I think there may be a deeper meaning to it than that. He didn't want to tell her. She kind of made him. And with him being so sarcastic, he may not have meant it at all.
But, did you see the episode where he and Stacy got stranded at the airport? It looks pretty far from being over to me. I think they're going to focus on that, next episode, from what the previews suggested. He tells her she has to choose.
