I went over to my mom's house today to help her hook up a new DVD/VCR to one of her TV's. The VCR had stopped working on her old player (which was only a few years old). Anyways, while I was trying to hook it up, I noticed that it had no placed to plug the outside cable line into. It also had no place to connect the player to the old line that had gone from the old player into the TV. So, we took it back to exchange, but the store didn't have any of the "old" style players that accepted those hookups. They said the the cable television industry will be changing to all digital by 2009. She will need a digital box from the cable company to make it all work. I'm sure that some places still sell the ones with the old style plugs (like my own player I bought 2 years ago).
My question is, could she have used the new one that she returned anyways? I mean, she could have just plugged the cable line into the back of the TV so that she could watch TV (at least until 2009). And perhaps she could have plugged the DVD player straight into the TV. (She obviously wouldn't be able to record programs that way). She doesn't record programs anyways.
Her TV is probably 3 or 4 years old, a semi-large screen. The only thing I don't know is if the TV has that same kind of line in that would accept the cords that came with the player. (I didn't even think about this until later because I was still thinking of the "old" hookup while I was there).
