  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How are you obeying this command?

Notice that James (the brother of Jesus) tells us to "visit" those in need. In my town the poor can get a meal every day in the month at different churches. And there are many welfare programs -- no one need go hungry, but there are further compelling spiritual needs that requires personal contact. We throw food, money and things at the poor and think that's the end all. But not so as James plainly tells us ...

"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction ..." -- James 1.

how about adopt a child?

although we adopted a child from another country, we did not do it because of the above Scripture

we prayed for a child & God led us to adopt
1 Samuel 1:27

Hi, I know your response wasn't to my post but I want to say sometimes people pray for children and still don't get led to adopt or give birth to one, in such a case then just visiting orphans seems like a good idea, God bless

"Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality" (Romans 12:13)

It's tough to do in Covid lockdown. There are fines levied upon those who visit others unnecessarily, in the city where I live. These restrictions are ridiculous, largely arbitrary, and bordering on totalitarian. The effect upon the Christian community has been very damaging. There can be no proper, biblical community of believers through Zoom. I wonder how degenerated the Church will have to become under the egregious over-reach of government in their "health protocols" before Christians will realize they can't obey Man and honor God after the manner of Romans 12:13.

Prior to the Co-vid hysteria, I was much involved in discipleship which always entails folding the one being discipled into my life to a significant degree. The last fellow I discipled was near-homeless so I took him to work with me (I'm self-employed), paying him for what little help he could supply to me, brought him along to family barbecues and visits to my siblings's homes, and sat for many hours over coffee discussing the intersection of life with his new-found faith.

My wife and I have also created, and participated in, many outreach events through our church. I won't go into detail lest I become guilty of tooting my own horn.

Why do you ask your question?

it's also not as easy as one might think to "visit" orphans

we requested to visit the orphanage when we adopted our child but were not allowed
instead the adoption took place at a gov't bldg

it's different if one is in a program to volunteer for a certain length of time but to just stop in to visit, not something that is encouraged as it disrupts children's routines

I sit near the front of a restaurant and if someone can't pay for their food (usually don't have enough money), I finish paying for it. I also wear shirts with Christian themes on them and I talk about my church if I'm asked about it.

Well, I asked because I want to know how other Christians are practicing hospitality and other good deeds despite the covid 19 restrictions, my friends and family are against being hospitable to others for now so I wondered if Christians are still open to obeying this command regardless of the pandemic. It would help some of us figure how we can still do good deeds if we know how others are doing them successfully

Orphanage here, have list what they need to procure for their needs. So we get the list of things that they need and have it sent to them.
