• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

How is Aspergers diagnosed? I seem to have a lot of the signs of it. When I tell my family that I think I have it, they think I am crazy and say I don't. I get frustrated because I am not like other people. At the same time I don't want to be like other people. I can't relate to the way other people act or communicate.

We are still in the process of getting a diagnosis.

For my son I had to fill out a Gilliam Asperger's Disorder Scale, my son's teacher filled out an assesment, and the school board did some testing.

The other option for us was to have our Psychiatrist diagnose (which he was willing to do). The school prefered to do the testing.

It is a little different to get diagnosed as an adult than as a child. I was diagnosed three years ago at the age of 34. Not only did I take a battery of tests including IQ and the Rorshach test, my mom and my now ex-boyfriend and my ADD coach had to fill out questionaires. There apparently has to be someone to report on you from when you were a child. This is because Autism and Trauma (PTSD) symptoms overlap greatly. I have both and I doubted I even had AS for quite a while there but now I am convinced I have both...mainly due to the underlying style of thinking... I was in a group setting for therapy and repeatedly came up with off the wall solutions to things even more off the wall than most of the trauma people in the group. I hope this helps some.
