I have been going to a junior college for two years now and am going to be graduateing with my AA. Problem is I don't know what I want to do or should do next.

Of course I will be going to a university next semester, my parents never finished college so i have to it seems. I would like to get an English degree, since writing is what I mainly do. Problem is it seems like everyone is telling me that if thats what I do I will spend the next ten years saying "do you want fries with that?" Which is not what I want to do, I want a career.

Everyone says a degree in science or math - - is what I should get. Science is okay, except for the math part. And as soon as I am done with this semester of college algebra I refuse to take another math class again. Ever.

Should you do what you are truly interested in? What might get you a better job? or should you find some unhappy medium?

How did some of you make your decisions?

You should do something you enjoy. Math and Science are lucritive careers but if you hate Math you would be very unhappy in that field. There are many jobs and careers available with an English degree. Look into it and pray about it and find out what sparks your interest.

What sparks my interest is traveling around the world to places like Russia, Egypt, the Middle East, China... directing movies, being a journalist for National Geographic...

None of which are very realistic goals, though that doesn't mean I won't shoot for them, just that I need something to fall back on.

I really hate trying to be sensible.

do the will of God and ask it through prayers...

Sometimes it is hard to know the will of God for me anyway. Sometimes I think He wants me to make up my mind myself and take a leap of faith, and trust in Him to catch me.

Well I think I will enroll in English for the next school year. In fact I will do that right now! (you can do it over the Internet)

What I will do next...? who knows?

It wasn't till i was 24 that i realized what God wanted me to pursue in college. I believe that i just wasnt ready to pursue a career till then... i had other things in my life to work on. But when it came, it came as God's voice telling me what to do.

Something i'm almost done reading is "The Purpose-Driven Life" by Rick Warren. Its a very good book and i believe it will help you.

But in a sentance, the book tells you that you can realize your purpose by looking at your Spiritual gifts (what gifts did God give you to help the body of Christ?), Heart (what do you love doing?), Abilities (what are you good at?), Personality (what kind of person are you?), and Experiences (what difficulties have you over come that you can help others overcome? How have your experiences shaped your life?).

As a Christian, you should be pursuing the Kingdom of Christ and storing up riches up there, not here on earth. I wouldn't say to go for the job that makes you a lot of money or the job that makes you happy... rather go for the job that God wants you to go for... because this job will be something that you will be content with as well as make enough money for the life you need to live.

I pray you will hear God's voice and know where to go next.

I should have followed my heart when I wanted to go for psychology, but the greedy side of me went for business studies. I was depressed and miserable for the entire semester. Now that I'm in psychology, I'm much more happier. Not certain about the future, but I'm content.

God gave you your personality, your mind, your likes and dislikes. He made you unique. He didn't make mistakes.

If you enjoy English and you enjoy travelling -- go for it! Like you mentioned, trust in Him to catch you -- He will catch you!

I majored in Linguistics, and I'm currently teaching English (as a Second Language) in Seoul, Korea. God has provided for me every step of the way.

No matter what you major in, you may use it for a bit in life, or perhaps God will completely turn your life around and show you something completely new down the road.

So don't worry! You can do all of those dreams you have in life. Start directing movies now! Write a script, grab some actors, a video camera, and find someone you know with cheap editing software. INSTAMOVIE! If you want to travel around the world, you can perhaps look into working at a mission orginization office overseas! Tons of awesome adventures await you no matter what dive on in!

Oh, and P.S., you can always be a writer. Writers write because that is what they need to do. That is their lifeline, their breathing. The difference between a writer and a non-writer is this alone: writers write. period. Pretty simple. And if writing is what gives you creative life, do it no matter what!

In case anyone was wondering - which I doubt - I thought I'd catch you up. I have applied and been accepted at NAU and will graduate August 2005 with my BA in Creative Writing English. That fall I will start teaching an English 101 class as work towards my masters. As soon as I turn 18 in a week or so, I will enter a couple of my screenplays in some contests.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions!

You mentioned wanting to become a journalist - English would be a good stepping stone towards that. As far as there being good jobs in sciences - a degree in chemistry or math isn't much better than a degree in english or history. Applied sciences are where it's at (eg - engineering) If you think English is right for you, then go with English.
