  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How large was the flood?

Do you think Noah spent 100 years building a giant boat to escape a local flood? When God used the rainbow as a symbol that he'd never again flood the world, do you think there has never been a local flood since? Do you think countless years of erosion of the land into the sea produced the massive blanket of sedimentary rock across the face of the land of the Earth?

The Bible points to the whole earth being covered. The mountain tops were covered. Noah had to even bring birds on board which would not have been needed if it was just local. Geology shows signs of a massive flood. A big reason people want to make it a local flood is that it would wipe out evidence for an old age of the earth. No pun intended. ;)

If you're prone to taking God's Word and reading into it what the world tells you then you'll believe in a local flood. However, the Bible is very clear that is was and all encompassing flood that covered everything on the earth.

Rather than take my word on this, let's take a look at what Scripture actually has to say on the matter:

Genesis 7:17 - 24

The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. The waters prevailed and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters. And the waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep. And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind. Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark. And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days.

The Bible is a book of absolutes and man is always trying to find a way around those absolutes. The less we actually study the Bible and the more we trust scientific explanations, which are based on very worldly foundational principles, the more likely we're to deviate from His Word.

Clearly the Bible teaches that the whole earth was covered with water and that all living things died, there is absolutely no indication whatsoever that it was anything else. Read those bolded words, are any of them ambiguous? No! So trust God and His Word, not fallible man and his theories.

BTW, I had to chuckle when I read Poke's comment: "Do you think Noah spent 100 years building a giant boat to escape a local flood?" Thanks for that, it was just what I needed. :D

I chuckled too.

Thank you, Vossler, for the Biblical proofs. Obviously that is the first and foremost reason why we should believe the Flood was world-wide- because God says so in His Word. And when we look at the physical evidence, we see that it is in agreement with what God tells us happened.

Alot of Non YEC's dont take into consideration what the bible says about The Flood.
Im assuming most of us are well aware of what the bible says, so i am going to save space by paraphrasing what god said and thought.
First off , God stated that man had become very corrupted and wicked, and therefore he was going to wipe all life , man and animals.
We should be intelligent enough to assume that from the time of adam to Noah, that the population was a pretty good size of people.
Do people hang out in the same areas ? Not at all, they travel. so i can safely assume that there was no local flood that just flooded noahs area only. Every where , where man had traveled and was living HAD to be wiped out. Im sure people were spread out Every where.

Now take this into consideration.. We have no idea what the geological structure of the planet was back in the Pre-flood. It could had easily been 1 Huge continent. Or just a few perhaps. The bible never goes into detail about how many countries there were in the Pre flood.
Also what we dont know is how tall or short mountains were at the time of the Pre Flood. So people who argue about tops of mountains being impossible to be covered by a global flood , dont get the idea that mountains can grow incredible amounts in no time at all as well as be brought down in no time at all.

Not to mention what the earth went through when God Brought the flood.
Were told that the fountains of the deep were opened, we get a picture that massive amounts of tectonic shifting of the plates and volcanic activity .. I mean one cant possibly imagine all the catastrophic events that was going on. Mountains were being pushed up, mountains were being brought down, The land formations were shifting and changing.
So its perfectly safe to say that there was a Global Flood, if there wasnt , then it makes god out to be a liar, and if you think god is lying about a Global flood, then why stop there , may as well just disbelieve every thing god says.

Peter says, "Few, that is eight souls, were saved." Only eight people survived the flood, along with the animals that were on the ark. They are the ancestors of ALL the land animals in whose nostrils is the breath of life. That the flood was world-wide is clearly affirmed by Peter.

I know this thread was started a while back, but with the new activity I became aware of it. So, I have to add my two cents.

Yes, the whole globe was covered with water.

I have written the following papers on the subject:

For the water source, see:
http://www.genesistruth.org/documents/floodsource.pdf

For scriptural definitions and references related to "earth" and the flood, see:

We have the primary evidence -- the Bible clearly teaches a global flood. We also have the secondary evidence. The "geologic column" stands as wonderful testimony to a global flood. There are *HUGE* formations and layers of similar materials, spanning continents. Gigantic coal deposits show large groups of vegetation tossed together. Large formations, such as the grand canyon which is best explained in terms of masses of water rushing from a formerly trapped inland sea through *fresh* sedimentary layers. In these and many other cases, a global flood is the best explanation for their formation.
