• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you handle it when something happens that reminds you of the past? My abusive ex's brother goes to school at the same college I do. It is move out weekend. I didn't even see him... but I saw his truck. I've been trying to block it all out of my mind by drowning my thoughts in my favorite TV show... but I just wish it'd stop haunting me...

I completly understand how you feel and what your saying.. I am very sorry its hard to deal with things that remind you of your past.. I have a hard time when I see trucks with a shell on them, but yet I drove a pick up truck but its not the same size as my abuser drove so dont ask me how I did that.. But for me I try and knock it out but I often do not realize that my emotions are an all time high when I am triggered, I just do what you do is block it out.. Not so easy to do.. Again I am so sorry that your having to deal with it.. Its hard to walk away from some thing when you feel its chasing you down the street, and you wish to God you can let it go but cant.. Email me any time..

It will take time, but I promise that after a while, it won't trigger the memories as much. It is still not easy though.

Drowning it out with a TV show or other favourite activity is a good way to deal with it. I have also found that actually confronting the feelings and talking to a friend, or even just writing down what I am feeling and thinking has helped. It might not seem like such a great thing now having to relive it all, but usually I feel better after I have actually got the thoughts out. :)

I am always here if you want to talk Hun *hug*

Blessings,
Katie

Honestly. I don't handle triggers very well. They tend to destroy me for a few days, but ways I try to handle them. Is music, poetry, reminding myself of the facts and also texting a mate who lets me vent all the fears and feelings and reminds me of who I am not who I think I am.

I find writing helps.... even if I just burn it afterwards... just getting it out, and then giving it to God.
I went away this weekend with a ladies group from church... and have been in tears ever since.. it was like being back at boarding school... and it brought back so many memories.
But... there are only a finite number of memories, and as they surface... it hurts, but, we can give them to God.. and i believe that He will take them, and cover them with His blood, His love, and they are gone.
And if we keep going, bringing each one to Him, one day, they will all be gone!

It hurts, tho, sweetie, I know.
Praying for you.

Just know that satan is the one bringing these memories up. He's trying to drag you down. It hurts, i know, but it will get better (im sure you hear that all the time and it hard to believe, but i PROMISE you, it DOES get better.).

People say, time is healing, but time can be constant pain also. It depends on how we use our time. If we dont want to do what it takes to heal, then it doesnt matter how much time we allow, true healing wont happen. Only when we get to the point where we'll do what it takes to heal, will time bring healing. And dont get me wrong, it'll still hurt. Im not sure if the pain ever truely "goes away forever" but it will get easier. (I have NO idea where any of that came from! Its not at all what i had in mind when i started this post. But maybe it helped someone.)

I am praying for you, and know that alot of other people are too.

As my signature says:

So stand in the rain
Stand your ground
Stand up when it's all crashing down
You stand through the pain
You won't drown
And one day, whats lost can be found
You stand in the rain

It's hard but all we can do is try to forgive them. Also, you might want to seek counseling if you're not in counseling already. It would help you to get over the abuse you suffered.
