  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I asked this on another site and its got me thinking! Oh NO!

Okay here it is. What makes one Protestant Preachers version of the Truth correct or incorrect over another Protestant Preachers version.

Lets say I go to one Protestant Church and the Preacher teaches me that this is what the word of God is saying, and then the next says this, and so on and I go to 10 different Protestant Preachers and get ten meanings. Who do you feel is right?

And how do you know which one is right?

Are they all preaching on the same scriptures and saying different things?

It was an eye opener for me personally coming out of the Catholic church and finding scripture has so much to say about so many different things I never knew it did.

I just follow the scriptures as i see them, i don't listen to preachers much. I don't listen to the prosperity-name it and claim it doctrine, i don't listen to the Catholic doctrine, nor the Anglican, Lutheran, Pentecostal or Eastern Orthodox. I just read the words of Christ and His apostles and try to fit it into my life. I guess i can understand it at least as much as the next guy can. I like simplicity and i put my faith in scripture, not teachers or denominations, or movements. Is this wrong? Seems good to me.

The key is to do as the Bereans did:

Search the scriptures yourself. Acts 17:10-11

But you'll find that even then you need help.

You need to ask for the Spirit to help you understand for He alone teaches us the complete truth. Luke 24:45, John 16:13, 1 John 2:27

You'll see from Luke 24:45 that even the Apostles needed Jesus to open their minds to the scriptures so they could know them. They had just lived with the man for 3 years and they still didn't know the scriptures accurately. I read that verse as meaning the Apostles still read the scriptures as most other Jews and you can see a hint of that still right before Jesus ascends in Acts 1.

So don't read the scriptures thinking you already know what they say, be open minded with the Spirit guiding you. Be okay with finding out you are wrong. Don't just rely on one preacher you heard and found to be right once or twice, we are all human and able to mess things up.

As Paul told the Thessalonicans, reject the bad and hold fast to the good.

Above all just to repeat, do not buy into anything without the Spirit guiding you. He will never lead you astray.

Have you read it for yourself.

Never take anyone word for what a verse means.

Read and study it for yourself so that you can decide if you can see what they are saying or not.

Check it out yourself.

And how do you know which one is right?

They're both wrong.

The word of God is like a hammer that shatters the rock into pieces.

God uses that example of the hammer shattering the rock to say something powerful to you. What God says is so clear and powerful that you need preachers and their double-talk to convince you that the word of God is not saying what it is clearly saying.
