How about a 22 for home defense?

I've been thinking about getting a semiautomatic 22LR handgun as my sole weapon for home defense. Part of my reason is that I tend to be depressed, and a 22LR is not as tempting for use on myself due to its small caliber. I was reading an article that referenced a study claiming that the 22LR is adequate for home defense, because it can be fired several times rapidly to accomplish the same thing as a larger caliber. Also, I prefer a gun that is quieter and has less recoil for practice.

Any thoughts?

Not strong enough IMO. Even the most minimal shielding will block a .22 bullet.

imho, if you suffer from depression and are specifically picking the caliber of gun because you think you would be less likely to use it on yourself, you shouldn't own a gun period. There are other methods of self defense that would be better suited to you.

To bad we can't buy automatic assault rifles anymore, I really wanted one. I wonder if that includes the P90. I also wonder if I can legally but the AA-12. I mean I know its firepower is ridiculously crazy but first shot and the robber would be running. Heres a clip of it, yes each shot is a shotgun blast.

As others have said, get treatment for your depression. Effective treatments are out there!
Until then, have pepper spray and/or a baseball bat.

Shooting many small rapid-fire bullets at an invader is NOT effective home defense. 22s are effective with correct bullet placement, but that's not going to happen in a home invasion with a novice shooter. You need fast, effective stopping power like 38 special or 45 automatic (both are pretty low recoil with a heavy gun).

I agree that you should not have a gun in your house based on your mental state of depression. However, your current spiritual state makes you utterly defenseless. The best form of protection for anyone is , Almighty YHWH, the Creator of heaven and earth.

If you have any temptation toward suicide then I think owning a gun would be a bad idea.
