Yeah Mo, when your fingers hurt, it is a sign of progress. Its like walking outside in the summer on the street with no shoes. Do it for a week and you won't even feel the stones anymore.
If your fingers go back to hurting after a while, that means you're not playing enough :)

yup yup, ps139 is right, it takes time, but eventually your fingers develop very small, but invisible calouses on the left hand from playing, it's because you're pressing very narrow strings into the tips of your fingers, and the tips of your fingers are somewhat sensitive, so, it'll take a little time for you to develop those calouses, but after that, you should be fine, unless of course you stop practicing, then you'll have to develop the calouses ALL over again. I pray God's Blessing on you're learning of the guitar, I love that instrument, and if my friend wasn't borrowing it, I'd be using mine more :). God Bless-

I have been playing for 16 years and like many of you I learn more everyday. Lessons are good if you want the theoretical approach to music. I took lessons for 7 years. It allowed me to learn all the theory associated with the art, but then I realized that lessons can only teach you so much. Then, much like riding a bike, you have to venture out on your own. I also ptay Gods richest blessing on you as you learn. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. The best advice I can give is to practice practice practice....and learn to read music, and TAB (tablature). It can help a lot!

I have never learned to read music correct. 9 years ago, when I had piano lessons. When I want to learn a piano song from notes, it takes like 4 hours. every key I have to search.
Thats the good thing with the guitar. Onze you know all the Chords by heart, its easy.
But when I play it still sounds horroble, because after every chord it takes a second to find the next chord. but as you said, thats a matter of practice and effort you put into the learning.
Thanks for your blessings
take care

I feel your pain!!! When I was 12 I could read music pretty good but I have forgotten it....I took an 8 year stint on not playing guitar, and the music reading suffered.

But when I play it still sounds horroble, because after every chord it takes a second to find the next chord. but as you said, thats a matter of practice and effort you put into the learning.
It totally is a mater of practice and effort. Its muscle memory. I have been playing for a while now and I change chords without thinking about it. Unless of course its a new chord, in which case my muscles have to learn it. Like I said above, I started when I was like 12, played till I was 13 or 14, then quit. When I picked my guitar back up when I was 20, after a few days I could play all the chords fast again - thats how powerful muscle memory is. It can take long to learn, but once you learn it its there. Just keep practicing.
