• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've spoken with a few veterans of depression, and they said it can be anywhere from a few weeks up to years.

So for any vicitm of depression out there, how long has your bout of depression lasted? (not just day to day ups and downs, but when you are definitely going through it till you are definitely over it.)

Also, how do you know when you are over it? sometimes i feel like this might be the day that i'm climbing out of it, then sure enough, later on or the next day i'm back down in the dumps again.

I've only been going through this for a little over 2 months, but sometimes I feel like i can't take it anymore!! I just want to feel normal again!! so if anyone could shed some light on what it's like to get over it and how long, maybe it could give me a little more hope. thanks! God bless!!

Ultimately, it can happen at anytime. Just a matter of not letting it happen. Saddly it doesn't take much for a person to feel hopelessness. Well that and it is easy to slide into it. Easier to think negitively than it is to look on the bright side of things, as well as how to cope with problems.

That attitude of getting fed up is good, it will keep pushing you away from the edge. How you use it that determines it's effectiveness. Start small, try to write down what you feel and what triggers these feelings. Also healthy bible study can help, for it teaches us how to listen to spirit and avoid the darkness of our sinful nature.

Be patient with yourself and forgive yourself when you have a burn out. Keep trying to pull out of it. Pray to our Lord for he will give you guidance and understand you ask.

Mine lasted from 2000-2005. But that is because I was stupid and refused to get treatment for the first few years.

My CF homepage tells a little bit about my recovery if you want to read it. It is under the part about how I became a Christian.

Well from time standpoint, practicely been diving in and out of depression from age 9-26. Had deep suicidal depression during my highschool years.

During that span, did you at least have periods that you felt good/normal? How long did the 'good' periods last and how long did the 'depressed' perdiods last?

I used coping mechanisms really, knee deep in video game playing. It would keep my mind off it, but when I tried to interact with real world. Well I fell back into self hating and etc. There were periods where I had friends doing stuff with me, card games and such. When all that was gone or died down, back into depressed mode.

I used people I played with online to keep my mind busy or away from being reminded what a failure I was. I used communicational tools like forums to make believe I was something I was not. When I worked and thought about how my real life was, it was very depressing.

Like I said, I didn't understand my problems and I had little to no hope of being sucessful. I would be all great and give a helpful hand, then I turned into selfish and lonely self.

Seriously brother depression is not time out session from God, but a symbol that there is something wrong going in one's life that needs to be solved. Can be cause by emotional pain, fear, dysfunctions, selfishness, mental illness, or physical illness that hard to cope with.

Do not stop asking yourself what is causing it, do not be satified with just enough to get by. What are your syntoms? or what do you feel like when it happens? What thoughts that trigger this? Is there a problem in your life that makes you feel like a failure? Do you feel guilt or pain for something that happened in your life?

I can only show you the door, only you can walk thru it bro.

there are several different kinds of depression from mild to chronic, clinical major depression. I have had the mild kind for a long time. I am not sure I can put it to months or days since it has come and gone and at times I have felt really good too.
I was going through a major depression when I was a teenager that lasted two years.
