• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi. I must have tried to quit @ 30 times before I finally did it sucessfully. I'm not sure what will work for you, but I pray that God will strengthen you and help you. Since your faith icon says you are a Baptist, I hope you don't mind if I mention a scripture that helped me.

I needed something a little "tough" to help me quit.

1 Cor 3:16-17
16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

If that scripture doesn't help, then find another that will. The word of God is living and powerful... When I memorize and meditate on a certain scripture or two, they really do give me the power to resist temptation.

I hope and pray you have good success.

Perhaps you just need a small victory before a large battle. The next time you want to light up put down the lighter and say in 15 minutes I will do it. OR just stop during one activity like not while driving to work.

Hang out w/non smokers or make plans to go somewhere you will not smoke (like Church) on a regular basis.

Then see if you can work your way up a little at a time.

BUT EVERYBODY I TALK TO SAYS COLD TURKEY IS BEST...I have tried it all, and little wins helped me handle the mental part, I'm a newbie, on my second quit so far on my second week...

Greetings all.
I just thought I'll add my story to this thread. I am now 24 and have been smoking since I was 18 (which is quite late to start I guess). Like all smokers, I've quit a million times ;) Once I did really well though...I set my mind to it and went without for 2 whole months. Then I joined some friends for a drink one night, and I just had a drag, which lead to 2, which lead to "Just 1 cigarette...".
The next day I was back where i started. My advice to everyone? DON'T TOUCH THE THINGS ONCE YOU STOP. STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!
My uncle quit recently after something like 20 or so years. He said it was a change of mind-set. He hasn't touched one for 6 or 8 months.
I'm going to try again soon...but need to get my mind in gear first.

I wish you all luck!
Hopefully God ties a big elastic band around my wrist and snaps it everytime I get the urge :amen:

Quitting is best done the way you feel comfortable with. It may not work the same way for you as others but first of all you need to find out when, where, why you smoke and try to avoid these occasions. It took me a long time to figure out how to do it for me and even then I still get cravings. This time I am over 3 months without. I had to change my whole lifestyle to get this way but thats what it took. Praying that you will find your way to smoke free.

Yes,I know. Life without our addictions is a frightening thing. We love them.We hate what they do to us, but we love our addictions. That is where the power of addiction comes from. Our love of them, keeps them with us.Go to the old folks home and look at them. Many have an air hose they wear so they can breath. They can't walk far without taking a breather.Their addiction has consumed them.We can't give any bad thing up until we really Know it for what it is.

Hi,
I am new here. I dont usually post. BUT, I was and still am so surprised that after reading all the advice to help you stop smoking. Not one gave the advice to ask God. I read everything from "cutting down" to using chewing tabacco?? Most of us are incapable of quitting on our own and only when we admit we are powerless over this addiction and cry out to God for help will we ever be able to do it. I found a super website with information for christians trying to stop smoking. PLEASE check it out. I am new so I can write the link in correct format.

The page is actually a short bible study on what the bible says about smoking and how satan uses our addictions against us.How to triumph over this addiction with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ
Your sister in christ,
Heather

This is what I did. As I smoked my last cigarette, I stared at the half pack I had left. I remember thinking to myself how badly my grandfather wanted me to quit. I tossed the rest of the pack and haven't touched a cigarette since. It has been almost a year. I have done quite a few things in my life that I know he would never have wanted to find out. Now that he is gone, I know he knows all about the bad things I have done. I thought maybe I could do something right for once in my life and quit.

Being scared is the addiction lying to you. Feel the fear and do it anyway. God will give you the strength. Do not look at quitting as depriving you of anything. You are loosing nothing by giving up smoking. Instead look at it as giving yourself a gift. The gift of health, money, time, smelling good, freedom, etc. etc.

Do not be a slave to addiction any longer. Break free. You can do it.

Can you remember the days before you started smoking? What was so scary about being smoke free back then? Nothing... in fact I'm willing to bet you were happier with yourself. There is nothing to be scared of when quitting. Only good things will happen being smoke free. :)

First off, I guess I should say that at this exact moment in time, I'm not even trying to quit. There is so much stress going on right now (hubby got laid off from his job) that I don't think I can deal with trying to quit smoking as well.

I started smoking when I was 20. You'd think at that age I'd know better. But when I went off to college, there were alot of people I hung around with who did and I started. Anywho, I've quit twice. I have two children and while I was pregnant both times I quit only to start back pretty much as soon as I delivered.

Before my first pregnancy, I smoked a pack and a half a day. After my daughter was born I got back up to a half a pack and then I got pregnant again. After my son was born I got up to about 3/4 of a pack of the full flavored variety. This went on for about 3 1/2 years and then one day I saw my daughter with a straw pretending to smoke. It was then that I decided that I really needed to quit. I used the gum with some success and dropped down to just a few cigarettes a day. Then I dropped those down from the full flavored variety to Ultra lights. This seemed to be working and I even went a few days here and there with out smoking at all.

Then about 2 months ago hubby started having trouble with his job. I haven't gone back to the full flavored and I'm only smoking a half a pack of ultra lights. It seems that with as little nicotine as I'm actually getting from these, that I should be able to just put them down. I've even tried chewing the gum again to get rid of these last few cigarettes but even the lowest mg makes me sick because of the amount of nicotine.

So I guess that as soon as hubby starts work again, I'm going to just go cold turkey from these last cigarettes and pray to God that He will keep them from me for the rest of my life.

I'm taking this number by number for you.

1 - Smoking is not only bad for your health, but those around you. Second hand smoke is just as dangerous (if not more so) than first hand. Are you always responsible with disposing your cigarettes? If not, animals could be getting at it, not to mention those poisons would be seeping into the earth, which we are stewards over. You can't recycle those, I'm afraid. Does your God-given life mean so little that you'd trivialize it every few hours by having another cigarette?

2 - You've probably heard it over and over again but figure up how much money you spend on cigarettes. No, you probably already know how much that is, don't you? Now, I want you to think about what that money could do as an offering to the Lord. Given to a charity, your church, what else could that money do than suffocate you? All of your possessions belong to him, why waste them on what can kill you? If you are in financial trouble, why are you still smoking, wasting money like that? Maybe this is really the time you need to quit smoking! God is not only the God of the Vine, but the God of the Worm and the Blistering Sun! (Jonah 4) He isn't shy to send us a wake up call when we need one!

3 - Your family is worried for good reason. It's because they love you and want to keep you around on this earth for a while longer. Do you smoke around them? If you leave them to go smoke, they miss you. If you stay where you are to go smoke... they still miss the nicer smelling you. You do not need to smoke to enjoy the end of a meal, you do not need to smoke to make social occasions more enjoyable.

4 - Properly used, tobacco is a great pesticide... Think on that for a moment. We are supposed to do our best not to offend others to help bring them to the Truth and the Light. How can you witness to those who need it the most with tar breath?

Withdrawal pangs can NOT be worse than dying on a cross.

Most smokers do not wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat to have a cigarette. The addiction is mostly in your mind, perpetuated by this world where the nicotine business runs - big cigarette companies, nicorette, nicoderm, scare campaigns (what do smokers do when they get nervous? That's right - smoke!), movies, television, our idol worship... But honestly, it comes down to a decision.

Will I lean on God or my own flawed understanding?

You have something bigger than you to lean on, price has been paid, and all the comfort you need is right there when you ask for it. You can do all things through Christ - you can have the most wonderful life or nothing at all.

Write up a few scripture verses on a cigarette sized scroll and stick them in your pack, or outside of your pack. With all things, go prayerfully forward. Grab more quiet time with Him, read His Word. There is not a single person alive that spends enough time with him. Meditate on him. If you need scripture verses, I'd be more than happy to pull a couple of dozen for you.
