There's been some discussion and debate about the ideological split on the left...is it real...how significant is it...etc. I present exhibit A....

He wasn’t a Republican, obviously: He never professed a desire to starve the federal government, and he opposed the Iraq War, which the GOP overwhelmingly supported. But to the dismay of many on the left, and to the continuing disbelief of many on the right, Obama never dramatically departed from the approach of presidents who came before him.

There’s a simple reason: Barack Obama is a conservative.

Yup...and given the positions of many on the left today, I can see why they'd think Obama was conservative.

Obama doesn't condemn anything about the left, he's only being pragmatic, i.e., being a better politician. Telling the younger left to slow their roll is analogous to a veteran criminal telling younger criminals how to be more successful criminals. Like, if you want to destroy America, don't come out and say you want to destroy America, just say you want to "fundamentally transform" it. Obama is a moderate Democrat, so the attempts to paint him as part of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party are really questionable. He is no socialist. (On the other hand, I know people on the far left who complain that Elizabeth Warren is a fairly conservative capitalist, so this goes both ways.)

I don't think the Democratic Party has moved too far to the left, if by left we mean economic policy. I'm not happy about the constant focus on identity politics, so I dislike that aspect of progressivism, but I think it's high time to have a real discussion on modern socialism.

There's a malady called deadline syndrome, where columnists have to write stuff in order to eat. Sometimes it can be quite drivelous. Obama was smart enough to pose as a centrist, but then governed with as much progressivism as would be tolerated. Conservatism wasn't on his radar.

As noted by the article, his healthcare reform was originally developed by the Heritage Foundation. It was also implemented first (and successfully) in Massachusetts by Mitt Romney.

Which one of the most unpleasant things about conservatives--that they enjoy telling this lie.

When I was young I was a conservative. Now I am considered a liberal, and that a came about because I haven't changed my political opinions very much since I was young. Of course I was a young conservative before the Southern Strategy, which explains quite a bit of it.
