How do I know that the voice speaking to me is God or my conscience.
Yesterday I went to do something that I knew was wrong, and as I was about to it, I heard a voice saying "NO, You know it's wrong, Don't do it". I stopped straight away and felt really frightened. I have been a Christian for just over a year now and have never had a feeling like this before.
What do you think, was it God?

this is a good question justpray and one i struggle with ... and i am more in the process of becoming a christian (just due to a bit of emotional tug of war between people i love i am finding it hard to define what i am)
and yes sometimes i have that feeling and i think, is that god? no i think thats just my brain.
it's hard to tell isn't it?
i feel more assured of what god wants after i have been to church

sorry if thats not much help

and even if it is your concience- you would still probablly do well to listen to it ( :

The Holy Spirit certainly influences our conscience. I believe it was probably God. The Holy Spirit will never go against what He has given us in writing - the Bible.

Hi Justpray, have to agree with this quote. Knowing scripture is important
to be able to test all things.

I remember in scripture that the Holy Spirit was brought into this world to do two things. Convict the world of sin and of righteousness. I would say the Holy Spirit was with you in that, if you have trusted Christ as your Savior.

From the day we were born, we have had the Law of God written on our hearts (Romans 2:14-15). So our conscience truly is the only thing we have naturally to teach us any reality of right and wrong. It makes us aware of sin, but there's nothing to convict of sin and of righteousness until we accept Christ as our Savior.

I believe it was God. I've only been a christian for not even a month but I have had conversations with God about things. Somehow, I don't really know how, I can seperate the voice of God and the voice of the Devil. It is hard for me to do but somehow I manage it!!

The same kind of thing happened to me. Scared the daylights out of me too. In the end, though, it reminded me of the promises I made at baptism. It's hard to explain. Trust that it was God. Like the others said, God won't lead you astray, or else you would've gone ahead with the thing you knew was wrong.

I tend to believe that the Holy Spirit and ones conscience are one and the same. I believe that we are convicted and feel the pangs of guilt and get internal "warning signs" that something is wrong.

As far as deciphering Gods voice in general from your own thoughts or from Satans voice or whatever, as was said here, go by scripture. If you hear God telling you to rob a bank or kill someone for fun, well, obviously thats not God. Some issues are not so black and white though, so if you are unsure, read the Bible and pray about it. If its something God wants to you understand, he will most definitely make it clear to you.

i hate to perhaps quibble with words because the above is a very good answer to the purpose question of the Thread. However, i would point out that the Holy Spirit works THROUGH the conscience--informing us and directing us by use of this medium--but is not the same as the conscience. To take an extreme example--the conscience of a cannibal would applaud the killing and eating of an enemy whereas the conscience of a Christian, of course, would not even allow the thought.
i think one of the effects of the Fall was that the connection between the conscience and the Holy Spirit was severed by Adam's willful sin, and through our Lord's death and resurrection, that connection has been restored among those who have been baptised into His Name. However, if you continually ignore the voice of the Spirit in your conscience, the voice gets weaker and weaker and weaker until it can no longer be heard.
ALL GOOD TO YA FOR LISTENING AND ACTING IN ACCORDANCE WITH GOD'S WILL. MAY THE VOICE OF YOUR CONSCIENCE--THE HOLY SPIRIT--CONTINUE TO GUIDE YOUR CHOICES.

WITH LOVE AND APOLOGIES FOR PERHAPS MUDDYING THE WATERS WITH AN UNNECESSARY EXPLANATION,

it is always so hard to believe that when we give our life to Christ that the Holy Spirit actually comes upon-within us but it does and you have just become a witness to this great gift made possible by Christs Love for us. It is breathtaking to know that a seperate inity is actually dwelling within us who have turned to Christ. PRAISE THE LORD the hair is just standing on end thinking about it. Welcome to the witnessing of the Holy Spirit.

ive had that before....like when im praying, or speaking to god, i get replies, but i used to just think i was simply making it up. sometimes when i used to pray in tongues, i would think that the words i was speaking were made up. im still constantly telling myself it IS god. dont hesitate to belevie its god. if it was something helping you or something good, it was god. "every good gift that you receive comes from my hand"- james 1:17

remember that, gods looking out 4 u. he loves you so much, but that doesnt mean he isnt going to reprimand you or not tell you something is wrong:)

God will never lead you in the wrong direction. Listen to that still small voice. He knows you better than you know yourself.

I know that the times I have not listened to that voice or thought I could do it better MY way were the times that caused me the most grief.

Blessings

as a christian your consciense is the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is God.
The Holy Spirit should take over your conciense, but it is possible to be in rebellion and harden your conscience, thereby grieving the Holy Spirit.

God works with our conscience in perfect harmony, assuming we have not seared our conscience with a hot iron through repeated rebellion against the Most High.

Walk uprightly, love one another as Christ loves you, and you will have nothing to worry about.
