How do you talk to god?

Hi forum,

Firstly please forgive me if my question sounds anything other than polite inquisitiveness, I certainly don't intend to bring any disruption to peoples faith or cause offence in any way.

I''m 36 years old and have been agnostic for 20 of them. I keep an open mind, follow all the debates about Creation vs Evolution with great interest. there is always great points of view from both sides or the argument. I can't commit to atheism any more than I can commit to a faith, purely because I don't know all the facts yet, therefore I continue to sit on the fence.

I think for me now it all comes down to one question. How does god communicate?

I'm sure many of you would agree, that for Prophets to receive information (information that forms the basis of most modern religions) and indeed, for every faithful christian that has a relationship with god, some kind of communication must occur?

In your experience is this communication one way or two way?

Does god just listen or does he talk as well?

For those of you who talk to god is there an actual audible voice?

If not, can you explain how you know he is listening?

Very interested to hear peoples thoughts and experiences

Peace :)

hey
in my case, i think i'm more of a talker than a listener with God
but i have heard His voice once or twice, but its not a voice you hear with your ears, more like a voice in your head. i know that might sound a little strange, but its different than just thinking to yourself. i don't really know how to explain it any other way.
there's a story in the bible (1 Kings 19:11-12) where God's is going to pass by Elijah. there was a big wind, earthquake and fire but God wasn't in any of them. He was in a gentle whisper. i heard that the original word in Hebrew for the whisper is something like an in audible voice that you don't listen with your ears for
as for knowing whether He is listening or not, i'll admit that sometimes it doesn't seem like my prayers are reaching Him, but i just trust that He does hear. i'm pretty sure there's a verse in the bible that talks about it, but i'm not quite sure where it is sorry!
when it does feel like He's listening, it's kind of hard to explain again. it's really just something you feel, or at least it is in my experience. that's the best that i can explain it

Hows it,

I don't recall every hearing voices or any audible message from God. I do feel completely confident that he hears my prayers. That may seem odd, but it's as if I'm talking to a friend in the room right beside me. It's like I feel the Holy Spirit communicating to my spirit within me. I'm an analytical person and not typically the sort that would say I'm positive of something that I cannot prove with some kind of evidence. This feeling, however, is incomparable to anything else that I've experienced and leads me to believe this is a form of communication from God. So for me he speaks through his Holy Spirit directly to my spirit within. Biblically, in addition to the Holy Spirit, he speaks through angels, visions, dreams, audibly and of course through the scripture itself.

Could you expand on this please? So it was an audible voice inside your own mind, but you feel it was seperate to your own thoughts?

Did this voice introduce itself as god?

Did this not frighten you?

What words were heard? Were they comforting, instructing, useful....?

Dear montgolfier. God is our Heavenly Father, He made us in His image, only we in this Universe can think and reason. God knows our hearts, He knows our thoughts and wishes. If you wish to talk to God, wait until you are alone, then tell God what you wish Him to know. God is no magician, He will not act as one, either, just listen and let your thoughts lead you. God will answer you, you may be sure of that, but remember that God knows your innermost thoughts. I say this with love. Greetings from Emmy, sister in Christ.

Thanks to Montgolfier for a great question, and no offense should be taken.

To a certain extent God has already said all that we need to know through the testimony of Jesus Christ, our salvation to eternal life in relationship with God is secured in Christ.
As to how to talk to God that’s quite easy, we talk to Him as we would atlk to anyone about anything we want within the parameters of His Biblical testimony, that is who He is and what He has done. As to how to hear from Him specifically apart from what His word has already told us, that’s another matter. We may hear an audible voice, we may ‘hear’ as He lays thoughts and words on our mind and we may hear other Christians say things that we realise God is speaking to us.
I have never heard God audibly, and I have only sometimes heard God ‘speak’ to me about specific things or answers to prayers, most of the time I do not hear, but I can say that the times I know I have received answer to prayer, what has transpired is exactly what God said would transpire, and this is supernatural is quite awesome.

I would also affirm what Emmy wrote, we may hear at any time from God if we are open to it, but essentially Jesus advised us to go to our rooms on our own and pray to God who knows what we need before we ask.

I think a problem with this idea of commication and talking to God is that we percieve God as this wise old man with a beard sitting on a throne. And when we "talk" to him we then imagine this God figure listening and it seems natural that he would respond just like we are talking to a human. the problem is God is not that image. I don't think we can fully gasp "what God is" in physical form but I'm certain it doesn't look like human. I'm quite certain he can appear as a human however I don't think his nature forum, if there is such a thing with God, is human. We are his design and we are made in his image but that doesn't mean his physical appearance. The human form has limitations and God is limitless if God looked like a human then it would stand to reason that he would have similar limitations as a human does.

So if God is not in human form he doesn't have human vocal cords so why would he naturally communicate this way? If I have a dog that dog communicates with me in the way the dog knows how and how the dog is designed; the dog is incapable of communicating with me like a human so I don't expect that. God is not a dog, he is not designed and he is incapable of nothing but the point is we all use what comes natural to us and although God can use an audible voice I also know there are far more complex ways of communicating that may be a more natural expression of God.

When I pray I pray as I would talk to a person but there has been countless times where I feel confident in an response. It is not through an audible voice but even still I feel God has "spoken" to me and I am aware of what he desires. To me that is an example of one-on-one communication with God and that is private with me however I believe he speaks through any sort of environment. God knows how we respond to things and he will use what "works" for us when he communicates. I don't think it would be necessarily be a compliment to have God speak in a audible voice as it may show your own limitation of dialog with God and unwillingness to receive God in a different way. When he speaks we need to receive and communicate back and when we speak we need to expect to receive a response.

The dialog we use can be through our everyday activities or through direct responses in prayer or through worship or many other ways. I think what is important is your heart not necessarily the method. Prayer is good because it allows us to focus more deliberately on the will of God but to say that is the only communication we have is a cop-out. Grace allows us to continually entire the direct presence of God. We are to be one with God and he with us and this is what Grace is for (forgiveness is a part of the process but ultimately it is be in communion with God) So with that in mind our every breath should be a part of the dialog we have with God. How God chooses to communicate with us I don't think will be an issue when we sincerely communicate with him.

I don't really understand what you mean when you say "spoken to me". It sounds like you feel like you have been answered, like there has been communication but you didn't actually 'hear' a response? Can you give an example of how you feel god answered you?

I hope it's OK asking these personal questions, I'm really trying hard to comprehend this. From a standpoint of someone who doesn't talk with god, it's very interesting.

Here is my major example of hearing God's voice via thoughts (I have never heard any voice out loud). I was really struggling whether to believe in God at all for years. Because I was sinning (and I knew that I was) I was finding it harder and harder to believe that any type of faith I could possibly have would be genuine, that religious beliefs were all a coping mechanism etc etc. No prayers were being answered at all which made me even more willing to believe there mustn't be a God.

One day when I got home after I had heard a street evangelist preaching I asked very sincerely "God if you are real please prove yourself to me!!!!" Immediately the thought came to my mind very clearly "disprove the Gospels...." I had read many christian apologetics books years ago which provided all the evidence to support Christianity. I knew I could not and the most logical conclusion was that it was all true. Attempts to dismiss Christianity have to ignore so much historical evidence it is not funny! Checkmate.

Somewhat reluctantly I said "OK, if you want me back (following God as a real christian) you've got to make sure I never get away". I still did not feel repentant but started reading the Bible and some christian websites. However over the next couple of weeks I "felt" (no thoughts this time) that I needed to read the Book of Proverbs Proverbs 1 to correct my self-destructive belief systems which had developed from a difficult family background and several other major issues.

Chapter after chapter convicted me of how I had been sinning mainly via thoughts which were totally rebellious to God. That is what led me to genuine repentance and I have not backslidden since. Soon after that I went to a church and the very first woman who spoke to me was starting up a woman's group who were specifically struggling with the same issues as me! Boy that proved to me then that God really was after me. :)

Because of what I have experienced I believe that God speaks most clearly via His Word i.e. the Bible, but can also communicate through our feelings and sometimes clear thought messages as God alone decides. He will not do what non-believers demand to test that there is a God to prove Himself though. I think that is something that atheists in particular conveniently forget.

It has been my personal experience that God speaks in a number of ways.

- He has spoken to me through someone else, telling me something that can only be from God (lke, there would be NO WAY the person could possibly know what they were responding to).

- He has spoken to me through Bible reading. I'll read a verse and it will just jump out at me, like, "This is for YOU, right now." The first time this happened I was homeless and I read Matthew 6:25-34. I cried and said, "Thank You."

- He has spoken to me through some other source. I almost broke up with a boyfriend and, when I prayed about it, as soon as the words, "Please, God, give me a sign as to what to do" were out of my mouth, a song came on the radio that told me that we belonged together. That boyfriend has been my husband for 25 years.

- He has spoken to me through a voice...not quite "audible", but not exactly just "in my head". It's really hard to describe. For instance, when we were expecting our second child, we were having trouble coming up with a name for her. I was reading a short write-up about the mother of John the Baptist, when I heard, "Her name is Elizabeth" (my husband got the exact same message in almost the exact same way).

I have always made sure that anything that may seem of God did not go against Scripture, and that's how I know that it isn't some other source.

How does God communicate?

Hi and welcome to CF! I'm a musician and have never heard G-d speak in an audible voice. The only 2 times He ever gave me any revelation via sound it scared the living daylights out of me!!

He has given me many many visions, always with a complete knowing of the meaning, simultaneous with what he was showing me. Mind blowing experiences all!

Ultimately He speaks to us through His written Word, the Holy Bible. It's important to have the proper attitude approaching it to gain this experience, and here's my perspective on what I've found that to be:

1. Approach the Bible with the attitude that it is God speaking to you, telling you about how to relate to Him. Pray with a quiet, meditative spirit, for exactly that. Ask Him to show Himself strong to you, in ways you haven't known yet. It's ok to stir up your hunger, but try not to let that stir up your emotions.

2. Do this every morning, and every evening. We can talk about Scriptural reasons in depth later, but it is God's way.

3. As you read, anything that looks good PRAY FOR IT. Specific examples I've found powerful:

a. Is 50:4 "The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to [him that is] weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. (Jesus got this, prophetically. (Jesus got this, prophetically. Talk about humility!)

b. “That[wash my mouth]the[wash my mouth]God[wash my mouth]of[wash my mouth]our Lord Jesus Christ,[wash my mouth]the[wash my mouth]Father[wash my mouth]of[wash my mouth]glory, may give unto you[wash my mouth]the[wash my mouth]spirit[wash my mouth]of[wash my mouth]wisdom[wash my mouth]and[wash my mouth]revelation[wash my mouth]in[wash my mouth]the knowledge[wash my mouth]of[wash my mouth]him:” Eph 1:17

c. Realize EVERY instance of "the wicked man" in Proverbs is you (me / us).
Yeah, ouch.

4. If there's time for more involved praying after this, fine; but more likely there will be other things you need to go do. Don't think they take you away from God because they DON'T! Just don't leave home w/o Him. It's in the doing that prayer seems to be most helpful. "Pray w/o ceasing," keep a prayerful attitude; there is room in His kingdom for our own unique style. The calling is to abundant LIFE.

Hi forum,

Firstly please forgive me if my question sounds anything other than polite inquisitiveness, I certainly don't intend to bring any disruption to peoples faith or cause offence in any way.

No worries. Feel free to inquire.

Uh...I wasn't aware there was a fence -- at least not as far as God is concerned. Christ said,

Matthew 12:30
30 He who is not with Me is against Me...

I'm sure many of you would agree, that for Prophets to receive information (information that forms the basis of most modern religions) and indeed, for every faithful christian that has a relationship with god, some kind of communication must occur?

Yes.

In your experience is this communication one way or two way?

Two way. I speak to Him in prayer and He speaks to me via His Word, the Bible.

Does god just listen or does he talk as well?

His Holy Spirit illuminates the Scripture to me, sometimes indicating very specific actions for me to take thereby. Mainly, however, I must apply the truth I find in Scripture wisely, not wait for some special, divine "voice" to command me.

For those of you who talk to god is there an actual audible voice?

Not for me -- yet. He may have to others. He did so in the accounts of Scripture.

If not, can you explain how you know he is listening?

Primarily through answered prayer. There is also a deep, abiding awareness that God is present and listening.

Here are a few verses you might consider:

Hebrews 1:1-2
1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son...

Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

2 Timothy 3:14-17
14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

1 Kings 19:11-13
11 Then He said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord." And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake;
12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

John 16:7-14
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and you see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.

And to you.

Selah.

I have heard Gods audiable voice on many occassions. It is just the pathway God has chosen for me so far. I really Do not hear him that often but I have included stories from my life where God has spoken to me. When God speaks it has a good outcome, something good is the result. It is encouraging for some one. Below are the true stories from my life sofar, I hope to be able to add other stories as time goes by, I am not yet at the point where I can decern Gods voice easily, it is often looking back on something I can say "that was God".

One morning I got up and walked into the hall and I heard a voice that I believed was God say "How would you like to be stabbed in the Valley". The Valley was known as the rough end of town, and the voice scared me a little, I wondered if I had done something to offend God. I had planned to go down to the Valley to ask people out to church as was my habit at the time. In the end I went anyway regardless of the fear. I walked up to the first person I met and asked him if he would like to go out to church. He said to me "I am an atheist, I don't believe in God". I just said "fine", but hoped to change his mind. He then proceeded to unbutton his shirt and showed me scar marks up and down his chest and stomach. He said to me, "I was attacked by a knife wielding man in the Valley some time ago and spent months recovering in hospital, How could God allow that to happen to me". Then I knew why God had said in the morning "How would I like to be stabbed?". God understood this man, but had a good plan for him. Some weeks latter this man came out to church and became a Christian.

Some time after the second Gulf War an Australian man Douglas Wood was captured by terrorists in Iraq, who made demands for a ransom or he would be executed. I set about fasting and praying for his release, I said to God "You know where he is....tell me". Three words entered my mind ABC, Bizaar and "A-meal". I thought "I am going crazy what has all that got to do with him. Bizaar I though "this is Bizarre". I thought maybe "A-meal" is a town so I searched a map of Iraq for a town of that name, but found nothing that really matched. Some time latter Douglas Wood was freed by US troops who came across his captors. It was not until latter that I actually discovered what the three words meant. I was on a forum libertyunites.us and came across a post by a user called ABC in the post she appealed to the captors to release Douglas Wood because he had gone to a/or the Bazaar and bought food for homeless people and had provided them with "A-meal". I believe God saw this action too and blessed Douglas Wood with an escape from his captors.

One time I thought about suing some one but felt bad about it because I did not want to give a bad impression about what a Christian is like. So I prayed and asked God to show me clearly what to do. Latter that day I opened my bible at random, selecting a random verse and it opened to 1Co 6:7 "Nay, already it is altogether a defect in you, that ye have lawsuits one with another. Why not rather take wrong? why not rather be defrauded?" So I knew what God was thinking, no lawsuit. From this I do not believe God was saying all law suits are wrong just this one was.

At one point in my life I was praying for scientific cures for illnesses like cancer. Because I was on a science kick I thought would it not be fun to create a real life dinosaur. I wanted Jesus just for fun to show me how to create a Real Live Dinosaur, he can show us anything you know if he wants, but when I asked him how to start recreating a Dinosaur. Jesus spoke into my head the sentence "bood, a term I had never heard before. I decided to look it up on the Internet and I found out the following: You see, the children of Semai are taught from an early age, the concept of "bood." If a parent asks a child to do something and the child replies " bood," it means in other words, "I don't feel like doing that," and the matter is closed. Bood means gently No.

One day I was witnessing to a Muslim and he asked me why we ate pork. I used the verse out of the bible which says "It is not what enters the mouth that defiles a man but what comes out of the mouth". After some general discussion I finished for the night. I asked God to give me a verse from the bible to encourage me. I opened the bible at random and selected a random verse. It opened to the exact same verse that I had used with the Muslim. The one about food not defiling. So I knew that God was approving of what I had been talking about.
"What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him "unclean.'"- Mat 15:11

Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun. - Ecc 7:11 I have always considered it wise to seek God for every thing in life. By this I do not mean “God, what should I eat” or “what should I wear”. Not small insignificant things but things that matter. God cares about the things that we see as significant, things that are important to us. There was a point in my life where I was single, unmarried and constantly bombarded by the worlds system of doing things, a system to which I was diametrically opposed. I wanted to find a partner, but was not really sure how to go about it. By trade I am a computer programmer so the Internet was very familia to me. So I tried internet dating. I remember getting to a point of meeting quite a few people but not really fully clicking with any of them. So I prayed and said out of all the thousands of people that are online in the world there must be some one who could make a good partner for me. So I deliberately listened for God’s voice, and prayed once. The word “Grace” entered my mind. So I typed “Grace” into the search box (that was used to search for profiles). The first profile to come up was of Ru Chen. I had been contacted by Ru Chen once, but we were unable to send messages to one another over the site for some unknown reason. So I tried to contact her again, but again with no success. Some time latter Ru was able to contact me using an email I had sent to her when she had first contacted me, after chatting online for some weeks we decided to meet. We went out together to the movies and just eating out, and seeing each other for some time. Eventually we decided to marry. We went out and bought a ring. Some months latter we got married. It is one of the best decisions of my life so far, we have a great relationship.

Act 17:30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

I often ask God for something and quickly roll the dice looking for an answer (his answer), which must really upset Him since I would not do that to even you whom I do not know.
I have heard God after pray, meditation, study and fasting. It has not been an audible answer, but usually one I would not have thought of on my own. A lot of times I am praying for someone else and God lets me know what He wants me to do, which is not what I was wanting to do, but doing it is very rewarding. A lot of the time I have to think back and see what God was really trying to tell me at the time since I see the result now.

Having God speak to you, so that you hear what He says, and recognize His voice, are good goals. I have sought this for decades, with satisfying results. According to scriptural wisdom, this is a necessity if you wish to prosper spiritually, wish to live a rewarding, profitable, glorious life.

First, His sheep know His voice. If we don't know His voice, how can we hope to be His sheep?

Second, faith comes from hearing the "rhema" or spoken word of God. Without faith, it is impossible to please God, and whatever is from faith is sin, and hence, death.

Third, we live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Present tense. The past words recorded in scripture are helpful, but we do not live by them.

Fourth, the hearing ear is given by God, who makes us able to hear, if we ask Him aright. That is, unselfishly, to accomplish His purposes, not ours.

Fifth, "keeping His commandments" is essential to our spiritual life. But we do this by obeying His voice, to do the commandments He has written. "Keep" means not only to protect from harm, but to ask Him what He would have us do. To repent, we are called to ask Him what to repent of, how to make restitution, make the way smooth for the weak limb, etc. As He speaks, and we confess, we are redeemed and delivered.

The fastest way to learn to hear God speak is to pick some written commandment, to retire to one's prayer closet, and ask Him to tell us how to obey.

Sixth, the word confession means "to speak with." To "confess" words by which we are saved, we have to first hear Him speaking those words. Our Lord and example, Jesus Himself, said that He only said what He heard the Father saying.

Seventh, idle words greatly inhibit this learning. Phrases such as, "The Bible says..." or "I feel that God wants me to...." are real killers! (As in "Death and life are in the power of the tongue...") Practise saying, "I believe God told me...." or, "I asked God, and believe I heard Him say...."

Eight, we are sternly admonished to seek "spiritual gifts, especially that we might prophecy," with the counsel that we prophesy in part, and our prophecies are profitably submitted to others for judgement. Hearing God, of course, is exercising the foundation of the spiritual gift of prophecy. The words we hear are elevated to prophecies for the church when God speaks to us words for the church, but personal words from God are similar.

Ninth, to those who have, it shall be given. When God speaks, and we hear, we ought to confess what is said until faith comes and we can act on it. Then we will hear more.

Tenth, as members of a body, hoping for communicative input from our "head," we must be "connected" or jointed to the other member that joins us to the body. My head cannot "speak" to my hand unless my hand is attached firmly to my wrist. The nerves from the brain simply cannot get to my hand. Find your connection member, and form a tight joint. God wants to use you to do glorious works. My hand, disconnected, plays a squeaky fiddle.

If you seek Him with all your might, you will find Him. My first experience hearing God speak required my sitting up for an hour at 3:00 AM, with an open Bible, waiting, for three nights. Then He spoke, simply saying, "Here I am." It was neural, but not auditory. And totally convincing, an unforgettable voice.

While I'm glad you get an audible voice, G-d can "speak" to us in many ways ...

Not audible, neural. It sounds in my brain as if I.m being spoken to, but my ears do not seem be involved. Go figure.

But then, there are also the "many" ways you mention. I have found it profitable, though, no matter how the word comes, in confessing what I "hear" into faith, to simply refer to it as "I believe God told me...." When a prophet speaks to me, the temptation is strong to report that "So and so, God's prophet, told me....) When I say such things, I repent, and rephrase into simply, "God said...." The same when, reading the scriptures, the Spirit nudges me and I have the sense that God was speaking the verse to me. Then I am tempted to report, "The bible says...." More repentance. Faith comes more quickly when I simply say, "God told me....."

When I have heard amiss, these confessions don't feel right. So I go for a confirmation. The same for when I and another hear different messages. Confirmations are generally a good idea. Two or more witnesses.

God speaks to me through Jesus. Jesus speaks to me through the holy spirit. The holy spirit speaks to my human spirit. My human spirit operates in the subconscious level but the messages do get through to me on the conscious level, eventually. It's all very mystical, but very efficacious (love that word). :)
