• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have given up smoking three times now. Once for 7 years, once for 2 years and this time for about 6 years. Each time I gave up I did it without the aid of patches etc and went cold turkey. What worked for me was to really get my head around it and really, really want to stop. I dropped down the nicotine levels in cigarettes till I was on the lowest of the low but no matter what I could not get below 20 a day (I had been up to as much as 40/50) so I eventually took the plunge and stopped. I used to reward myself with something nice when I had reached certain goals, not always big things but a little gift to myself. I have accepted that I am a nicotine addict and if I slip that will be it, I will be back on the road to smoking so for me I do not think there will ever be a time when I can smoke a little bit, for me it is all or nothing and I choose nothing. When the temptations became very strong to smoke I used to give myself permission to smoke if I wanted to and even had conversations with myself - 'well if you want a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] have one' "well I don't really want one" 'well don't have it then but if you want one have one'. Sounds daft I know but it worked for me. The answer is to find out what works for you and don't give up giving up. If you make a slip start again, and again and again and again - eventually you will get there.

Believe in yourself. Believe you have the power to do it. Then, just stop putting your hand on cigarettes and cigarette packs. Don't hang around people that smoke in the beginning. Don't drink because if you smoked when you drank, you might get strong urges to smoke.
