Hi.

I've got a bit of a personal problem and I was wondering if anyone could please help...

I'm a Catholic teenager, and I've known for years that I'm gay. I want to be chaste as the Church commands (though, of course, I'm not perfect and part of me does not want this at all). Many of my friends know about this because I have told them.

Is it wrong if I want to be chaste that people know that I'm gay? Usually they'll know that I'm Catholic and don't want to be in that sort of relationship, but is it wrong that many people (even not all my good friends;some friends of friends) know about this?

probably too late to do anything about it if it weren't ok but i would think that its ok. It will be super OK that people know if you, with GOD's help, can be chaste. GOD can and will help you in many ways. One will be through the Sacraments. especially confession and Eucharist. Another thing i tell everyone: JESUS loves you. HE is always with you!! You can talk with HIM anytime you want. If you know how much HE loves you (look at a crucifix) and if you know HE is always with you you may find avoiding sin easier. I wrote a short thing about avoiding sin in my journal yesterday. If you want to read it click on the J in the box on this post and go look for it. It maybe 4 posts from the top.

Dearie, I share this exact problem, and My advice as someone going through the same thing is to practice self mastery, when urges or lust arise, pray the rosary, meditate on the cross, whatever it takes, the best cure is to immerse oneself in Christ, because with the full armour of God the powers at be will fail...remember in John that the "light shines within the darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not" Clothe yourself in light, let the rest burn away, and it does not matter if people know or if your "out" we know Paul was a murderer and Mary of Magdala was a prostitute but they are still saints.

Whether homosexual or heterosexual, the choice of being chaste is a big one. Years ago, I made the choice to remain chaste until marriage. That was about I'd say 20 years ago. And as you can see, from my age under my username, I've been chaste for 24 years. Do my friends know? Yes. I've never made it a secret to anyone who asks, and when the teens of my Parish find out, I get asked the usual questions of sexual desires and you know the blah-blah-blah.

In any case, you are not obligated to volunteer the information about your own sexuality and choices. That is really between you and God. If your friends know already, there's nothing really you can do about it now. However, those friends who are supportive of your choices, they will stand by you through whatever happens.

In our society where being chaste is not "PC"ish, it takes a brave and strong person of character to make such a decision. May God's strength be with you. And if you need to PM me for anything, please do so. I'm available.

It is not a sin for others to know your struggles. The Catholic church is a family, and we need to support eachother. I commend you on your choice to remain chaste, and do not look down on you in anyway for any reason.

Thank you all for your great advice and help.

I'm afraid that pretty much all of the people who know about my sexuality are non-Catholics. Very few actually consider that it would be wrong for me not to remain celibate and I must admit that I sometimes fall into talking of my sexual desires as though it were perfectly acceptable to indulge them. :o

I dont think you should be telling people you're gay because they have a preconceived, and justifyably, negative ideas about the condition of people who call themselves gay.

Philipians 4:7

You cross is great. So will be you pay in heaven. It is not sexuality and tamptation that is sin. It is giving in to it. God help you and give you strength.

Being gay or heterosexual is not what is sin, but falling and giving into the desires of the flesh. Be brave, and have faith. Saying no is a great thing.

This is hard. I think it is healthy to share things with your family of faith, but...I can't promise you that telling them is a good thing. I would maybe start witha good friend you beleive you can trust with this information.
Hopefully there is someone here who has been through this and can help you better than I can.

i think it is alright that they know.

However, i would not "define" yourself using one word alone. You are not "gay". More accurately you are a child of God with homosexual tendencies. Even gay people who are very sexually active should still call themselves people before anything else.

It is great that you are trying to be chaste. Stay strong, for many it is the fight of a lifetime.
