  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My parents especially my father was hyper religious. So many sorts of media were banned in my household. Witchcraft and violent media were discouraged. Although strangely there was never a very anti-sex sentiment in the home. My father made a point that a Christian shouldn't in any way manner enjoy the idea of another human being in pain, even in fiction. I'd probably get in trouble if I had naked pictures of women laying around my room, but having pictures of women in bikinis and whatnot wasn't a big deal. I do remember he discovered my search history and I confessed it was me and he just laughed and walked away. A big difference between my other religious friends where it was almost the opposite. Violence and witchcraft was fine in their households, but admiring a woman's body in any small manner was strongly forbidden, lol.

My mother was more of a clean freak. Sadly she grew up in a trailer trash environment and had a mother who didn't care if the house looked like a mess. So she developed a complex for being hyper clean. My sisters and I were discouraged from walking certain parts of the carpet in order to avoid foot prints. She'd at least vacuum twice a day. Although she wasn't as crazy to put plastic on the furniture or anything.

As far as table manners, I guess my father would always get mad when I burped and didn't say "excuse me". I never really did, and usually it would end with us arguing about it. With me taking the position that burping is a natural human bodily function and there is no reason to make any apologies for it. Still have that viewpoint.

Violence and witchcraft should be discouraged unless it's fake then it makes somewhat of a difference. Examples Harry Potter, Tomb Raider etc.

I guess. Didn't matter in my home. Maybe only rare exception is he was a fan of the Simpsons and I remember watching Tree House Of Horror as a kid.. honestly had some nightmares thanks to those episodes. Clearly violated his policy, but he had somewhat a soft spot for humor.

Although to give my father credit.. while that stuff was banned from being played in my house, he did allow me to have my own tv and computer in my room. Something many other religious parents wouldn't allow. He also wanted me to mingle with non-Christians and never wanted me to attend any type of Christian only school. He viewed it as unbiblical. Christians in the Bible were obviously part of the world, and in his mind that was natural instead of trying to create an artificial sheltered environment. Sadly something I saw with my church friends especially the home schooled ones.

I do remember as a teenager some people remarked that I had a weird "sheltered" yet also very "worldly aspect" about me, lol.
