Hi

I have been thinking a lot lately about how I pray, and I was wondering out of curiousity if anyone has any particular way that they pray each day, and would like to share it!

For me personally, and it obviously can depend on what is happening at the time, this is how I pray (albeit it's a bit disorganised):

1. Say thanks to God for a few things that particularly come to mind that day. Say thanks in general for everything.

2. Ask for God's forgiveness for any sins committed, and ask for the strength to avoid sin.

3. General requests e.g. hope this goes well, please look after my friends, things like that.

4. Say thank you again and ask for guidance to do the right thing by God.

So that's how I pray, how do you pray!

Dear Laura83

Let your spirit be your guide. This is not a form request. When you pray put your whole being into it and remember GOD knows your needs before you ask!!!

Personally I feel there is ONLY ONE thing WE can give GOD.

" OUR THANKS AND PRAISE "

Other than that I feel JESUS gave us a prayer.

" THE LORDS PRAYER-OUR FATHER "

We are warned about long prayers or prayers that repeat themselves.

WHEN PRAYING REMEMBER:

X Even though you can't see him, GOD is there!!! O
( click on the x and drag to the O ) ( then see who is with you ) steven

As a general rule, I use the Lord's Prayer as my guide in my prayers; trying to incorporate the elements found in that prayer into my own. On occasion, when I am super tired but I know I should pray or maybe right as I am falling asleep, or even when I just don't know what to say, I might just say the Lord's Prayer itself in repitition. I sincerely hope that this does not cross the line of vain repitition.

I am sure we all have our unique style, if you will.

For me, in the beginning of my understanding I prayed as a child, who knows God is her Father.

The Lord has just recently changed this for me. Reading scriptures and meditating on them. I go out alone and just meditate, get my heart, soul, mind and strength focused on him. It is then he comes to me through the scripture (Word/Jesus). The Lord begins to speak to me and teach me from what I had been meditating on and also from other scriptures. He even uses my life examples to teach.

This has to be my favorite way of all, because it is like he is with me in person, like he was for the disciples.

And even when I really need his help, scriptures come to me. The one day I was so tired and weary and in deep need of rest, the Lord had me call for a Sabbath Day. For he is Lord of the Sabbath, and did many healings on the Sabbath day. These verses were meditating in my mind. And I just prayed the only way I knew how. To call out for his help and his rest.

The miracle came the next day, for I was totally given a Sabbath day (on the Sabbath Day). Rest from the Lord is way more interesting than I could have ever imagined, for the rest came to me by healing the problem inside the family. He knew my burden and healed it, thus giving me rest.

I immediately praised him for the great thing he had done unto me! I even spoke to this person, and seen how the Lord worked through her to make this possible. I shared my faith with the faith of this fellow believer, and then we both could praise God together!

God is just awesome!

(*this comes from here: John 4:23-24 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth).

God Bless

I just start talking to God as if I was talking to a friend. If I have anything that's bothering me I will just say Jesus please help me with such and such or please give me strength or peace or whatever. Also instead of asking for patience I ask for God's patience. I had talked to my pastor about praying one time because I tend to pray or ask for the same things and I didn't know if it was wrong to do that and she said absolutely not. She said that most people will pray about the same situation until it's resolved and that there is no harm in doing that. I had joked around by saying that God is probably getting sick of me praying about the same thing all the time. lol After I am done praying I do say, thank you in Jesus' name Amen but as far as starting off by saying a certain thing I don't do that. I just start talking and say whatever comes to mind. If I'm alone I will say it out loud but a lot of times I just say it in my head.

With God is understanding, power & wisdom. God wants to lead us to the point where, him alone becomes the source. our everything. So our love for needs re always on check. Delay is not denial, but is a time to draw more closer to God. It leads us into maturity. Develops our patience. Also helps our confidence against the devil when we refuse fail or give up..........

The long prayers thing is from where Jesus was talking about people who like to make long showy prayers to be seen by others. It is not the long prayer that is really the problem, it is the to be seen by others that makes it wrong.

As for the repeat things, well there is a verse that says "do not babble on like pagans". I think it is refering to a chant. I don't think it is wrong to repeat something if it is truly on your heart. Which that is the most important thing. I don't think God cares about the words, the length of the prayer, the structure, or your physical posture so much as you honestly bring your heart into the matter. Be open and honest with God.

For me, prayer is a constant one-on-one communication with Jesus who is always with me. It's much more about listening than talking. Scripture tells us that Jesus has made the way for us to run to the throne of grace to find grace & mercy to help us in our time of need. I think you can run to God about anything in any way at any time - we just don't leave the throne the same way that we came.

If we think about it - everytime that someone spoke to Jesus in the gospels was a prayer - a person talking to Jesus was a person talking to God. Some came begging, some came hurting, some came in joy, some came in need, some came whining, some came angry, some came asking, some even came telling... But every encounter with Christ was lifechanging. That is prayer. We move in and out of talking and listening to God throughout our day in every situation, in every emotion and mood, in every moment - for His desire is that we BE with Him and that we intimately engage Him in love. abbasdaughter

Thanks!

Brian - don't worry so much about how much and when. The Holy Spirit will lead you as you pray. You may pray something and feel that it's completely answered and done that day. You may pray and continue to pray the same thing throughout the day or weeks. God looks at your heart - there's no magic formula, only a sincere, humble heart that longs to hear from God and that wants to obey His pleasure.

As for repetition and praying in front of others. It's not a sin to pray corporately or even on this board. It is still a heart issue - are you praying because God led you to pray - or are you praying in hopes that others will see your flowerly eloquence or repetitively so that others will admire your diligence - these are the motives God looks at. Live in the grace of God and enjoy the privilege of an intimate friendship with Him. abbasdaughter

Jesus taught us how to pray :

Mat 6:5 And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.
Mat 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.
Mat 6:7 And in praying use not vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Mat 6:8 Be not therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Mat 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Mat 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
Mat 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.
Mat 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Mat 6:13 And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Mat 6:14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
Mat 6:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
--------

If I follow the Lord prayer:
- Praise GOD
- Ask GOD
- pray for others

Once I heard a preacher praying saying this "GOD I pray for you to keep this church that worship you correctly unlike the other Churchs!!!" This prayer obviousely is not a good one. Cause that preacher praised his church insulting the others.

When I pray I usualy start of thanking God for what he had done for me and others, bring before him prayer requests and admit my short comeings and ask for him to help me overcome these short comeings. From there I pray as the Lord leads me. He will often show me things that I had not thought of that I need to pray about and will bring to my mind questions that I have, which he will then answer.

Prayer cannot have a strict format. Prayer is a conversation between two individuals and as such both of them have an effect on where the conversation goes.
