The most streamline way that doesn't require a third party program/extension to download is to put "ss" at the start of the URL, which redirects it to SaveFrom.Net. From there you can select "Download video in browser" and download it directly as an MP4.
e.g. Say you wanted to download the video from "https://www.y outube.com/watch?v=-JW2z_kP-v4". You'd change the URL to "https://www.ssyoutube.com/watch?v=-JW2z_kP-v4" and it will redirect you to SaveFrom with the correct video URL.
It does encourage you too download a third party utility underneath it, but don't bother. The output you get from doing it this way is perfectly fine.
I'm not sure how this effects YouTube's T&C, but just to state the obvious, don't use it to download or distribute copyrighted materials.

However, if it's a video of a song and you just want the audio portion of it and want to save it as an MP3 file to listen to, you can use www.listentoyoutube.com
Finally, if you want either the full video or just the audio portion and want to be able to choose exactly what format it is saved as, use YouTube to MP3 Converter - Convert YouTube to MP3 in seconds
