A passage from 1 John 3 comes to mind with this question:

19 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence
20 whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God

It doesn't depend on what our "hearts" tell us, although it is wonderful when our hearts do indeed manage to grasp the reality of our salvation. But when they don't, we just need to remember that God is greater than our hearts.

Ok, this group of scripture has always confused me. In 19-20, it seems like even though our hearts condemn us, we know we have salvation when we are reborn. BUT!!! Verse 21 seems to contradict that. It's like, "ok, if your heart condemns you, don't worry", then, "if your heart condemns you, you don't have confidence before God". Could someone please clear this up?!? Thanks....

There doesn't seem to be a contradiction here. The verses are talking about different things. If our hearts condemn us, which means we have self-accusation or guilt of some sort, we ourselves would have no confidence in God. BUT, at the same time, be encouraged, that God, being greater than we, will hold us in His hands and take care of us.

I believe that Jesus was without sin, and that he died on a cross for me. I go to church every Sunday and I try to read my Bible when I can.

Every once in awhile I get the feeling that something is missing, that I haven't done enough.

How do you know for sure that you are saved?

StogusMaximus I have been going through exactly the same myself!

Here's three questions.

1. Have you personally called upon Jesus having renounced all your sins, for total forgiveness for all your sins and salvation?
2. Do you trust Jesus and his death upon the cross alone for your salvation?
3. Are you willing with God's help and have you asked the Holy Spirit to help you live a holy life?
4. Finally, is there any deliberate (i.e. not an occaisonal slip up on impulse) & persistant sin in your life that is getting in between you and God? -This doesn't necessarily mean that you have never been saved and if you are saved you cannot lose your salvation because of deliberate sin, though if it is the case you need to give up & eternally forsake that sin(s), and then ask God for forgiveness and the help of his Holy Spirit to keep you from falling into it again.

If you can answer YES to 1,2 & 3 and NO to 4 then YOU ARE DEFINITELY A CHRISTIAN!
There is nothing more to be done- God has completely worked a true conversion in your heart- YOU ARE A GENUINE CHRISTIAN!

okay, for those people out there that are married..or have been in love they can think about it that way. When you're in love you just know it. Its not a "I always feel happy and joyful thing". The point is if you are feeling that way maybe you should spend some time with God. A good question to ask yourself is how is your "quiet time" with God going? Maybe you are feeling uneasy because he has "cut off your source" to remind you that he wants a relationship with you and you have to participate in that. A relationship is two ways, ya know?

You shouldn't ignore such promptings, for they well might come from the Holy Spirit.

How do you know for sure that you are saved?
Jesus's own words tell us how we might gleen our salvation or lack thereof.

Luke 6:
Looking at his disciples, he said:

"Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.

Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.

Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.

Blessed are you when men hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.

"Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.

"But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort.
Woe to you who are well fed now,
for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
Woe to you when all men speak well of you,
for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.

"...and if you are saved you cannot lose your salvation because of deliberate sin..."

I struggle with this a lot...if someone would like to elaborate I'd appreciate it. I don't mean to hijack this thread. I don't think I'm deliberately sinning...I think I just get decieved and slip up...but I don't know.

One passage (that probably has something to do with the above) that I really like is this one:

Romans 8:38-39, NLT

"And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can't, and life can't. The angels can't, and the demons can't. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can't keep God's love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Sure. The sin we have was taken on by Christ when you gave your life to him. Sin, to make an analogy, needs something to hook onto to breath..christ has no sin for it to hook on to so it "died". Sin no longer has the same consequences for christians. It lacks the power to kill us. We sin and we are refusing God's sanctification, but we no longer need to fear the death that comes with sin, for Christ took our sin and died for us. I personally think we are sinning because we choose to.Why? Its our old life that is dead and gone..kinda like if you poor and suddenly you're rich, its hard to not live counting every penny all of a sudden. Get the idea?

Excellent analogy Louis....

I think that sometimes we forget that when Christ comes into our life and regenerates us, that we receive the ability to exhibit the Beatitudes. If you're truly a Christian, strive to exhibit what you've been given! That's what being a Christian is all about, shining the light so that God may be glorified.

Personally, I feel horrible when I don't do what God has given me the ability to do. We should do what we can, because if we don't, those opportunities will pass us by, and we'll end up feeling miserable afterwards. Thank God for sanctification. It takes a lifetime, but God completes the work He starts inside of us.

I know what you mean when you say that something's missing. I feel that way, too, right now as a matter of fact. I don't think it means that anything is amiss with my salvation; I'm thinking that there's something else that I've missed. I've been praying, however, and I know that God will provide me with the wisdom and knowledge that I need. Knowing that doesn't exactly make the waiting fun, but His timing is perfect! :)

>>we no longer need to fear the death that comes with sin,

IF we overcome sin, then we will overcome death at the same time. In the latter rain, there will be so much of the power of God that people will be able to live free from sin. Jesus will then have to come for His bride because death will not be able to take her. She will be out preaching and teaching and taking the gospel to the ends of the earth. When the last person has been witnessed to then Jesus will be coming for His Bride.

Those who do not overcome sin, will have to die a natural death in order to go to Heaven. If they do not get the victory over sin, before Jesus returns, then their only option to go to heaven will be to be martyered during the tribulation period.

We know that Enoch and Elijah did not die, but were translated to Heaven. There could have been others, that we are not told about. Elijah is a type of Christ, Enoch is a type of the Bride. Thanks, JohnR7

Didn't have time to read thru all the pages of postings but just to add what I believe.

Yes, it takes faith to believe what the Bible promises - salvation for those who believe.
But beyond that I also want to say that there shld be the inward witness. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the sons of God.

A believer should just know that he knows that he knows he's saved. You know it from your gut. It's not just becos someone told u so.

peace

I believe that Jesus was without sin, and that he died on a cross for me. I go to church every Sunday and I try to read my Bible when I can.

Every once in awhile I get the feeling that something is missing, that I haven't done enough.

How do you know for sure that you are saved?

Rather than try to figure it out, ask God to show you what's missing. He will do that. But seek Him earnestly. If I were in that bind, I'd be getting up an hour early every morning just to seek His face on this issue, day after day, week after week, month after month, until I got a clear answer. It will come, but only if you seek with sincerity and persistence.

By this it is made clear who take
their nature from God and are His
children and who take their nature
from the devil and are his children:
no one who does not practice right-
eousness[who does not conform to
God's will in purpose, thought, and
action] is of God; neither is anyone
who does not love his brother (his
fellow beleiver in Christ)
We know that we have passed
over out of death into Life by the
fact we love the breathen (our
fellow Christians).1 John3;10,14
