• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you handle anxiety/depression as a believer?

I have had struggles too and what I have learned is: lean on God, don't beat yourself up too bad (rely on His grace), pray and find good friends who are believers. Let the Lord do the work and just rely on Him. I also believe if people are honest they will admit there are days when none of us want to read our Bibles. Just start with trusting God. Im so glad you have become a believer! :)

What Rebecca said. I brought PTSD home with me from the military and thought I was home free until the night of Desert Storm. then it came roaring back. Waking up on the floor panicked wondering where my rifle was. Not good.

These days I accept that bad things can make bad memories. I give them to Jesus and accept what He allows me to feel. I think they help to make me who I am now.

I have found that I have had to be able to tell the difference between my normal mind/self and my uber emotional mind/self. Some of our feelings are heightened due to stress, hormones, medication and a bunch of other factors.

I have been training myself to look for emotional thoughts and evaluate them quickly. If they are not in line with my normal way of thinking I give them to God. Then they are gone. If I think about it again, I give it to God again, and again and again.

Our thoughts control us, but we don't have to listen or do what we feel. We are children of God. We have the Holy Spirit living inside of us.

Put those thoughts behind you. I guarantee you will feel better.

Pray for yourself. Get on your knees and just wail in His presence. Tell Him you need Him and His help. We need to ask God for what we need. He is our dearest friend.

I've struggled with it all my life and now as a believer more so because I know the enemy uses it against me. When it happens I don't want to even look at my Bible. How do you cope?
Coping was a long process for me. Best advice from my life experience I can give you is do not fear the devil. I once heard the devil laugh at me while I was in a psyche ward. It scared me then but if it happened again I would just laugh at his feeble attempt to sway my faith.[I think atleast, in the moment it's extremely terrifying] I believe your beginning to have what I personally call a relationship with god. Trust in him and things will begin to make sense.
They probable already are my turning point was when I started to believe the out of the box non-traditional thoughts I was having, remember culture and the figures in society are the product of both good and evil.

my best way of coping is listening to Christian music.
in case you would like to try some of my techniques, here they are.
Listen to whole Christian albums starting from track 1 till the end, they have messages, embrace them and they will comfort you.
albums I like starting with my favorite:
Inland by Jars of Clay
Welcome to the New by MercyMe
The Hurt and the Healer by MercyMe

song I think will touch you prison in my head by the Rep[it touches me more than any song atm]

I keep telling myself that Jesus said "be anxious for nothing". I walk with
God, and don't need to fear anything.

I'm a person who grew up with terrible anxiety, worry and fear. My family
were/and still are at times high strung people. I have an Aunt who seems to worry about anything and everything. Her and her husband also watch too much news, so I'm sure that contributed to her fears.

Been on prozac and Klonopin or clonazepam here in Canada, for over
22 years. Would rather be off of it, but the withdrawl effects would make
it exceedingly difficult. A hellacious task for sure.

Try to find what your triggers are, finding what triggers your anxiety can be of great help,

it can be talking about a particular subjects, been around a certain people ect

I personally struggle in certain social situations and talking about certain subjects, I think learning what your triggers are can help you greatly deal with your problems, don't know if you are from England, if you are there is an organization called Mind, they run courses that help people deal with stress by looking for your triggers ect can be a great help, I recommend it.

Praying is obviously a great help, I will pray for you and I ask if you will also pray for me.

God bless

Thanks for the info, IhavefoundGod!:)

I'm in Canada, and not in the U.K. Never heard of MIND, but it does sound interesting. Perhaps North America will have mind courses available one day?

God bless you as well! And I will pray for you too!

That's a shame, there are alot of self help books available, which can be of great help, I bet if you Google search, you would be able to find Some self help Ebooks to download for free.

Try the NHS mental health website too, they have great information available.

I will pray for you.

I am new here and just read your reply post. It is what I needed to remember. I am hoping my faith grows to the full measure that God gave me. I suffer from PTSD from 11 years of abuse. The only guys that I seem to attract are abusive and controlling. It has been so hard to connect with others who appear to be healthy mentally and spiritually. Been looking. I hate to talk about myself. Not many really wants to know about a person if it's not good background.

This is beautiful. Just like others who are suffering from other illness, we have to deal with our minds. When things get tough, take a pause, remind yourself and seek support. After all, its all about the process in life. The disease is not your life. its just part of you.

Praying for you. :)
