I haven't fasted in years, but when I did, it was for only for a few days at a time, and never for more than 5 consecutive days. Longer fasts are a pretty serious business, and if you are working full-time, it becomes harder to not let it affect your productivity. I also think you should keep Isaiah 58 in mind. And there are times when you shouln't fast, like when you are sick, or pregnant, or have certain medical conditions, etc.

A couple years ago... I fasted for 40 days... I ate regular foods but I only drank water.. however on Sundays I would some times have a glass of milk..

Then a couple times I fasted for 2 weeks no meat... Its an awesome experience really..

You can fast for any amount of time you want...

Last night I fasted cigarettes... My smoking was getting way out of hand.. I was depending on it too much.. and Im still learning how I could possibly get rid of this habit.. so yesterday (I thought Id try) I didnt go out & buy a new pack when I was finished with my last one in the early evening... I fought through it.. I did really well.. however I did get emotional.. at one point and actually went through all my drawers and started organizing everything.. (which needed to be done)... Then this morning I got up .. and did other things.. I fasted up until the evening.. so it was 24 hours... the longest Ive ever been without one in a very long time..

I was very reluctant to to smoke again.. however Ive only had a few since I got the pack .. It was a good experience & I really feel good about it.. knowing then when I do finally quit I wont die without it (its actually the other way around).... I just have to keep busy.. control my emotions & stick with breathing techniques.. which I tried last night.. it worked really well....

Regarding how long one should fast. I think for a newbie, we need to be cautious and not jump into a long fast. It has to start gradually until we become used to it. Normally if we are not fasting, some of us can stay without food for up to 6 hours without feeling it. So breaking from 12 noon will be a good start. But we can do more as time goes on if we are determined to grow the inner man (our spirit).

Hi,

You've gotten some good responses. I've fasted in the past...toward the end of last year I fasted from Thursday into Friday. Usually it wasn't for more than 24 hours. (I'm a slight build, so I don't have a lot to go on...although I'm a bit heavier than last year at this time.)

So to begin with, you might want to try a 24 hour fast or perhaps fast from sundown to sundown.

Hope you find fasting to be worthwhile.

Grace and Peace,

IP

The only food fast I have done was a like 3 months ago. I did it from 8am in the morning to like 6 or 7 pm the next day. So almost 37 hours or something like that. I was doing it with my boyfriend(at the time he was not my boyfriend but my accountability partner). And well our focus was on things we need to improve about our lives. Like I have a serious lust problem and from that sprouts major guilt problems. Well it was just an acknowledgment of each others problems and how we need to change. I like food fasting because the hunger reminds you to praise God.

I did another fast about 2 months ago. However, I went a week without talking to my boyfriend. Because we were planning to make our relationship official but we didnt want to loose focus on the one who brought us together, God. So whenever I thought of Aaron I was reminded of God. Same type of concept different things.

The other day I did not eat for 20 hours in my attempts to fast however...it didnt work out. I was feeling so sick to my stomach.

Try not to fast when you are feeling sick from the start of your fast. But besides that it clears your mind and is great.

I used to try complete fasts, but with blood sugar problems, fasts seemed to lead me into irritability and distraction. Being spiritually tough but publicly cranky did not seem like a fruitful way to live.

So I tried stretching out my fasts, giving up less for longer amounts of time. It worked great. I found I got some breakthroughs that made no sense and I certainly didn't deserve.

One was a solid year with no meat (which is no problem for a vegan). It was good discipline to resist at family dinners when everyone tried to be good hosts and make sure people had enough food.

Usually it isn't so much about giving up something I love, or a vice -- but just sticking to a plan that keeps me from being willful and self-serving.

Fasting literally means going without food .

An average person can go without food for approximately 55-65 days before dying from starvation .

40 days is estimated as the longest one can fast before serious damage is likely to begin to occur .

But this can vary somewhat with the individual , and the manner in which one goes about their fast .

I started fasting occasionally years ago .

I studied the subject , and learned that it takes about 3 days without food , to fully experience fasting .

So , my first fast was 3 days long . It wasn't very difficult , and it gave a greater sense of things spiritual .

Some time later , I fasted for longer periods , usually going a little longer each time .

Most of the time there were months if not years separating the fasts .

My last + longest fast ( ending 11 days ago ) was 30 days long , water and a little vitamin C ( couple squirts from a lemon once or twice a day ) . I probably drank about 8 , 16 ounce glasses of water per day , ( started the fast taking daily , one vit. C with bioflavonoids + one Cal. Mag. Zinc mineral supplement , but switched to only adding a little squirt of lemon to one or two of those approx. 8 glasses ).

The body cannot store well or produce vitamin C , and going without it for more than a few days , tends to bring on scurvy , which most noticeably involves one's gums receding , bleeding and becoming sickly , but can also have other undesirable effects .

There is a log of sorts ( here in the "fasting" forum ) , of that 30 day fast , it is titled " Currently entered into prayer and fasting ".

There are some real dangers in extended fasting , but a lot of what inexperienced people say about it is based on ignorant fearfulness . Also certain elements + industries would strongly prefer that we not learn of the pronounced benefits which can be received through prayer and fasting .

However , as with pretty much any subject / matter , there are also unbalanced extremists on the opposite side of the issue .

Know your source ; or at least seek a consensus through what are most likely to be reliable sources . ( Of course " most likely " can be a highly subjective categorization - one thing one can weigh is where a source is coming from , what do they stand to gain , and to whom do they give glory ? )

As for me , and my house , we will continue to look to , and call upon The Lord , for He alone has the words of eternal life !

May God Be Pleased !

I was wondering how long do you guys fast for?
And how long is too long or how long is safer?
Thank you ahead of time
Blessings and much love,D.O.C. aka Kristina.

Now, I'm no expert.. as I've never done it before. But, I would think that a day at a time would be well enough for a "fasting noob" like you or me. God will probably let you know when enough is enough.. but just try one day. I'm going to once I quit some other habits.
