Sounds good! But are the gospels really ""the inspired, error free, truthful word of God.""???

Let me show you something.
Matthew 4:8
8 Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

This mountain doesn't exist. There is no mountain in the world from which one can see all the kingdoms of the world.

This little fable is not true.

Now how could the author of Matthew's gospel have known about this supposed event? Did Jesus tell him? Since the story is not true, did Jesus
lie?

In order to properly interpret scripture, one must use look at the context of the writer and the hearers and their culture. Matthew was a Jew and his audience was the early church which consisted of mostly Jews. There was no reason to include every kingdom on the earth for this temptation since there was a limited awareness of anything beyond the horizon and Matthew’s audience would not have understood. I believe the kingdoms that were visible from the mountain were the summation of what was considered the physical “world” at that time. The kingdoms were not the focus, the temptation to worship Satan was.

Yes I believe Jesus recounted these things to the apostles and also don’t forget the superintending Holy Spirit’s work.

Now I have something for you to look at:
1 Corinthians 2:11 (ASV)
11 For who among men knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of the man, which is in him? even so the things of God none knoweth, save the Spirit of God.

1 Corinthians 2:14 (ASV)
14 Now the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually judged.
Luke 24:44-45 (ASV)
44 And he said unto them, These are my words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures;
These verses address the work of the Holy Spirit called “illumination”: The ministry of the Holy Spirit whereby He enlightens those who are in a right relationship with Him to comprehend the written Word of God. You need to stop trying to find ways to destroy the character of the Bible and spend more time finding the way to God through Christ.

Would the authors of the Catholic Encyclopedia lie?
Your evidence is hundreds of years old.

I don't give apologetics for anything but the Bible, so the authors of the Catholic Encyclopedia will have to defend themselves with their own apologists. The evidence I gave you predates the Catholic Encyclopedia.

You are just rationalizing away a false statement in the gospel.

I am giving you examples of hermeneutics and exegesis as opposed to picking verses out of context and trying to interpret them with a myopic view. I suggest you pay more attention to the verses I gave you at the end of my last post concerning illumination.

Let me demonstrate some of the process that has corrupted the gospels.

Mark 1:2 NEW AMERICAN STANDARD

2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,
WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY;

Notice that I quoted this verse from the New American Standard Bible.
Can you see what's wrong?
It says Isaiah said....“BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,
WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY;

But actually this quotation is from Malachi 3:1
So whoever wrote the Gospel according to Mark made a mistake when he attributed this verse to Isaiah incorrectly rather than to Malachi who actually penned the verse. So much for Divine inspiration.

But ...not to worry. Look at this verse from the King James Version
Mark 1:2 KING JAMES VERSION
2As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

As you can plainly see, the King James Version has corrected the text to now read "in the prophets" rather than the error of attributing this quote to Isaiah.

How do we know what the original autographs actually said? There are errors and there are corrections in the gospels.

I think this link clears it up quite well.

Errors in attribution in the New Testament?

Do you know JP Holding, the writer of Teckton?

I heard he was the librarian at the prison library at Starky Florida.

Because JP Holding writes something doesn't make it true. It's just the opinion of a prison librarian.

If the only refutation you have to this explanation is to mention the job occupation of its author, things are much worse than I surmised.

In Matthew's Gospel, there is a passage, which contains several proofs that Matthew's Gospel is Fiction.
Matthew 28:11-15 (New American Standard Bible)

11Now while they were on their way, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened.

12And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers,

13and said, "You are to say, 'His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.'

14"And if this should come to the governor's ears, we will win him over and keep you out of trouble."

15And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely spread among the Jews, and is to this day.

List of Proofs.
Here is my list of proofs.
1) The Jewish Priests and Elders tell the guards to say "" 'His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep."" This is a ridiculous story to tell. Everyone knows that if the guards were asleep they would be unconscious and not know what happened. The ruling Jewish Sanhedrin was 71 members, seventy elders and the High Priest reputed to be amongst the wisest men. It is not believable that these very smart Jews would concoct such a dumb story.

2) In the Roman world, the penalty for sleeping while on guard duty was death. It is doubtful that even with a "good word" from the High Priest [Matthew 28:14] to the Roman Governor, he would have suspended the death sentence. It is not believable that the guards would have lied and said they were sleeping and subject themselves to the death penalty. Can't spend money if you're dead.

3) The Priests and Elders were very religious men. According to Jesus they were very careful about observing every point of the law, but were missing the spirit of the Law. Matthew 23:23-23-24 It is not believable that these religious men would suborn false witness and commit such a grave sin.

4)The Roman Governor would never believe such a dumb story ""'His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep." One did not get to rule an entire country by being an idiot.

5) This conspiracy to tell this lie, that the disciples stole the body, involves, the guards, the Jewish leadership, and even the office of the Roman Governor. It is not believable that a conspiracy based on such a poor lie would have held together. But that is what Matthew asks his readers to believe. "And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely spread among the Jews, and is to this day." Matthew 28:15 Matthew would have his readers believe the conspiracy lasted for years after the event. Not believable.

6) We have the witness of the four gospels. But only Matthew's gospel mentions a guard on the tomb. Not even a hint from the other gospels. The guard on the tomb is a vital element of the Jesus resurrection story. Had the guard existed the other gospel writers would have most assuredly mentioned it. To fail to mention such an important aspect of the story would be to miss the point of the story. Jesus was in the tomb, the guard was on duty, the tomb was now empty, so Jesus must have resurrected. The other gospel writers didn't mention the guard because this was Matthew's fiction.

These “proofs” are not proofs at all but merely doubts and conjecture. The guards had to give some excuse as to the disappearance of Jesus’ body, after all the body was gone and the explanation of being asleep is more plausible for the governor than what really happened which was Matthew 28:3-4 (KJV) 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. If the penalty for failure to secure the tomb was death, as you postulate, then no matter what story they give, the guards were in danger. The Sanhedrin then offered their help if the guards would share the lie. What choice did the guards have? They could tell the truth which would not have been accepted by the governor at all or at least employ the weight of the Sanhedrin and provide an excuse that was believable.
Your defense of the Sanhedrin for not telling this lie because they followed the law is misplaced. After all they had already lied when they went through the set up, false witnesses they enlisted, and encouragement of the crowd to execute and innocent man. They had already broken the 9th commandment: Exodus 20:16 (KJV) 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
