Just for fun and because I love books I wanted to ask those here how many books they own and what they consist of. I have about 700 or so and they are mostly: theology, commentaries, sermons, Church history, biographys, expostions of individul books of the Bible and a little secular stuff. My pastor has probably
4 or 5 thousand volumes. My brother-in-law has about 25 or 30 thousand. His library takes up his whole house.

Good Day, Mlqurgw

Oh my so many books so little time, Mine is very small in comparision about 50 volumes of differnet kinds. I would spend all kinds of money on books, but my wife would go "nuts". She views my interest in the matter of leaning "theology" an addiction so I am carefull as to not cause a major fight in the issue.

Some of my books were given to me by a very kind member here at CF. I am very thankfull for them.

Peace to u,

Bill

You might want to check into getting books on CD or DVD. I didn't count them as part of my library but if I did I would probably have a couple thousand volumes. I believe you can get all of Spurgeon(66 volumes), Gill(10 or 11 volumes), and many others on CD. It is much cheaper than hardback but I prefer to have them in my hand as I read.

Never enough!

Shelf count of reformed books is right at 350, give or take a few, not counting bible dictionary, commentary, concordance, church history and such.

Secular books are kept totally separate and consist of books on grief, quilting, West Highland White Terriers, healthy eating(guess I'd better get those down to ponder over!), christian poetry, nursing texts, a very few christian fiction by Francine Rivers and some inspirational gift books.

What I need is more bookshelf room!
After coming to the doctrines of grace I boxed up all the arminian books and plan to cart them off to a used book store. This made room to increase the reformed book space! Fun!

Oh, sure, make me jealous, why dontcha? ;)

My library is pitiful, but I only just got started a few months ago. So far, I've got a little over 100 volumes. My wanted list has another 600+ volumes that I'd like to get.

I didn't mean to cause you to stumble. ;) I am sure you will accumulate many good books over time. I have spent years getting the ones I have. Just don't loan them once you have them. I probably have lost as many as I have by loaning them.

Good day,

Lets count .pdf's as well, I know Jon has alot. I have may be 10-12 .pdf's

Peace to u,

I guess you could count them as part of your library. I prefer books that I can hold in my hand though. You could count all the books you can read via the internet and that would make your library extremely large.

Yes, so true! I'm sure people mean well but the books must get placed on their shelf and forgotten. Mine are well labeled but still I've lost some really great ones that I'd heavily marked to suit myself for the the next read through. I hate refusing to loan a book when it just might enlighten one further but the loss of a book is a most painful loss! Some I lost due to the people dying that had borrowed them! Perhaps if I mentioned that it might deter their desire to borrow my books! lol

I have found many good books by going to antique malls that have used books. It takes some time but you can find some very good ones cheap. I have found that most people discard the best because they don't believe what is taught in them. I got my copies of Calvins Institutes from a bin of books that were to be thrown out. I paid nearly nothing for them. It takes some time and you have to know what you are looking for but you can spend very little money but lots of time going through used books. But the ones that are jewels are a joy that makes the effort worth it to me.

Pending a larger library you can gain great reading material from free subscription to this resource. Their material is excellent, sent out quarterly and they never ask for $ but do this as their great ministry to individuals, prisons and such in this and many other countries. The Winter 2005 booklet contains articles or excerpts by Spurgeon, Bonar, Ryle, Sibbes, Pink, Owen, and Winslow. Each quarterly booklet focuses on a topic, this quarters being 'The God of all Comfort'. They also have bible studies you can request and they will grade/report or not as to your choice. All are good!

Ooh! Books! One of my favorite topics! Let's see. . .

I am currently building my "Reformed" library which now includes books like Calvin's Commentaries, Belcher's "Journey in Authority," Botkins' So Much More (for girls and women :D), some more or less Reformed novels, and a few others. Most of the Reformed books around my house belong to my parents, thus they are available for me to read whenever I want. However, my pitifully small Reformed library is growing.

Now, for my secular library. Should I even start? Alright, I have this belief that says that all of the good books in the world are going out of style and that by the time that I have children there will be none left. Thus. . .I have been buying up all of the good classic books that I can find since I was young. I have hundreds of excellent literary works that I am saving for my children someday. I admit, book buying is a passion of mine. Whenever I see a good book, whether or not I already own it, the book literally calls to me saying, "Buy me! Buy me, Erin! Don't let me be wasted, I want to be owned and loved!" I find this call practically impossible to resist. I have doubles and triples of books like LOTR (anybody want a copy?), Pride and Prejudice, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and others. But, I have a huge library filled with awesome books. I have the Mildred Keith books, Anne of Green Gables, Sherlock Holmes, most of Jules Verne's books, and sooo many more. I have said, in the past (and to the amusement of friends), "Why go to places like Disney World when I could be spending all of that good money on books?" I'm a lost cause. But!!! do not fret about the cost of all of these, I buy them mostly at library book sales (huge bag of books for a dollar. . .). But, do NOT bring me into a bookstore...my sister will tell you that I literally have to be dragged out!

I don't have an exact count. I have a fairly large library at home and then my office at the college has a bunch....so, I suspect somewhere around 3000 not counting CD or .pdf or internet access (however, I am counting overkill.....like 12 different editions of the Apostolic Fathers!).

I have found some very good buys on eBay. I also cruise the Amazon usedbook sellers from time to time. When I was in Seminary near Boston back in the mid-90's CBD used to open its warehouse a couple of times a year for scratch and dent sale! That was always a bonanza! Too bad I was so much poorer then! :(
