Hoover High School teacher placed on leave for using racial slur in classroom
A Hoover High school teacher was placed on administrative leave with pay on Monday for using a racial slur when asking students to turn down music they were playing in class last Friday, school system officials today confirmed.

The teacher admitted to using the slur, Hoover school superintendent Dr. Kathy Murphy confirmed.
I think the funny part about this story is the dispute over whether there was profanity in the song, as if it would suddenly make it okay to shout racial slurs at the students.

I'm surprised. Hoover is somewhat of a posh area. Probably a real stronghold for Democrats.
Political party is irrelevant to this story. However, even if this were true, teaching in a particular town does not mean one lives in that town, but again, an irrelevant point.

But surely enlightened Democrats would never be guilty of racism.

Whoever suggested that Democrats cannot be racist? Racism throughout American history is not owned by any particular party... probably because racism isn't about affiliation. Nonetheless, racists tend to gravitate toward particular political affiliations at different points in history. For much of the 20th century until the passage of the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s, racists aligned with the Democratic Party (more specifically the Dixiecrats), but that group has migrated toward the Republican Party, with a strong presence in the white supremacist movement (marketing themselves as the alt-right). If the Democratic Party adopts a white nativist/nationalist agenda in the future, perhaps they'll migrate back.

Very true. Also, who says this teacher was a member of any specific political party in the first place?

No one. The earlier reply it was a transparent attempt to call Democrats racist by suggesting that the voting tendency of the town means that everyone is liberal and Democrat, including the people who work there, thus the racism displayed by the teacher is racism displayed by Democrats and/or liberals.

I know, I  when I saw the post too as such posts often come from the same people that defend racist language directed at non-white immigrants when said by leaders of the political party they support (a discussion where political affiliation would actually relate to the discussion).

I've got a suspicion that if it was demonstrated that the teacher in question was a life-long GOP voter, there would be all sorts of reasons why you shouldn't assume they are representative of the GOP as a whole.

However, if it was demonstrated that they were a Democratic voter, it would be proof that all democrats are the REAL racists.

It's just kind of a hunch I have.

Based on your signature and OP, do you think whites in the South are generally racist?

I think there's racism every where. I'm sure some racist people changed to the republican side.

Here's the song in question which describes what is not an uncommon lifestyle within the black community. Perhaps this teacher was tired of it being made into an art form. Jes' sayin'.

Then she could have expressed that in, oh, maybe any other way than dropping a racial slur.

Avoiding using obvious racial slurs isn't exactly difficult, and shouldn't be too much to ask.

Whoever complained is a race baiter, clearly. The real racists are the ones who always bring awareness to how people deride and subjugate them overtly and covertly. Why can't we move past race?!

The argument was made that profanity in the song prompted the teacher using a racial slur, why are we attempting to change the reason for the use of the racial slur? And as you see, in your posting this video, there is no profanity in the song. But regardless, whether there was profanity or some fake argument about the song's content (because and making a song about realities he has seen should be shunned), how does that justify using a racial slur toward children?

What was the reason again?

However, arguing that rarity should govern response is ridiculous. Actions taken to address preventable deaths are not often based on rarity. A child drowning in a pool is not common, but there are still laws in place to mitigate the common causes of children drowning (like requiring fences at a certain height). Will this stop all drownings? No. But it lessens drownings. Just like texting laws will not stop all distracted drivers, but it does lessen the number of accident. I often wonder what it's like to live in a world where you see something wrong, but don't wish to take any steps to improve it, I guess that's why I science research.

I guess I'll never understand why color is important. These threads get hits like crazy and never seem to grow old, while threads that are more educational or involve non-feeling type issues get passed by over and over.

Oh well. Carry on. Who am I to say what's important to anyone but myself.
