Im having a tough time figuring out how christs death saved us from our sins.

I can see how his life would serve as a good example of how to lead a sin-free life. And "WWJD" works as a pretty good guide to trying to be more like him.

But I cant see how his -Death- actually saved us.

A friend of mine said that we had a debt to be repaid, and that christ paid it for us. But why would he need to? God has infinite forgiveness. You all probably know that story about the servent that owes an un-repayable ammount of money to his master, but the master erases the debt (thats an anology to god i believe) - So if god has infinite forgiveness why cant he just let it go, like the master did in that anology? What did christs death have to do with anything?

I started reading the bible a year ago, and have been praying and going to church since then, and really turning over some of these questions in my head. And this is one major one. If i can figure this one out, then I can accept christ as my saviour and Im golden. So any help on this one would be GREATLY appreciated

thanks

If The Wages Of Sin Is Death, Did Christ Really Die In Our Place On The Cross?
Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isa 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isa 53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Christ laid down His life for our sins. Death is the penalty for sin, and that is precisely the price Christ paid in our place.
1 Cor 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
2 Cor 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
2 Cor 5:15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him (Christ) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Rom 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Rom 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Th 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
1 Th 5:10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
1 Pet 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
1 Pet 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
1 Pet 2:23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
1 Pet 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
1 John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
The Good News!
Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins. Christ died for us, in our place. He paid the penalty of death that we should have paid, so that by faith in His atoning death and resurrection we might live forever with Him in victory over the law of sin and death. That is the good news, the Gospel message that the Bible teaches in verity.
Gal 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Gal 1:7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Christ's death was necessary so that He could be resurrected. The emphasis is on a risen Lord, rather than a crucified one. By one man, death and sin came into the world, and by one man, salvation. Jesus suffered all of the wrath of God for every single person in those hours on the cross.

You have to understand that the God of the OT and the Christ of the NT are one and the same. God is not JUST merciful and forgiving. He is also righteous and just. God's justice must be satisfied. Sin cannot go unpunished. God's love and mercy are satisfied by providing salvation that no mere man could ever do. So, God gave His only Son so that all could be saved and be reconciled to God.

The only way to be reconciled to God is to recognize that God is BOTH Just and Merciful, not one or the other.

Hey Dave!
How did christs death save us from our sins? Imho, the answer to that is the Gospel. For some 4000 years man lived in the nature of Adam and death was inevitable! Man lived “in Adam” and most still do! Death reined “in Adam” Our Father loved us but in Adam we could not abide with Him. Adam needed a new nature. Adam is carnal and God is Spiritual. Carnality has lusts and satan knows how to keep him from God our Father. So……………… Adam must die along with his carnal nature. Jesus died in place of Adam! So now we can die to carnality and live “in Jesus” the Christ! Die to carnality and live in the presents of God our Father!

It's what He was born for.
He was born in a barn, like
a lamb would be.
This might help.

Hebrews 9:11-26
11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come,
by a greater and more perfect tabernacle,
not made with hands,
that is to say, not of this building;
12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves,
but by his own blood he entered in once
into the holy place,
having obtained eternal redemption for us.
13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats,
and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean,
sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ,
who through the eternal Spirit
offered himself without spot to God,
purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament,
that by means of death,
for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament,
they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
17 For a testament is of force after men are dead:
otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people
according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats,
with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop,
and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood;
and without shedding of blood is no remission.
23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens
should be purified with these;
but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands,
which are the figures of the true;
but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often,
as the high priest entereth into the holy
place every year with blood of others;
26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world:
but now once in the end of the world
hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice
of himself.

The reason death was nessecary is simple really :)

1) Adam and Eve sinned (and every human after them inherited it)
2) God cannot be in the presence of sin
3) Sin is deadly... it requires death to clear it and if not cared for sin will kill the person it resides in
4) Throughout the Old Testement animals (only good, beautiful, strong) were sacraficed for that attonment for sins
5) Jesus came to die to be the ultimate sacrafice. He fulfilled the death for all sins ever because a) He was perfect and b) He was God. God was the most perfect sacrafice which covers all sins
6) The death was a payment for sins. Your sins and my sins have to be paid by death. Jesus took that death for us.
7) The payment was sealed when Jesus rose again!

In Christ

I'd recommend reading the 9th Chapter of Hebrews with some good commentary to wrap yourself around this issue.

But here's something else to consider. The "wages of sin are death", but the Bible very clearly says that Jesus is without sin. Death had no right to Jesus, yet, he was killed anyway just as Isaiah prophesied (chapter 53).

Just more meat to chew on.

Hope this helps Dave :)

When sin came into the world death came. God and sin cannot co-exist. Even if mankind lived perfectly there would still be a wall of separation between man and God. Because of the sin of Adam death reigned. While physical death came as a result of sin, spiritual death happened the moment Adam and Eve ate the fruit. This sinful nature passed on to all mankind. No amount of good works or sacrifices could change that sin nature.

Jesus came to this world and lived a perfect life. He did not have that sin nature passed on to the rest of mankind from Adam. He lived perfectly and perfectly satisfied all the demands of the law and all righteousness and the Father accepted that sacrifice. Jesus often referred to Himself as the Son of Man. He was God, but here on behalf of man. God the Father made a covenant with the Son of Man. The Son of Man made the covenant on behalf of mankind. It is only by faith in Jesus that we enter into the covenant and receive salvation. The Father accepted the perfect life and sacrifice of Jesus as payment for all sins.

When we accept Jesus we have His perfect life credited to us and our dead spirit is reborn. That dead spirit passed on from Adam stops the moment you are born again. The Bible says we become a new creation in Christ Jesus. Now we can boldly go before the throne of grace because when we stand before the Father we have Jesus' righteousness. We can stand before God because we have His perfection. There is no way we can stand before God any other way.

I like this text in Colossians 1 "19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— "

God's desire was to reconcile all back to Him. The only way for anyone to stand before the Father was for someone to live perfectly without sin and without a sin nature. Jesus was the only one who could do that. When He died He took all our sins (past, present, and future) upon Himself. 2 Corinthians 5 says "21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" All our sins were placed on the perfect sacrifice of Jesus so that we could have His righteousness. So when we accept Jesus as our Savior - as our Substitute - we can stand before the Father holy, blameless, and above reproach.

Redeemed

1 Corinthians 1:30
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

God has given us many things in Christ. He is made unto us wisdom. We have the righteousness of God in him. We are sanctified - set apart as holy by and for God. And in Christ Jesus we are redeemed.

The Greek word for redemption is apolutrosis. Apolutrosis means to pay the full price to release or loose that which is being held. It is to be bought with a price. It is atonement. Because of the sin of Adam, mankind was held captive to sin.

A price was required to redeem man from this captivity.

The word "atonement" means to be "at one with" God.

We were separated from God by the sin of Adam.

A price was required to atone for sin and redeem man so that he could once more be at one with God.

Leviticus 17:11
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

In God's Word, blood is used to represent life. The Word declares that the life or soul of the flesh is in the blood. Therefore, blood is involved in redemption to make an atonement for the soul. It is not the physical blood but the life that it represents that is the price required for atonement. However, from Adam to Jesus Christ no man or animal was born with life that had not been corrupted by sin of Adam. Therefore, the blood of goats and calves was used upon the altar to make atonement with a view toward the future payment of sinless blood which was the legal requirement to redeem man.

1 Peter 1:18-19
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

The price required to redeem us was not silver or gold. Jesus Christ was the only man since Adam's original creation that had blood free from the corruption that came as a result of Adam's sin. He had this perfect blood because God was his father. God created this uncorrupted life in Mary's womb. The word "precious" describes something that is both rare and valuable. Blood is not rare; but Christ's blood was rare. It was "one of a kind." It was valuable as it was life created by God Himself.

Galatians 3:13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

We are no longer held by the punishment due those who have broken the law. Sin and Sickness no longer have any hold on the believer because we have been redeemed.

Hebrews 9:11-12
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

The blood of goats and calves were given as sacrifices with a view toward the perfect sacrifice that was to come. Those sacrifices were not sufficient to pay the price for man's redemption. But Jesus Christ gave his precious perfect blood once for all time. Because of the price he paid for us we have obtained ETERNAL REDEMPTION. There is no more payment required. We have been redeemed!

Romans 3:24-25
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation
[payment] through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Colossians 1:14
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

Ephesians 1:7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Jesus Christ obtained eternal redemption for us.
We confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe that God raised him from the dead and we receive redemption. We receive by believing that he gave his life as a payment for ours. We accept his substitution for us and we are identified with him. Our sins are remitted. We are justified freely and made righteous before God. The price has been paid by Jesus Christ. We receive freely BY GOD'S GRACE. It costs us nothing because it cost God the life of His son.

Galatians 4:4-6
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

We have been redeemed and are at one with God. We have received God's gift of sonship. We have been given eternal life. We have been given holy spirit. We are God's sons and daughters because Christ paid the price to redeem us.

There is an beautiful oriental custom which is used in God's Word as a figure to illustrate what would be available when Christ accomplished our redemption:

Isaiah 55:1
Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

In the Bible lands market, the merchant who sells water, wine, and milk publicly announces the price in the market much like one who sell hot dogs, peanuts, and popcorn at a ball game.
When someone has a birthday he wants to make others happy. He buys the water, wine, and milk from the one selling. The seller then calls out in the market: "Come! Buy without price!" Those that have a need can then get the water, wine, or milk they need without money because it has already been paid for by the person having the birthday. Jesus Christ paid the price to redeem us. We can freely have all that God made available thanks to Jesus Christ who paid the price.

Ask for reasons not given in the Bible, because said lexicon relies upon circular justification. Make use of your common sense, as God would have you do.

May I extend my compliments to all the contributors above. Its very encouraging.

Sin is separation from God.

The wages of sin is death.

The only person who has ever had a right relationship with God is Jesus, because he was sinless.

He took our sins upon himself, so that we would be free to have a right relationship with God.

He took on our sins when he hung on the cross, and after his earthly death, he descended into hell. His resurrection on the third day showed that he had overcome death and the devil.

Why do we have to pay for our sins? Because there are consequences of sin that we cannot hide from. God is a merciful God, but also a just one.

They might carry little more weight in a discussion, so long as they weren't circular.

In all seriousness, take the following.

Q. Why do planets move?
A. Because planets move.

Would you be satisfied with that?

Here's the short version.

Sin produces death, it requires a life to pay for sin. That's one of the rules of the universe, somewhat like gravity, we don't really know why, only that God told us it is so.

Life is in the blood.

Jesus lived a perfect life, so when he died, he didn't pay for his sin, it's kind of like there is this extra payment floating around.

When we become believers we are baptised into Jesus. We die to the law, and are united with Jesus in both his death and his life.

At that point, Jesus' death pays for our sins and we are freed.

So a Christian dies twice, one is a death that produces the unity with Christ the second is his physical death.

Unbelievers also die twice, the first is their physical death, since they have not been united with Jesus in his death and life, there remains a penalty for their death, one which they pay for in their second death, being cast into the lake of fire.

Our death and life with Jesus is really a supernatural death and life and isn't that easy to understand as such. But when you meet a christian, he has already died once.

Often at this point people ask how Jesus' one death can be used for so many people. And I believe that comes down to Jesus being not only a man, who could pay for the sins of one man, but also God who could pay for the sins of the world.

The idea that God can just forgive us the penalty of our sins doesn't really stand up to the Bible. We don't see any references that show there are multiple ways to salvation. Instead we see Jesus as the only way. Remember Jesus himself prayed in the garden that if there was any other way to spare him what awaited. But there wasn't any other way. The one way is being united with Jesus through faith.

Hope that helps.

Here's the short version.

Sin produces death, it requires a life to pay for sin.

Could you justify this please?

That's one of the rules of the universe, somewhat like gravity, we don't really know why, only that God told us it is so.

Did not God create the rules of the universe? If not, then is sin something outside his control, rendering him not-omnipotent?

Life is in the blood.

Not necessarily. Jesus' corpse contained blood, but had no life in it.

Jesus lived a perfect life, so when he died, he didn't pay for his sin, it's kind of like there is this extra payment floating around.

With compound interest, it would seem.

Unbelievers also die twice, the first is their physical death, since they have not been united with Jesus in his death and life, there remains a penalty for their death, one which they pay for in their second death, being cast into the lake of fire.

By an omnibenevolent being?

Can people stop quoting the Bible and answer his question?

I can try even if that can be hard:)

Adam had something that was worth much = a perfect life.When he didn`t want to follow one of the laws that God said he lost his perfect life.
God wanted all human being get this perfect life so someone must pay "money = life" for what had been lost.These "money" must be same worth as what have been lost = perfect life.That means a perfect human being must lost his life to make up what Adam did.Then we other that was unperfect had a chance to get perfect

I hope you understand what I try to say even if I haven`t show you any scriptures

Can people stop quoting the Bible and answer his question?
What are you talking about? The best way to explain and help someone understand is to put the word together rightly divided for them quoting the word to answer the question, are you a unbeliever in the bible? Stop telling people to not quote the bible, unless you are working for the other side then I understand and you have no choice but to bash the spoken word.
