This means you let the holy spirit take control of your life quite a scary thought but it's true. You'll end up places you'd never dream of going if you trust God what he is doing.

Pray. I'll bet you will get a lot of different answers. Jesus said that John the Baptist baptized with water, and that He (Jesus) would baptize with the Holy Spirit. There are also references to baptism by water and the spirit.

Most things in the Christian walk depend on trust. We ask, then even before we see evidence, we stand on the fact that God has promised it.

Don't worry if something dramatic doesn't happen. The wonderful thing is God dwelling in us, being so close that we can sense what He wants us to know. That is a miracle in itself.

Some people get that sense when they choose to follow Jesus, and I think that lines up with scriptures, even though that wasn't what I was taught back in the day.

God says He does not deny His children bread when we ask for it. How much more would He not deny His indwelling and baptism with His Spirit! Just trust that when you have asked, He has not denied your prayer.

Realize you already are. It is not the act, it is not the words of another, but the realization that you never have been seperated from God spirit

How do you reconcile that with the Biblical teaching that we're baptised with the Holy Spirit upon regeneration, and that we were not only seperated from God's Spirit, but were enemies of God?

just wondering how i get baptised in the holy spirit

I'm sorry if my answer before was a little curt. What I was trying to say is that if you're a Christian, then you're already baptised in the Holy Spirit, as baptism in the Holy Spirit is something that happens at regeneration.

Typically, the verse that we must begin with when discussing this is 1 Cor 12:12-13, which says, "For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (underline mine)"

Romans 6:1-4 also refers to this when it says, "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (underline mine)"

Notice that both of these verses state that we have already been baptised in the Spirit, by the Spirit, and not that this baptism is an additional experience that comes after salvation, as some teach.

Notice also that these verses state that this baptism is applied to all believers, not just those who have a subjective, esoteric experience after salvation.

When we receive this baptism upon regeneration, it has two effects on us. The first is that it joins us to the body of Christ, the second is that it makes us partakers in Christ's crucifixion and makes out being raised to newness of life in Him possible (Romans 6:4).

Being associated with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection through Spirit baptism establishes the basis for Christ's victory over our sin and our new nature that helps us to resist sin and compels us to serve God the way our old nature served sin.

I hope this is more helpful than the short answer I gave before and I apologize for helping the troll to derail your thread.

Well ChristSavedMe, there ya go.
Some people teach that there is no different event, some teach that there is a post-conversion event, and some even expect an evidence marker like tongues.

The point is, this is God you are dealing with. If God is the one you want to glorify, and God is the one that is offering the baptism, then you don't need to fret. He will make sure everything is okay.

Some people speak of wonderful experiences with emotional healing or insight, but as said above, God is already with you.

Make sure that friends don't intimidate you over the issue -- some circles will get spiritually competitive and deny that a person "has it." That sort of competitive approach is not in line with other things we're trying to live out in our Christian walk. Doing all out of love, we raise each other up in His ways.

If you would like to speak in tongues, work with God on this. Ask Him to pray through you, for things you can't express in words and for people who need prayer where you don't have the information. Keep your motives in sync with generosity and compassion.

Praying in tongues is different for each person; it can come suddenly or with a more gradual decision to do it. Either way does not make one wrong or right, because what does it matter? The goal is another angle of private prayer with God, and that is between Him and you.

If a person feels they are not baptised in the Spirit, and God is the one who does it, then there is nothing they can scrounge up to make it happen -- it comes from Him. It is Him.

Jesus promised that when he left earth, He would send the Holy Spirit. Our Comforter, our Guide, Empowerer, Wisdom, Insight, Inspiration, Indweller.

After Jesus' death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit moved through large groups of people with power.

God dwelling in His people, was like the power contained in the Holy of Holies and the Ark of the Covenant.

The disciples did not sit down and say, "Now I want the baptism of the Holy Spirit." The power of God just swept through the meeting and people started translating the gospel to international visitors in town.

You are probably asking because people have told you that you need to pray for a secondary infilling. Fine, no problem, it's never wrong to ask God for that. But Jesus taught a certain determination to believe that what God has promised to us is already granted.

We find ourselves needing to exercise faith, to see that God can do things through us that He has done through other people. There is no reason that any believer should not heal, deliver oppressed from harassing spirits, multiply loaves of bread... because these bring glory to God, relief for the needy, and build faith inside others.

Determination is a hard thing to get a handle on. But with this risk comes life and tangible improvements.

I disagree. By asking for this "second infilling", which is never taught in scripture, not only are you denying God's Word, but you're essentially telling God that the Holy Spirit and the Word of God isn't good enough for you.

We find ourselves needing to exercise faith, to see that God can do things through us that He has done through other people. There is no reason that any believer should not heal, deliver oppressed from harassing spirits, multiply loaves of bread... because these bring glory to God, relief for the needy, and build faith inside others.

And if "any believer" was an apostle, you might have a point. But these girfts ceased with the last of the apostles and with the completion of the canon.

What is the difference between being baptized by the Holy Spirit and having the holy spirit dwell in you? by prophecykid

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the original filling of the Holy Spirit. This is only the beginning and should be a recurring experience. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is what happens when you are filled with the Holy Spirit. God wants you to allow the Holy Spirit to grow within your fleshly body until the flesh is just a thin shell that contains God's Holy Spirit. When you get their you will be as close to perfect as we can get until we are finally with God in the New Resurrected Body.

I believe that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a totally different event than receiving the Holy Spirit at the time of conversion. Jesus had the Holy Spirit in Him from birth, yet when He was baptized in water the Holy Spirit came upon Him like a "dove."

Also, in the book of Acts, chapter 4, verse 4, the bible says that at that time the number of believers had grown to about 5,000. These people had heard the Gospel and believed it and were baptized in the name of Jesus, and had received the indwelling of the Holy Spirit according to the scriptures. However it wasn't until the Church prayed (Acts 4:24-30) that they were all filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:31).

Be Blessed,

Alan
