Proverbs 16.9
A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.

~Jim

It has taken me all my life to understand that I don’t have to understand everything.

I am assuming that this means the unregenerate heart of man, that makes his plans without seeking God. But God is bigger, and only God will decide if his path is fruitful, and if not, He will direct his steps wheather it is to succeed or not.

Hi Jim,

Wow, good old (human) man, we are really a reasonable sort of a character?

But, that all depends on which way he wants to walk. We make our own choices and decisions, and we do believe that we make them by the direction of our Lord Jesus Christ in accordance to His Word. Is that correct?

When we make them, we believe that we are glorifying His Kingdom and we give HIM all the glory. And if that is so, then HE will direct our steps.

But, what happens if we are just poddling along? Yep, HE then sends the Holy Spiriti to convict us, so as we will re-direct our own steps, coming back onto that narrow path that we all navigate like a drunkard.

But, that shouldn't be so, if we believe that we trust HIM (Psalm 118:8) and that HE directs our way (1 Thess. 3:11)

Be blessed in Jesus' Name.

Proverbs 16:9 We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.

Proverbs 20:24 A man's steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand his own way?

Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.

Jeremiah 10:23 I know, O LORD, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps.

All of the Old Testament verses are summarized by Paul in Romans 8:28-29 "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them."

One of the greatest and most essential attributes of God is His sovereignty; God rules over all things and controls all things. 'Providence" means God’s faithful, moment-by-moment control over everything He has made to ensure that everything He has created are going according to His will. He is active in every detail of it. He’s active at every moment. He doesn’t stand back and let things happen because He decides to intervene if something or someone is not going according to His will. He governs the world moment-by-moment through providence, so that everything that happens, every detail of our life occurs by God's divine providence or by God’s express permission. He is in control of everything. Even the bad things that happen to us are circumscribed by a loving providence and God promises to use them all for our ultimate good. There is a verse in the Bible that God promises that there won’t be anything so bad happen to us that we’re not able to bear it. God does everything--He governs everything.” God doesn’t just sit back and wait until He wants to act and then do it through a miracle.” God constantly intervenes in our lives through providence.

It has taken me all my life to understand that I don’t have to understand everything.

By reading it in context, and comparing it with what I know, have read and what I believe. In some cases, it might challenge what I believe and my perception. Either way, I'll sek to grow. In other words, I'll study it just like any other piece of scripture I might come across.

To me, this scripture brings great comfort and great challenge in that it reminds me to trust the Lord with my life, and that his plan for my life is truly something special. And that in itself is an awesome thing to look forward to!

So tell us, Jim, how does this scripture speak to you?

God gives us the desires of our hearts, He puts His desires in our heats and we make them ours. Same way with us making His will our will.

So, a man can plan, but He directs us and leads us. He shows us the way to accomplish His purpose.
And even if we think we know His plans, He will cause His purpose to be done in spite of us.

Psalm 37:
23: The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.
24: Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: For the Lord upholds him with His hand.
25: I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken nor his descendants begging bread.
26: He is ever merciful and lends; and his descendants are blessed.
27: Depart from evil and do good; and dwell forevermore.
28: For the Lord loves justice, and does not forsake HIs ssaints; they are preserved forever. But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.
29: The righteous shall inhereit the land, and dwill in it forever.
30: The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom. And his tongue talks of justice.
31: The law of his God is in his heart. None of his steps shall slide.

There are many things I wanted to do and planned to be during many stages of my life.

But here I am, doing something I never planned, living somewhere I never dreamed, but I'm right where God wants me to be.

The message has an interesting take on it.

Hi A,

I’m sorry if I appear to be nitpicking, but this is what the most commonly used Bibles say on Proverbs 16:9

NKJV:
A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.

NIV:
In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

ESV:
The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.

AMP:
A man's mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps and makes them sure.

CEV:
We make our own plans, but the LORD decides where we will go.

But, “The Message” says this:
We plan the way we want to live, but only God makes us able to live it.

The only Bible out of step with God’s Word is The Message, which is the most watered-down, distorted, and misrepresented version of God’s Inspired Word.

The commonly used versions referring to this verse say, “PLANS”, and there is a big difference between “PLANS” and “WANT”??

Also, there isn’t that much difference between the words “DIRECT, DETERMINES, ESTABLISHES, DECIDES” used in the most commonly used Bibles.

But, The Message has changed, distorted and misrepresented His Word and says that our Lord Jesus Christ “MAKES US”. That is not true and not the correct context of this verse, because we have our own will, and HE doesn’t MAKE US do anything, nor does HE MAKES US ABLE!!

Our STEPS, isn’t LIFE, but are our actions, our attitudes, our choices, our decisions that we make in our walk with HIM.

Why would any Christian quote from one of the most watered-down, distorted, misrepresentation of God’s Inspired Word?

When we read Matt 6:7-13 in The Message, this is what it says:

“The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant (judgemental and accusing, are prayer warriors HEATHENS?). They're full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God (again judgemental and accusing). Don't fall for that nonsense (what nonsense?). This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:

Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what's best— as above, so below (new age term, not Biblical!).
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
(SAFE isn’t DELIVER!)
You're in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You're ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.”

Now this is what His Inspired Word says through the NKJV:

“And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. (Note: The Message uses four lines of false information that is accusing and condemning about something that His Word is not saying in one and half lines!)
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

Any similarity between what is being said in The Message and what is being said in the NKJV is purely coincidental, which is extremely common throughout The Message, which is a new age gospel and personal interpretation made by the author thinking he can do a better job than God’s Inspired Writers.

Once again A, I am sorry if I appear to be nit-picking, but to use The Message isn’t cricket!

Be blessed in Jesus' Name.

If this forum is any indication, some do not read the Bible correctly. First you have to understand it before you can believe or obey it.

In fact, in this thread we already have different interpretations of the verse in question. What is yours?
