• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have listened to heavy metal music for a number of years and i know that when i do, it makes me depressed, tense and generally negative feeling. Even listening to Christian metal is pretty much the same.
Lately i have been listening to some non-metal music on youtube like David Bowie, Talking Heads and Mumford And Sons. I feel much more relaxed and positive when i am listening to these artists.
My problem is i am finding it hard to get rid of my metal cd's. I would like to be able to sell them and buy some David Bowie cd's from the proceeds. Am i being dumb here?

I think you are doing the right thing by replacing the heavy metal with other music that makes you feel better. It is a good idea to sell the HM and get some music that is comforting. Praying for you.

If you found a bag of drugs would you sell them and keep the cash, I had huge collection of satanic music, burned it all, when you really decide to deny yourself and follow Christ, its a very freeing feeling and you won't look back and wish you kept them

"Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful" (Psalm 147:1 NKJV)

there are actually scientific studies that show both lyrics and the hymnological aspects of what we listen to have an affect on how we feel. heavy metal does not use peaceful melodies, therefore, it is normal that you may not feel peace when listening to it.

as far as christian heavy metal, imagine if you were yelling and screaming at your wife/kids/parents/friends/siblings etc proclaiming love for them! the words are being said but the presentation spoils good intentions.

I encourage you to find a form of music that reflects the peace that was granted to us by the Lord. both lyrically and musically. it is not foolish at all to want to get rid of the heavy metal

Lifelong metal-head here. I generally steer clear of "extreme metal" and any bands who propagate Satanic beliefs in their music/lyrics. My current favorite rock/metal band (Killing Joke) plays aggressive music but with positive political and social lyrics. I commend the OP for his honest self-evaluation. We all should do more of that.

It would be better to do that than to keep and do the drugs

However the sale of cds is not ilegal nor is heavy metal necessarily "Satanic" music.

Purge 187 makes a good point about lyrics. It's not the beat that matters, but ANYTHING that makes you sad or brings you down, I don't care if it's Christian Bluegrass-toss it. Most Pawn shops will give you some small amt for the CD's or DVD's, otherwise so will flea markets or trade em (place a free ad-college campuses or maybe the local newspspers) for something you do like.

Music is mean to uplift the spirits and is a matter of personal preference. What Brown Sugar meant to Keith Richards is nowhere near what it means to me, see what I'm saying? Precious Memories can be a Sad song or a Happy one depending on your perspective. Music is meant to be the language of emotion-keep it positive and rock on.

I think music plays a pivotal role, but i think it not the genre of music but the lyrics in music. I listen to Avenged Sevenfold( which has biblical meanings to there music), Thousand Foot Krutch, Fly Leaf, Skillet and More. I think you can get alot out of there music, but as for the heavier stuff like Marilyn mason, etc i think they are in away to much promoting hatred and stuff like that even if it is for entertainment purposes only, and the sad thing is to is that kids let it go to there heads and bad things seem to happen.

Although i got rid of my heavy metal cd's and deleted my heavy metal albums on itunes, i recently clicked on a heavy metal video on youtube and listened to it. I'm really annoyed with myself. Does anyone know of a website about dealing with the addiction to heavy metal music?

Congrats on getting rid of all your heavy metal cds etc. I think you honoured the Lord by doing this. I do not know of a website that deals with the addiction to heavy metal music, but I will be praying for you.

On my soap box

before I ever listened to metal I thought it was evil and wrong blah blah blah. But then I listened to Thrash metal and it was like something clicked in my head, it was the kind of thing I wanted in music all my life and I didnt even know it. Ya, most of the lyrics are total garbage, I know that. But isnt listening to David Bowie just as bad? (isnt he all about gay rights or something). The lyrics to metal may be bad, but at least the music isnt garbage too. One type of music I cannot stand is contemporary Christin, its so boring and dry, its one reason I cant find a good church, all they ever wanna do is play crap music and they skimp on the sermons because the music brings people in. Also, like everything else in this world music is an expression of free will that God in his soverignity gave us, God likes for us to be creative and lets be honest here, if all of us listened to the same music there would be no creativity, and no diversity. The lyrics may be from satan, that is regrettable, but the talent....thats from God. God delights in his creation.

So before you go sell your entire music collection on a whim that it makes you "holy," got news for you....it doesnt. Nothing outside the grace of God will ever make any one holy. As long as you understand that the lyrics are wrong and you seriously put stock in them, whats wrong with it if you like it?

Off my soap box....

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

What century do you guys live in? If you say metal is "the devil's music", you mean that 'God Has All Glory' by HB has a satanic message? I find it deeply worrying that some people still have these views. Please tell me where in the Bible it says "You must not listen to metal"? I pray that God will open your eyes, for you are blinded by rules made up by the ignorance of humans, not God.
