is supposed to include both the father and son. Is that correct?

Hello Iacchus32 :wave:

You counted correctly except that you forgot to count all Christians as the "missing 42nd Generation:"
========================================================
1Pe 2:9 But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

2Cr 5:17 Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Gal 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. (underlines and color are my own).
========================================================

Anyone born anew as a new creature is obviously another generation begotten by God through Christ. And that would be all believers begotten anew by God through the mighty work finished on the cross by the "41st generation." (Jesus). :thumbsup:

Best Blessings,
"Arph"

P.S. Don't forget the apparently HUGE discrepancy in Jesus' lineage, between Matthew 1 and Luke 3. (Clue: the lineage in Matthew 1 is Mary's, whose name, according to proper Jewish custom, could not be mentioned apart from her husband).

Jechonias may be counted twice--once going to in deportation, once out from in deportation.

Josiah became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

Alternatively, he's the son not of Josias (see 2 Chron. 36:9)

Actually, the Zerubbabel link is the explanation. In I Chronicles, and nowhere else in Scripture, the father of Zerubbabel is given as Pedaiah, son of Shealtiel. Apparently Pedaiah died during the Exile, and Zerubbabel is everywhere else given as the "son" (=heir) of (his grandfather) Shealtiel.

""Hi All! :wave:

So some are finding it difficult to understand the greatest of all miracles, the New Birth, and why the Lord sees all believers as "Christ," "the 42nd generation." Unfortunately, not many understand the Regeneration (the New Birth) accomplished through Jesus finished work on that bloody Roman cross:
===================================================================
Mat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me.

Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. (past tense).

Eph 2:1 And you [hath he quickened] (resurrected, made alive), who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened (made alive, resurrected) us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)

Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened (made alive) together with him (Christ), having forgiven you all trespasses;

Tts 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

(underlines, parentheses and color are my own).
====================================================================

Sadly, many Christians still see themselves as mere "cleaned up sinnners," while the Lord tries in vain through His Word to enlighten them to their permanent and completed "washing of regeneration" and "renewing of the Holy Ghost:"
====================================================================
1Jo 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his (God's) seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin ("ou dunamai hamartano"="has no ability to sin" [in his spirit]), because he is born of God.

Ecc 3:14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth [it], that [men] should fear before him. (underlines, parentheses and color are my own)
====================================================================

Best Blessings,
"Arph"
