  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do I find moderate church?

My family and I are looking for a church. I'm interested in finding a moderate one. I live in Columbus, OH on the north side.
I'm not familiar with that area. :sorry:

I guess it depends to a large degree on what you mean by moderate. Tell us in a little more detail what you're looking for in a church, and maybe someone will have some ideas.

I want a place where it's OK to be me. Where politics and faith aren't going to get confused. Where if I need help I'll get it and if another needs help I can give it. I want a place that I can love God and make friends. I want a church that doesn't think that they're the only right church and where I don't fall "out of God's favor" for the slightest infraction.

Well, that sure sounds like you're looking for my church, which is in the Seattle area, not near Columbus at all. I can tell you there is at least one Assemblies of God church like that, but most of them probably aren't that way. In fact, since it's a denomination with a very loose national organization, there's even more variation than usual.

Well, if I didn't just buy a house and I didn't suffer from seasonal depression, I'd be on a plane :) I don't need to be in a place where it rains eleventy billion days a year with the dreary day mopies.

We really liked a Church of God but they didn't have child care. I'm almost wondering if we should go back and tell them that's what's missing for us (there were about 10 kids in the service we went to and maybe those other parents felt the same way?) and see what can be done.

There are 5 churches that we could walk to. One is a methodist church with only about 25 people and mostly well older than us. There's a lutheran church, a weslyan, an african church of christ and one that I'm not sure of the affiliation. These are all easy walks that I can expect my boys to do.

I guess unless you personally connect with someone from a church your best bet may be to just run a google search for local churches, read some of their statements of faith and then if any of them in particular intrigues you, go check out one of their services.

I'm a new Christian and I'm moderate, and the two churches I'm looking into are under the Baptist and United sects. Perhaps one of those kinds of churches would be right for you.

God bless you as you search for a church family. :)

It depends upon what you mean by moderate. What I mean is that it rejects inerrancy but still think Scripture contains basically an accurate account of God's dealing with us, and is authoritative. That's the position of the majority of the mainline churches. In Columbus there are plenty of mainline churches. In that area the United Methods are strong, but you'll find plenty of PCUSA, ELCA, Disciples, etc. Beyond that orientations depend upon the congregation. There are plenty of moderate non-denominational churches, etc.

The problem with terminology is that some people consider the churches I just described to be extremely liberal, and in Europe any Christian that takes the Trinity seriously is considered extremely conservative. So it's a matter of what you're looking for.

Because congregations tend to vary, I don't know of any practical alternative to checking out the nearby churches, unless there's somebody here with the same concept of moderate as you who happens to know your area. In a city like Columbus you shouldn't have to travel very far to find what you're looking for.

It seems that we're settling into a Presbyterian church. I don't know much about what it's affiliated with (there are different kinds of Presbyterian, I guess?) but the people are kind, they really love God, there's none of the "I'm more spiritual than you" bunk and they're concerned about loving God. They support their community. The past two weekends, I prayed (outloud) for a friend's nephew and this weekend someone came up to me and asked if I would pray for a baby who was also born prematurely.

I am concerned that there aren't many people our age but we'll see how that pans out. There are others who left our old church and basically all under the same circumstances (best described as fall in line or leave and falling in line meant changing politics among other things). The church is welcoming to all of us. Old church is well known for relationships. This is good and bad as some are used to support but some are used to abused. The new church thinks that what the "recovering" ones of us ahve to say is valuable. It's great to know that we can jump in with a role.
