  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Ok, I know that most everyone has this one thing that they are pretty close to being obsessed with and that they probably could answer just about any question asked about said subject or at the very least they know way more than the average person about the subject.

My geek subject would be nutrition. I'm pretty sure I'm not an expert but I do know quite a bit and I love reading books about it, looking up new things about it on the web, reading magazine articles... I also seem to find lots of ways to add it into conversions.

My husband's area of expertise would be cars. And even my son has his own area. He's most definitely way more knowledgeable about Transformers (and I mean the toys put out by Hasbro or Takara Tomy) than anyone ever should be.

So back to the title of the board. How do you get your geek on?

My areas of Geek Interest :D

Nature: I could watch nature shows endlessly, I cannot get enough of them. I've been an animal/nature geek all my life.

History: I hated history like most kids while I was in school. It's a tragedy how few teachers ever try to make history interesting and relevant to students. I don't remember when or how I started enjoying history, but now I can watch documentaries constantly and I just eat it up and find it absolutely fascinating.

Theater: Fell into theater eight years ago. Always enjoyed plays and musicals, but becoming a performer lit a serious fire in me :)

Music: Was classically trained in piano as a kid, and have enjoyed several years in a local choral group. Enjoying music is one thing, but understanding how it's composed and designed gives you an incredible appreciation for it.

Lord Of The Rings: Umm, yeah... it's almost sacred to me lol.

Thanks so much guys. My reason for asking this is because my poor daughter feels left out. My son and I were talking about his Transformers obsession the other day for several hours. Later my daughter came to me and told me that it makes her feel bad because the rest of us have something that we are interested in and can always talk about but she doesn't have anything and she wants to find something to interest her and occupy her time with. I've thrown out a few ideas but none of them seemed appealing to her so I thought maybe if I could get others' interests that she might like one of those.

It's interesting that you brought it up because I have been thinking about what I will do once I finish up gaming. There are some skills I want to develop or learn but I don't see them as long term interests (dancing, singing, learning an instrument), I used to play dungeons and dragons but that is too remote, I could become a collector but that doesn't interest me either.
So for me I'm facing a similar situation but I think the answer could be found by exposing myself to lots of different things and see if they catch my fancy.

I bet there's something she enjoys that she just may not be thinking of in a "geek" sort of way. You don't have to be amazingly good at something, or extremely knowledgeable about it... you just have to love it and enjoy it. Especially if she's still young, the skills and knowledge can come later :) I bet, if she stops and really thinks about it, she can think of some things she really does love.

When it comes to finding a hobby that really makes you passionate it can be a case of trying out a number rather than trying to find something that sounds interesting. I get geeky about showing animals, i'm far too geeky when it comes to running around the garden hunting creepy crawlies and my ultimate geek on experience comes with putting the lab coat on and entering the dirty lab. As boring as it can be there is something delightful about sitting down and playing with various pieces of expensive equipment.

Well, I don't know if I'm a geek at these things but I really enjoy them and they have become my hobbies.

The bible. I have been trying to memorize many passages of it for years :D

Edible wild plants and mushrooms. I enjoy studying about what is edible in the wild and I know the names of many wild plants and mushrooms.

Wildlife. I love studying about the different creatures in the wild and I think I know a lot about them.

Nutrition. I have always enjoyed studying nutrition.

Fairytales. :sorry:

But seriously. I own a number of volumes of collected folklore from various countries, in addition to collecting world mythology, Christian (and Islamic to a certain extent) hagiography, Christian/Jewish pseudepigrapha. To supplement this, I also own a growing collection of resources including a couple bestiaries, a few books on symbolism, books tracing the folklore and mythology surrounding trees and forests, labyrinths, stars, angels, and Christmas.

I concede I also have a great fascination with Dante Alighieri, as certain things on my profile bear witness. I absolutely adore his Divina Commedia; I read Longfellow's translation a few years ago, and have been itching to read it again. :)

I am also fairly enthusiastic about literature in general, and specifically, English literature. :)

*drools* I would love to raid your collection. :D

Harry Potter and Star Wars are two of my biggest "geek" interests. I know probably everything and anything about them and have even decorated my house themed after the two. Lord of the Rings is a close second but seeing has how I don't own the movies anymore I haven't watched them in forever. When I get the new blurays I'll be back to normal. :D

Tinkerbell is another thing I LOVE. I collect a lot of Tinkerbell stuff.

I'm also big into the NFL, especially the Dallas Cowboys. I looooove football. Love to watch it, love to be there, love to see my kids (well, my son) play, love to play a good game...I just love football. I really need to start reading more about random trivia but for right now I just watch the games and listen to the boys talk about it. :p

And now I have seriously ruined all chances of finding a husband...LOL :D

Plants - especially clematis and growing heirloom tomatoes. I've been trying to cross-breed my clems to see what kind of new hybrids I can create. I am completely obsessed with them and my lifetime dream would be to have enough of them to be considered a clematis show garden. I have 23 varieties so far, so I have a long way to go but it's a good start!

I love history too and old buildings and roaming around old cemeteries. I especially love old churches, like the beautiful gothic style churches in Europe and the old country churches here at home. There's just something about them that grabs me and I like to go out and photograph them.

I love art, although I haven't been doing any drawing lately, I could spend hours roaming around a museum and being around old paintings literally makes me cry. So much beauty in one place overwhelms me.

Other than that I'm just geeky about trying new things - I'm ALWAYS taking on a new project, trying to figure out how to do this or that, taking classes, etc. I just have a passion for learning!

Yesss … I love Transformers. G1 mostly, but I love the Generations line too.

Other things:

• GI Joe

• Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
• "Classic" Simpsons (meaning seasons 1 through about 8 or so)
• Old advertisements and commercials.
