I might but unfortunately my family really has never been that close so I'm not sure how to get in touch with anyone who might know. However, my dad gave me the name of one of his uncle's to try and contact and see how much information I can get from him.

:) I know when I started I met all kinds of cousins I didn't know ! I went to a family reunion and was hugged so tightly by an older cousin I had never even met ! You'd be suprised how many "kin" you're gonna find ! Blessings on your research.

I like genealogy.....I work in a public library so I have access to a lot of things...It is a lot of fun...and addictive
:) It's very addictive. I got "addicted" early on listening to my dad tell stories of when he gre up in rural Arkansas. I've been actively researching for about 12-15 years now.

I love history anyway....I have been doing it that long perhaps.....This year I became pretty active and found out some things I had not known before.....I could never find my grandmother...I looked and looked and nothing...
Well last year an aunt died and they mentioned my grandmother's first name...I had not searched that name...Only the name she went by...Well I looked up that first name...(I did not know it before)...And there she was.....It was so exciting.....I sent for death certificates, marriage certificates and really got into it......I also have some civil war documents (my great grandfather..)...Loads of fun....

I totally understand. The same thing happened with my ggrandmother. My dad knew nothing about her except her name & where she died. I finally located a older cousin who remembered a last name that she referred to often. I researched that last name & it's forums. I posted questions and when I finally got the correct answer I thought I was going to cry ... or shout.... or something. I think I did cry a little. The cousin who identified my ggrandmother said the family had been wondering for years if she had any descendants !

I've gotten one line traced back to the late 1500/early 1600's although it's mostly based on other people's research so I can't trust it 100%. It's pretty cool though, especially when you find info about the people, like where they lived, what they did, etc.

That's one of the best parts plus finding relatives you've never known !

Hi Everyone:

My first post and I headed straight into genealogy :) I have worked on genealogy for several years. I have traced back to only the late 1700's - early 1800's. I am stuck at a "burned county" in Virginia so it's slow going at the moment.
lol I've had "brick walls" plenty of times! :) Still do, in fact. PM me anytime and welcome to CF :)

First post!!

I love genealogy.

I have my name through my father back to about 1525 or so. Most of their names are prefixed with "Sir" or "Lord" that far back. How he came to America was kind of interesting though. My many-greats grandfather participated in the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685 and was sent to Barbados the next year as a slave by the king. He was married there after getting his freedom in 1698.

I know this is an old post and you may not be keeping up on this thread, but this sounds very much like one of my great's. He too was part of the Monmouth Rebellion and sent to barbados. John Chilcote (or Chilcoat or Chilcott) was apparently an illegitimate son of the King of England. He also married in Barbados to an Alice Sanderson. He died in Maryland, Baltimore Couonty, and some of his descendents (my ancestors) moved into Fulton County Pennsylvania where many of his descendents still live, or at least live very near by. It would be interesting to know if they're related or if there is any kind of connection. I'll have to check my information again and get back to you.

I have undocumented evidence that takes both paternal and maternal lines back to the 1600's. I can document back about 4-5 generations on both sides of my family through other's working on the history, and from census records, and family grave yards. Fortunately both sides of my family have lived in the relatively same spot since the early 1700's that it makes it easy to find information, if I really set my foot down.

This year I found another family cemetary on my own. After my family reunion I visited the cemetary where my maternal grandparents, older brother, and several uncles and aunts are laid. On the way back to the highway, along an old country road, I saw a sign that said "Hendershott Family Cemetary" in someones yard. Unfortunately I had my 2 year old niece w/ me and it was raining so I didn't get to explore, but next year I know to take the time or to make a special trip just for that. Several years ago my dad led me to another family cemetary that has exactly 24 graves, the last being my great-uncle Howard. My great-great-great-grandfather and great-great grandfather are laid to rest there with their wives. I cried when I found it. I have an article of them doing a Civil War tribute at the site as my great-great-grandfather and his brother both fought in the war. It was pretty exciting. My aunt gave me his daughter's (my great grandmother ) bible she received when she was 16 and another aunt has her teaching contracts from 1900 and 1901. She was 22-23 years old.

This can be pretty exciting if you take the time to do the research. Unfortunately, it takes more time and money than I can spare right now. I keep hoping to win the lottery so I can quit work and do this full-time ;)

Blessings

I finally broke down and bought family tree maker and haven't stopped using it since!!!! It has a feature where you can go online and search for your ancestors and then when you find information you can merge it right into your family tree! It's awesome! With this, I was able to take a branch on my mom's side back to 1498, England!! Now, this is undocumented of course, but there are enough leads and clues and enough documentation where other's have done the research that I can go back and verify the information if I ever get the opportunity!

Blessings
